- Hey, just currently in Australia having the time of my life. Finished university in June after a slog of a year doing dissertation and final exams and fancy doing something crazy. Never been on a plane before so jumped on a flight to Australia the end of July and not looked back since.
Spent two weeks in Sydney making some great friends and then got a plane to Cairns. From there, I did mental things such as bunjee jumping, skydiving, great water rafting. After Cairns, I spent two months in a camper van travelling down the East Coast of Australia. It was an amazing experience. So much to see off the beaten track in Oz. Since then, I have settled down and worked in the big cities - 2 and a half months in Brisbane, 2 months in Sydney and now I am in Melbourne.
Miss everyone from home though and shall see you some point in 2010. Wooo

So now at the 10 month point in the land of Oz and its been an interesting few months. Still loving Australia though. Its just a completely different world over here. Missed home a bit but been having a great time here
I got extended in my temp job til mid June so been working away saving the pennies for a final adeventure in New Zealand. My job mostly consists of going on Facebook and sitting around doing nothing. It also involves confusing the hell out of Australians with my accent. Believe it or not, the Ozzies believe my accent to be Irish/Scottish/another language and my name to be Mark/Markson/Marcus/Morton... Its a cushy little job though. Got very very lucky. However, almost had all that derailed by good old Etihad Airways.
First of all, I almost ended up on a flight home at the end of May. When I first got my flight to Australia, I was sold a 12 month open ended return ticket with the dummy date being put at 30th May. I was led to believe I would always be able to change the date to June or July, if I wanted to extend my time in good old Oz. However, I called up a few weeks before and got told my ticket was a special 'promotional economy class' and there were none of these in June or July. I would have to 'upgrade' my ticket to a 'normal economy class'. After three phones call and a total of two hours on hold, I was told I was going to get charged 650 pounds to change my flight to June/July or I was going home 30th May. It would have been great to be home but it felt so rushed and I still wanted to do loads more before going home. By some lucky stroke, I decided to go bitch and moan in person to the local office and they suddenly managed to offer me the 21st July. So I am now coming home on the 22nd July... A-woo!
In two weeks, I will be going to New Zealand! Start off in Auckland and then its travelling a month down to Christchurch. Have a final five days in Sydney then I am home! Scary! Just booked a travel pass around the whole of New Zealand on a tour bus. Things to do there include zorbing, horse trekking, glacier walks, swimming with dolphins, black water rafting. Gonna be amazing and a great end to the last year. Thankfully there will be no more bunjee jumps cos I could never do THAT again.
My sharehouse in Melbourne has worked out fantastic. Its cheap, the people are lovely and its a good location. Hostels are good short term but nothing like a bit of familiarity (even if sharing a kitchen with 20+ people is slightly stressful). Had some mental nights like a kids party night with Drunken Pass the Parcel/Dares and many drinking games involving a pack of cards. Wooo! (Goon dont taste any nicer!). Cannot wait to be back home for lots of vodka and cocktails (serious lack in last year).
Weather is pretty terrible but its like being at home - cold, rainy and foggy (while you get nice weather. Not fair! :p). Joined the local gym and been working hard at Spin and Body Pump (but still eating like a pig hence why I'm not quite at six pack level...).
Out of the things to do in Melbourne, the biggest ambition was Neighbours (how sad!). Neighbours night was INCREDIBLE. Every Monday night, a number of people from Neighbours are on rotation to go to this event, get pictures taken and answer questions. For the week I went, there was DOCTOR KARL KENNEDY, Donna and Steve Parker. Got some great pictures and listening to Karl Kennedy's band was hilarious. Ended up dancing like a loon after, going to a random gay club drinking til 4am then getting up three hours later for work. A-wooooo!!
Also went to the Neighbours tour a few days ago. That was a real blast from the past. Had my pic with the good doctor again and went on the external set which is TINY. Just six little houses in a small little street. They make it look so big on tv. Totally bizarre but totally worth it!

