About Me

Me, Myself, and I
My life is spent explaining to my wife why I am wearing a feather bonnet, a woollen skirt, a furry belt thing with a knife in my sock.
Music
anything with a bass drum in it
Films
dvds of bass drumming
Sports
extreme parade racing - increasing the bass drum tempo during a march until the whole band is sprinting past the other bands in the parade
Scared Of
bagpipes, Tyler Fry, most Pipe Majors, strong winds when wearing kilts
Happiest When
playing the bass drum AND the Drum Sergeant is smiling (not mutually exclusive!)

  • Basel Tattoo

Managed to upload some pics, but still ravaged by the post-Tattoo lurgy (not swine flu, thankfully). More eventually when the brain is engaged - but do check the pics out

  • Tattooed in Basel

Back home after the Tattoo in Basel. Wearing the "I survived the Basel Tattoo" t-shirt. So much to say and so little energy. I'll blog soon once I have recovered fully from both the Tattoo and the 30+ hour flight home!

Why do pipers march so quickly when they play? To get away from the noise of the bagpipes!

  • The Great Feather Bonnet Adventure

OK... the PM said we were getting appearance money for the Basel Tattoo so I decided I would spend the money wisely by flying overseas early and - apart from buying an Audi to import as well - try and get a really swish feather bonnet for me to wear during the Tattoo.

So far I have tried Sweden and Denmark but nothing all that fancy really. I mean the SAPD one is OK (bit Scottish looking tho') but if we are going to make a real show of it in Basel then we really need something a little more glitzy!

Besides... I need something to distract the audience and get their eyes up at my feather bonnet rather than at my feet doing the (previously unattempted) slow march.

Nothing doing in Scandinavia so I'm heading to Hamburg and Bonn because I know a few high-tech guys there and I'm thinking - stuff the natural materials - what about a kevlar bonnet (light but strong and bullet proof) with LED lights all over that flash in time to the music? Better still, what about random patterns of the lights until I hit the bass drum and then they all flash on together? Sounding goooooood!

I know the PM has left early to chase after me to stop me doing this (or maybe to teach me to slow march?) but he's not going to stop me getting my own bonnet! I know when I light it up at Basel all the rest of the pipers and drum corp will want one, so they will out-vote him.

Just think how useful they'll come at Xmas time! Great for the Pageant and then you can stick 'em on your Xmas tree. I'll send a foto when I get the prototype finished in Germany.

    Wiedersehen!
