Outlands cancelled
Outlands was a mini music festival which was due to take place at and in the enviorns of a fully licenced premises in Gathabawn, Co Kilkenny on the 22nd of August.
The purpose of the festival was to
1. Unite the several groups of local promoters, performers and traders into one ‘catch all’ event, thus allowing each to showcase their wares to people who may otherwise not receive such exposure.
2. Provide an extremely low-cost forum for interaction and meeting like-minded individuals and hearing great music for the many young people in Kilkenny who cannot afford to go to the big name festivals.
3. Encourage the local tourism upon which so many local jobs depend. This has been crippled as a result of the economic downturn and the early closing rule for licenced premises in the city.
The organisers elected to have DJ’s only, and not bands. This has numerous advantages, but mainly cost – and it was imperative to keep costs down in order to be able to sell tickets for only ten euro.
DJs were chosen from a vast range of musical backgrounds, to give the mini-festival an eclectic a feel as possible, as well as to cater for all musical tastes. Rock, soul, funk, indie, old skool and dance fans were all catered for.
Face painting, a barbeque, T shirt stalls, video games and caricatures were the non-musical attractions.
Busses were organised to bring fans to and from the venue. A full team of security and medical personnel was established.
On Friday afternoon, less than 24 hours before the event was due to commence (and with a lot of the provisions already paid for and in place) the organisers were informed that a fire inspector had inspected the premises that afternoon and had concerns about its capacity to accommodate a large number of people.
This issue had never proven to be a problem with this venue in the past and was therefore totally unforeseen by the organisers. It was not their intention to cancel at the last minute, and the decision was not theirs to make.
Nevertheless, the event had to be cancelled. Refunds are available at point of purchase.
The response to Outlands was phenomenal. There is a clear demand for a low cost meeting of musical minds in Kilkenny. Judging by ticket sales, it would have been possible to sell out the event more than twice over. People really warmed to the idea.
The organisers have therefore not ruled out the possibility of seeking alternative accommodation and running the event elsewhere in the coming weeks or months.
The Outlands Crew would like to extend their sincerest thanks to everyone who has helped and supported them in this endeavour, as well as their sincere apologies to the many dissapointed festival fans that were let down at the last minute.

All About Outlands
First up check out our web site www.outlandsmusic.net
Outlands will take place on Saturday 22nd August 2009 in Gathabawn, North County Kilkenny. Entertainment kicks off at 3PM. Busses to the venue leave hourly from The Scouts Den on the Bennetsbridge Road from 1PM, and will be running to and from Kilkenny all night. Tickets are €10 (plus €1 booking fee if bought from an agent) and can be bought from Rollercoaster on Kierans Street, Kilkenny or www.tickets.ie There will also be tickets available on the door, but our venue capacity is limited and we cannot guarantee availability of these so you’re better off just buying in advance
How it all came about:
Why did certain, well known festivals not sell out this year, despite having fantastic line-ups? Why are more and more people having parties at home, watching DVD’s and heading to the cinema instead of supporting their local band, DJ, Pub or Club?
The reality of it is money, or rather lack thereof. Many people simply want the craic and togetherness of a festival, with the music as an added bonus. Before, they were prepared to spend two hundred quid or more to do this. Now half the country is on the dole and everyone is skint.
Enter Outlands: A combined twenty hours of music for a recession shafting tenner. Great value pints and sound people. No frills. No organic tofu knobs and no hour long queues for a €7 plastic half litre (which is less than a pint by the way) of warm fetid beer. Just a laid back atmosphere, and good times that cost f**k all.
It makes so much sense it’s amazing it took until now.
The original idea was to assimilate everything going on locally into one catch-all two day event, with full catering and camping, that all the Kilkennians could pop out to. To be called Outlands. Why? Because it was to be held out in The Sticks. Or something.
As plans progressed however, the two day festival proved to be a logistical (and indeed financial) quagmire, so it was decided to scale operations right back to a single afternoon, evening and night. A mini-festival.
Again, to keep costs down (noticing a pattern emerging here people?), we leaned towards DJ’s rather than bands. We figure that people will have almost as much fun dancing to a rock DJ as they will to a rock band, and it costs a hell of a lot less.
But ten hours of entertainment on two stages by selling tickets for just ten euro though? It wasn’t going to be easy.
The Outlands crew set about getting the best and brightest entertainment locally for the event. Some were unavailable. A few were outlandish (no pun intended) in price – not in keeping with the spirit of the thing at all at all. Boo hiss, etc.
We wanted to keep it low-cost but we also wanted decent acts. A hard trade-off to make. Luckily we got some voluntary help and input in the form of the Laughing Buddha Crew (They run regular quirky themed nights in Billy Byrne’s beer garden on John Street that are WELL worth a look) and the Suburban Sounds Crew, fresh from Planetlove, plus local hero Cleveland Mike and a couple of other heads from the town.
Once we started promoting Outlands, the whole thing snowballed, people really warmed to the idea and it wasn’t long beofre the offers were rolling in. We were inundated with emails from DJ’s and promoters offering to get involved, mostly for free and for the love of the music.
Cheap music? Loads of people pitching in for a unified goal? Almost hippyish in its idealism isn’t it?! But don’t be put off by that…..please!
So anyway, we knocked heads together for a month or so and made a few (a LOT) of phone calls, and threw around some ideas (and I almost lost the will to live staring into this bloody computer 8 hours a day). Eventually we drew up a list of the finest acts we could muster, just for you.
We have everything from Funk, Soul and Disco (Cleveland Mike), to Old Skool and Party Tunes (Suburban Sounds), Deep house and Minimal, (La0 commenti 132 giorni