So its been a fair old amount of time since I last updated this...
Since the last blog, I've been having a great time living and working in Sydney and Melbourne. From Christmas Eve, I spent nearly three months living in Sydney. I spent the whole time living in a hostel next to Coogee beach. It was a little cramped but met loads of cool people. The weather was incredible and it was just great living in a little beach town with loads of great pubs nearby. In addition, there was a great little walk along the coast to Bondi Beach with loads of beaches and great lookouts along the way. Unfortunately, I havent tanned at all and still look very pale. Looks inevitable that I am coming home white... :lol:
While in Sydney, I lucked out in getting a temp job working for a stationary company doing inbound customer support in their call centre. It was a strange little job seeing just how particular people can get about their pens and post-it notes. The receptionists of the world really are a bitchy lot. However, it was great money and met some amazing people so it was sad to leave that mid March.
While I was in Sydney, I managed to be there at the same time as MARDI GRAS! My god, being at the parade was incredible. It was an amazing atmosphere and I got very very drunk. There was loads and loads of people standing at the front, so there were some idiots going around selling kids stools for $10. It was hard to see so me and my friends got one each, cos we are idiots also. These proceeded to break or fall over constantly, so we spent a part of the night falling over and dragging each other down with wine flying everywhere. Good times!
Other random activities from Sydney:
- Went to Laser Quest and came last. Out of 38 people. Including kids. I had fun though. Obviously not cut out for the warrior life.
- Went to Speed Dating on Valentines Day. Straight speed dating. I was wrecked and thought it would be a laugh. Unfortunately, I didnt realise quite how many people took this stuff seriously... It was 2 minutes at each table and it was horrifically hilarious. Had some woman trying to chat me up after so score...I think :lol:
- Got so drunk that I've been sick in at least two different modes of public transport
- Became addicted to Nandos goodness. I love that place. My wedding and funeral will be catered by Nandos.
- Joined a gym and got really into that. Continued this in Melbourne. Still love junk food though so its about balancing out.
- Australia Day! Spent the whole day on the streets of Sydney drinking cans of beer. Good times. Ended up at some concert where we just sat drinking the whole time. Yay
- Found Irn Bru cans for $2.50 a can. Yes I had to buy them. It tastes so much better when its so warm and you've not had it for AGES.
From mid March, I once again got on a plane and went to Melbourne. Wow, the weather really is like being at home. You get four seasons in the one day. Weird to be back in the cold and rain. Melbourne is a great place to be in though. Theres always something happening somewhere. Comedy festivals, art festivals, festivals for festivals, etc.
Once again, I lucked out with a temping job for an information line on national parks in the state of Victoria. The money is just so much more than I was earning at home. In addition, I pretty much spend the whole day on the internet. Wooo. Paid for Facebook usage.
The road to getting a job was extremely random. I had one interview where there were four people applying and we were told only two people would get the job. We were then told that we had 30 seconds against a stopwatch to introduce ourselves. After that, we were then told to get into two groups, invent a product within three minutes and then present this product within 30 seconds. I messed it up badly so didnt get the job. Got offered this temping job above though instead, which was strangely more money and better location. Go figure...

