COMEDIAN Chris Lilley is back with a new mockumentary - this time taking aim at the 21st century male.

Called Angry Boys, the 12-part half-hour TV series will start pre-production on Monday and will be shot in Australia and overseas, the ABC announced today.

"Shooting in a mock documentary style, Angry Boys explores what it means to be a 21st century boy by putting the male of the species under the microscope," the ABC said in a statement.

In an Australian first, the series will be co-produced with renowned US network HBO, which screens Lilley's hit mockumentary series Summer Heights High.

It will also be produced in association with the UK's BBC. While aimed at a worldwide audience, it will premiere in Australia first.

Lilley's last shows Summer Heights High, which screened in Australia in 2007, and We Can Be Heroes, 2006, were ratings winners for the ABC. They featured popular characters such as drama teacher Mr G, and students Jonah Takalua and Ja'mie King.

Lilley said he was delighted to play with a bunch of new characters in Angry Boys.

"There will be new characters and lots of surprises for the audience," Lilley said in a statement.

"And I'm really excited about having a longer-running series to work with."

ABC TV executive head of content creation Courtney Gibson said the scripts were "absolutely terrific".

"Once again Chris is pushing comedy and character somewhere really challenging and ambitious," she said.

"Moving forward with HBO and the BBC as partners means the series will play on the world stage right after we premiere it here in Australia."

HBO Entertainment president Sue Naegle said she was sure US audiences would love Angry Men.

"Chris Lilley combines a wicked sense of humour with fearless insights into human nature, which gives his comedy a universal appeal," she said.

A casting call went out in the US on Wednesday looking for three actors of certain ages to play roles in what was described at the time as "The Untitled Chris Lilley HBO Project".

The project is believed to be the ABC/HBO co-production HBO big wig Michael Lombardo spoke about in March when he confirmed the powerful US cable network would be teaming with ABC Australia on a Lilley series.

The search is on for an African-American female, aged 18-25, to play a model called LaFonda, an African-American male, aged 50-65 to play a character called Carter, and a male Japanese-American professional skateboarder, aged 16-20 to play Corey.

HBO broadcast Lilley's hit series Summer Heights High in the US last year and the comic has told how he had turned down "lots of money" to make an Americanised version of the show.

"They wanted me to do it again in an American accent - all these terrible ideas," Lilley said. "I wouldn't let it happen. I spent so long working on the characters, I hate the thought of someone else playing them."

Lilley's management, RGM, did not return calls.

Jonah Takalua is a 13-year-old school boy in year 8 at Summer Heights High. He is of Tongan descent and lives with his father. Jonah, however acts up at school, treating his teachers with disrespect and bullying younger students. He is at serious risk of being expelled.
Summer Heights High is Jonah's third school after being expelled from two others in eighteen months for setting fire to a student's locker and defacing a staff member's car respectively. Jonah now attends "Gumnut Cottage", a remedial class for students at Summer Heights High who have reading difficulties and he is stated to have a reading level of an eight year old.
