    1. Superman (1978)

The first and best comic book movie ever!!!! It set the bench mark for all other Comic film; few have reached the same greatness this has none have surpassed. Now that says something ehh? This film has had a huge impact on my life. It may be sad but it’s true. I love this film. To me nothing about it is bad… yes even the turning back time part.

What makes this film extra special? Yes that’s right, Christopher Reeve. He is Superman. Everything about his performance is perfect. His pose his execution of the dialogue. Everything. He rocks. His Clark Kent is completely the opposite it’s amazing to watch. He may not be the world’s greatest actor but he is Superman.

As we drift into space and those letters and John Williams brilliant score erupts onto the screen you know that something amazing is about to follow.

The script to this film is epic and what adds to the vastness of this project is have director Richard Donner has shot it. ON Krypton all seems Shiny and quite. But, when we get to Smallville in Kansas there’s a Golden shine to everything. It’s peaceful its quant, it’s sort of like it never changes everything is always happy. Then we jump to Metropolis where everything is busy the hustle and bustle of the city. It is also when the jokes start hitting and the humor begins. It’s like three different movies in one.

As I stated above Christopher Reeves portrayal of The Man of Steel is amazing. Gene Hackman is awesome as Lex Luthor but what adds to his performance is the characters that surround him. Otis and Miss Teschmacher add to his fury and the comedy from all their scenes together. Marlon Brando reading his lines in this movie has always been a joy for me to watch. Morgot Kidder isn’t my favourite Lois Lane but she handles the role really well. This film was cast well and it pays off as you watch the chemistry unfold on screen.

I’m finding it hard to describe my love for this film but trust me it is amazing. It’s a beautifully cast, passionately directed, masterfully written epic film. It’s a joy for me to watch and I’d recommend it in a heartbeat for anyone to watch. It’s an amazing achievement and I pity anyone who claims they can’t watch it because it’s old. Hang on I don’t pity as much as hate them.

Superman the Movie rocks go check it out.

The list at long last has ended.
    Thanks – Paul

  • Top Ten Comic Book Films No. 2

Right Ive been away but now its time for the final two. This my top ten Comic book Films... tell me yours?
    2. Spider-man 2 (2004)

Spider-man rocked, you know that don’t you? Well Spider-man 2 had a lot to live up to…. Yes it does deliver but you should know that aswell. The entire cast and crew return with the addition of Alfred Molina as Dr. Otto Octavious (say it with a German accent aloud- its fun).

The film takes place 2 years after Spider-man and we see that Peter is making a right balls of things. He has his freelance job at the Bugle taking pics of himself (sounds wrong I know) along with a Pizza delivery job with a 29 minute delivery guarantee. Thing is his alter ego gets in the way of this and he can’t keep a balance. He has no personal life to the degree that he forgets his birthday. MJ is in a Broadway show and dating Captain John Jameson, but Peter still lingers in her heart. While Harry now in charge of Oscorp is obsessed with stopping Spider-man. Along with that Comic Book goodness we get Dock Ock. When a lab experiment goes wrong (what are the odds).

Right I love this flick!!!! Comic book gold start to finish bar the bad voice over at the start. Sam Raimi sort of held back from his distinct style on the first one but he really unleashes on this one. There’s a distinct style to no. 2 with scenes like in the Dr Surgery playing right back to his Evil Dead roots. Tobey McGuire is really good as Peter again with some great comedic moments. Kirsten Dunst is meh as always. I just learned of her internet nickname the other day- Snaggletooth. I love it. James Franco is the unsung star of this franchise. He is fantastic as Harry with all the added evilness and slapping Peter around a couple of times just ads to it. Molina is great, he brings just the right amount of charm and menace to pull of the eight limbed freak. Of course there’s the Bruce Campbell cameo. Hilarious! The Only way to describe it. (I once told someone that Bruce Campbell was my Uncle – he believed me).

The effects I heard were described as cartoonish. Heres what I say to the person that said that –“Fuck you!” There incredible almost flawless, nuff said.