So I am now heading for 5 and a half months away from home. Feels like I have been away a lifetime (in a good way). A lot has changed since last time I did this.
Stayed in Brisbane til 18th December, had a road trip for a few days then travelled down by car to Sydney on 23rd for Crimbo and New Year. I am now staying in Sydney for the forseeable getting a job and the like.
So I managed another few weeks of doing those two telemarketing jobs til it snapped finally. Got to the last Monday before Christmas and I quit the morning job. Of course, when you grind to a halt in one job, the other just follows... so I phoned in sick the rest of the week for the other. Never been seen again there...God bless temp work in Australia!
Really started to settle into the flat I was staying at. Inflatable beds arent that bad once you get used to it. All your shit lying across the floor becomes normal. Who needs fucking furniture?
Managed to get a free boat trip out of the evening job before I left. For their Crimbo night out, there was a boat going around Brisbane with free alcohol all night. I drained the bar and ended up last bus home falling asleep and just about managing to get off at my stop. Good night had by all. Must drink responsibly...
Also, should mention another drunken jaunt to a karaoke bar. Got so blindingly drunk this time that I did Meat Loaf - I'd Do Anything For Love... Yeah, not happening again! Stayed out til early hours and got first bus home at 6 in morning. Had some Irish couple obsessed with me getting my hair cut, bless them.
Road trip was great fun. Went to some of the most random places you can find. Managed to go see Nimbin which is just full of drugs everywhere. The 'museum' is just some little bedsit with pro-drugs propoganda everywhere. Bucked the trend and didnt take any drugs while there. Definitely a different side of Australia. Thoroughly recommended.
Stayed in abandoned racegrounds and random caravan places along the way in the camper. Woke up one morning bit to fuck by sandflies. Huge lumps everywhere. Damn those bastards. I shall kill every last one of you now!!!!
Went to the legendary Byron Bay and really enjoyed that. Would definitely like to go live there in the future. Such a cool, relaxed wee town.
On 23rd, went back to Brisbane and collected some people then headed down to Sydney for the 12 hour drive. Slept most of it but I'm told we nearly drove off the road about 5 times. Yay that I am still alive. Got to city centre and got lost. Took forever to get to the hostel we were staying at.
So begins the binge drinking:
24th - Went some random pub crawl. Plenty of santa hats and free drinks.
25th - No beach and Bondi. Fucking pissing it down. Hostel provided free wine all day so got wrecked off that and just partied at hostel all day and night. Best Crimbo never and no joke
26th - Went to races and managed to win 2/4 races and get placed in other. God I'm good. Ended up wrecked in a nightclub insulting random knuckleheads then helping myself to self-service Sprite out of Burger King. Yayyy
27th - Went to local bar for few drinks to welcome people who were arriving late
28th - Woke up still wrecked with notion to cut all my hair off. Found first place and now have short hair. Yay! Hit the gay scene. God they're a rabid bunch in Sydney. Went and spoke to some guy who did my head in but thought fuck it. Pulled him, still did my head in so fucked off to another bar. Yay
29th - Went coastal walk to get to free BBQ. Was so hungover that had to go back to hostel and sleep. Went to local wild bar where mates did wet t-shirt competition. Had few drinks and got wrecked very quickly (due to amount of alcohol in system methinks). Ended up home early
30th - Drank at hostel chilling out for once and watching some DVDs
31st - Best New Year ever!! Went on a cruise that had free alcohol all night. Got great view of the fireworks and it was great atmosphere on boat. Defi0 Comments 175 weeks

am alright now, lol just freak out every now and again 
it's UNUSUAL for people to pass all the exams 1st time, I hav resigned myself to the fact that I am likely to fail at least one of them...not that I'm not gonna try my damndest to pass them all but when u r working full time and ur only free time is really as sat and sun...it's hard! LOL Tee hee, aw yeh u should I wanna go to TITP for ever lol

lol it is gonna be AMAZING . Well if u think bwt it grad job applications usually begin about October to start the next September, u would be to l8 2 apply for a grad job for this Sept I think so u could look at applying when u get back for a job that starts next year? xxx

I am so totally jealous but also very proud of wot uv dun take it ur jst wrkng all hours the nw then 2 save for more travelling? Im alright, stressing out a bit at times coz the job and study are hardgoing and my sal is so pitiful that i cnt afford 2 go out and let off steam much it should b all gravy cum january if i pass all my exams but that's AGES away! Lol u def did the right thing career sucks ass sumtimes im jst ranting coz havnt had the best wknd, all in all it aint TOO bad, i actually enjoy the job x x x

exercise sounds like a good plan! Ive stopped the classes... not done them in ages cause sarah works during the day now and i wouldnt go myself! I'm planning to start other classes with chloe... need to get fit... that would be awesome!! nice little bit to keep you goin when you get back home anyway!! aw thats a lot sooner than i thought!
I'm excited!! subcrawl sounds like a good idea... i think that if you give everyone enough notice they would be able to get the day off... yeah i suppose... i did put in the work but i still think i may have failed a couple of classes but im just going to forget about it until i get the results through... nothing i can do to change it now!! I'll def let you know when i get them australia day?? whats that for?? i want to go to the beach i'm sooo jealous!! lol xxx

I doubt it but im not going to worry about them, theres nothing i can do now! thats not bad! a bit of an early start but no weekend!! lol!! sounds fun! I've got no plans for the summer really. me and chris are tlkin about goin away again but theres nothing set in stone. i was thinking of gettin a voluntary placement somewhere for this stupid course... apparently i need experience! lol not looked into either tho. im gonna do it after i get these exams over with! xxxx

yep... had my first one today! Didnt go too well. it was a lot harder than i thought it would be and i ran out of time but awkt well!! i cant afford to dwell on it lol my next one is on thursday and then ive got two more, monday and tuesday!! aw that sounds good!! what are the hours like?? lol doesnt sound like you! have you got your next adventure planned yet?? xxx
