- SOCIALIST YOUTH is the youth section of the Socialist Party. It is an organisation run for young people and run by young people. We have branches of Socialist Youth throughout the country, north and south, where members get involved in campaigns and activity and discuss political ideas and issues. Socialist Youth is open to all people who are sick of the fact that we are not represented anywhere.
We fight on a number of issues, such as: Anti-War, Racism, Low Pay, Sectarianism, Sexism, Student Fees and Envirnomental Destruction.
We oppose the domination of the world by the giant multi-national corporations and the capitalist system that maintains their rule. We are building a socialist alternative to the bankruptcy of capitalism, which can only offer a future of poverty and warThe aim of Socialist Youth is to organise young people in the fight to change society and build Socialism. If you agree with our ideas, if you agree that capitalism offers no future for young people, then join!

No to slave labour youth schemes – For real, decent jobs NOW!
18,400 young people in Northern Ireland are languishing on the Job Seeker Allowance (JSA) of £50.95 a week. By the end of the year it is expected at least 1 in 7 young people will be on the dole.
There is no real assistance for young people looking for work. After six months of signing on, young people are forced onto the Steps to Work programme. This programme provides advice in CV writing, interview skills and filling in application forms. The problem for young people though is not how to fill in forms – there are hardly any jobs on offer! According to the Job Centre’s online database only 1,500 jobs are on offer for 46,000 people on JSA.
The British government’s response has been to create a slave labour scheme in the form of the Flexible New Deal and the Welfare Reform Bill. This means the 250,000 young people on the dole face being forced into working for benefits – the equivalent of working £1.73 an hour for a 35 week! No new jobs will be created. In reality it means supplying slave labour to bosses who won’t have to pay a penny in wages. The Northern Ireland Executive could now attempt to copy this move.
A similar programme was brought in by Maggie Thatcher in 1983 called the Youth Training Scheme. This resulted in young people being conscripted into benefit-paid work groups. People were pushed into pointless tasks such as digging holes and filling them in again or painting buildings that had only been painted a few weeks before!
These degrading schemes and the lack of real jobs resulted in a backlash with a school student strike of 200,000 young people in 1985. Youth Fight for Jobs is demanding no return to youth slave labour programmes. Instead we want a real job creation scheme of socially useful work that pays a minimum of £8 an hour.

Shame on Subway - Sign the petition online
Subway sack young worker while she was 5 months pregnant.
Subway sacked Natalia Syzmanska under spurious health and safety grounds that didn't stand up under appeal. An online petition has been launched to put pressure on Subway.
http://www.petitiononline.com/subway...
The actions of Subway in sacking a worker who would have been looking for maternity leave is a disgrace that cannot be ignored.
A picket of Subway on Great Victoria St, Belfast this Friday (28th November) between 12.30-1pm.

Caroline Haugheyhace 75 semanasHey there everyone! I need your help! I am sending two package...first one is to a really clever wee Palestinian girl call Nada. She lives on al'amari camp, Ramallah! She wants books, as many as she can get her hands on. She is 14 so if you have any you want to donate let me know. The second is for a comrade in Cuba. His name is Ariel and I am trying to get my hands on a copy of George Orwells '1984' in spanish. Gave him my English copy and he wants his mam (who doesn't speak English) to read it. Also a copy of 'Think and grow rich' by Napoleon Hill and an old mobile hand set. I would really appreciate any help! Also, does anyone know of any organisations who take over Palestinians to Ireland? Up the revolution!

Rooster McDuffhace 75 semanasGood luck northern comrades, let us move beyond repressive sectarian politics and look for genuine worker's democracy.

Socialist Youth Belfasthace 86 semanasI think that as a socialist it is vitally important that we deal with both local issues that face all of the working class and try to campaign on these issues. Which the Socialist Party and Socialist Youth do try to do.
In the north at the moment SY and the SP are to the forefront in campaigning against water charges an anti-working class double tax and fighting low pay.
However international events and struggles are also of great importance - capitalism is a global system and therefore we need a global fight back. This is why SY and the SP are affilated to the Committee for a Workers' International with sections 35 different countries. We are one world party that campaigns across every continent.