The final confrontation between Spidey and Ock is so….. joygasm describes it best. It goes from the top of a clock tower onto the clock then in the air then onto a moving train then onto a road back onto the train…. Phew. So damn cool. It’s a comic book battle. IT just looks so damn cool. There’s also a nice moment when all the people on the train tell Spidey that they won’t tell no one what he looks like. Then Spidey rescues Mj stops Ock and saves the city. He gets the girl in the end as well.

This film is amazing. Everything about just rocks!!!!! The acting, the directing, the music, the effects!!!! All great. Check it out now!!!

All I have left to say is “Avi Arad raped Spider-man 3!!!!!!”

    3. Batman Begins (2005)

Nipples are like a curse word these days.

Alright before this one sets off I think I should say what I think about The Burton/Schumacher Films. Right well Ill start off by saying Batman & Robin is an awful film and I hate for that very fact. I still don’t understand why I’ve seen it at least 6 times. Its shit. Batman Forever is not shit it’s just not brilliant. It’s a fun Batman movie that’s really it. Val Kilmer was alright and Chris O Donnell is acceptable as Robin. Right Tim Burtons flicks. I like them they go in order of release in my opinion. Batman Returns is too crowded and Batman talks the back seat in a film about his villains and the occasional appearance of Batman or Bruce Wayne. In Batman something’s missing I’m not exactly sure what that is but it’s not there. Keaton’s Batman Rocks! Its Second best in my opinion. Nicholson’s Joker is good but way too over hyped. Burton’s style and flare is in the film but it’s still missing something.

That something on the other hand is in Batman Begins. When I saw this film I was literally blown away. That was the best Batman Film I had ever seen! I found it hard to put what I’d seen into words it’s almost two years later and I struggle to say how much I loved Begins. Batman’s origins had only been glimpsed in other Bat Films but Batman Begins shows you why Bruce made the choice he did. How he trained why he chose his suit and why Gotham needs a Batman. The cast is amazing. Katie Holmes is the weak part of the cast. I’m not saying that she’s an awful actress I’m just saying compared to talent of the cast she’s wooden and useless serving little more purpose than Bruce’s conscious and an actual female in the cast. I’ll start this at the top. Christian Bale is Batman, he’s Bruce Wayne. He nailed it. He’s the definitive Batman in my opinion. Every scene he is a joy to watch. Michael Cain is fantastic as Alfred and it has got to be in his contract that he gets to say “Did you know….?” once a film. Go on say it with a cockney accent and see what you said like. Liam Neeson as Henry Duccard/ Ra’s al Ghul is fantastic. Cillian Murphy as The Scarecrow is more menacing with his mask off but the best performance of the sub cast is Gary Oldman (My spell check is telling me to change it to Oldham) as Detective Gordon. That was a highlight of the film.

Director Christopher Nolan is one of the greatest directors and the go at the moment and he creates a fantastic Gotham. One of the major factors of this Batman film is it has to be real. You watch and say “Yeah this is possible, now only to be a Billionaire willing to give up his evenings”. Batsman’s gadgets are grounded in a reality the plot lines god and the suit he wears finally makes sense.

Elements of Frank Millers Batman: Year One are in the script (that’s a very good thing) but what Nolan has done over all is create a Batman movie about Batman. We follow Bruce on his journey with don’t see occasional appearances by him while the villains rule the screen!! Batman Begins is an amazing achievement for the film Makers because just 8 years before hand it was feared that the final nail had been put in the coffin with Batman & Robin.

Batman Begins rocks and that’s just a simple fact. It has everything a comic book film needs and the funniest part about is that it’s highly plausible and expensive but not that hard to do. I’m interested in winning the lotto now. One other thing to add to this is The Tumbler. It’s the new Batmobile. What a car! I could use that getting around!

Alright Paul, just dropping a line to let you know I've got two very important Stand-Up gigs in the next few weeks! The first is on April 1st,

    http://www.bebo.com/MiniEvent.jsp?Mi...

and another on the 8th April

    http://www.bebo.com/MiniEvent.jsp?Mi...

if you can make it to one or both, that would be really great! I've been a bit slow on the blog-writing recently, I've been saving it all up for these gigs. the way it works, if the event organisers see that I can attract a crowd, then I'll get a regular gig, maybe every two weeks. if you can help at all, I'd really appreciate it! And bring your friends!
