  • How easy is it to get to York College?

These six students come from a variety of towns and cities spread over the North to study at York College. Read on to find out why they travel so far to come to college......

    Name: Jazmine Milner

    Age: 16

    Where do you live: Selby

Previous School / College: Brayton College

I came to York College because the variety and quality of courses is much better than those on offer closer to home. Travelling into York gives me the chance to study subjects such as Media and Sociology, as well as meeting new people from all over.
I travel into college on the bus from Selby, which only takes 45 minutes and costs £4 per day.

    Name: Louise Stockdale

    Age: 17

    Where do you live: Norton

Previous School / College: Norton College

I wanted to do a National Diploma in 3D Design Craft, and this course wasn’t on offer in Norton or Malton so I chose to study at York College. This course has given me loads of new skills and will give me a good foundation if I choose to continue studying into Higher Education.
I travel into college on the Coastliner bus, which takes around one hour, but only costs me £3.60 per day with my saver card.

    Name: Pippa Bedford

    Age: 16

    Where do you live: Thirsk

Previous School / College: Thirsk School

As the sixth form at Thirsk didn’t offer the courses I wanted to take, I chose to enrol at York College. Studying A levels in Media, Psychology and Music Technology has been an enjoyable experience and I’ve made loads of new friends.
Living in Thirsk means I need to get a train then a bus to get to college. The train takes about 20 minutes and the bus journey is a further 15 minutes. I have a travel pass that costs £315 per year and I’m fortunate enough to receive some funding from North Yorkshire County Council towards travel costs, as the courses I take aren’t on offer closer to home.

    Name: Kieron Spry

    Age: 20

    Where do you live: Kirkbymoorside

Previous School / College: Raincliffe School

The painting and decorating course and facilities at York College are the main reason I travel on the bus to college three days a week. The bus costs £5 a day and the ride is an hour and a half. The course has given me the skills to go into the trade if that’s what I choose to do.

    Name: Rachel Daly
    Age: 16
    Where do you live: Harrogate
Previous School / College: Rossett School, Harrogate
I came to York College because I wanted to study for a National Diploma in Sport and York College also offered the Football Development Centre training, which is a real bonus. I really enjoy my course; it is very engaging and although the work is demanding the training sessions at the Football Development Centre are of a particularly good standard.
I have a 40 minute train ride from Harrogate to York, followed by a 10 minute bus journey. I think the journey is well worth it because the course I am studying is absolutely ideal for me.

    Name: Andrew Whitfield
    Age: 22
    Where do you live: Newcastle
Previous School / College: Newcastle College

I travel to York from Newcastle on block release from work to study Stonemasonry at York College. The company I work for in Newcastle chose to send me to York College because of the Stonemasonry Centre of Vocational Excellence and because a lot of other workers at the company have been trained there in the past.
I drive down from Newcastle for the placement, which takes around 2 hours, and stay in York for the full week before driving home. Construction Skills find and pay for accommodation with families in York, so the trip only costs around £40 for petrol. Coming to York also gives me a short break from work and improves my skills which will improve my work overall

  • Volunteering!

There are lots of different ways to get involved, and it’s entirely up to you what you do, when you do it, and how much time you can give. We can find you an individual placement or a group to work with. If you can’t spare time for a regular commitment, why not join in a one-off project during a holiday, or contribute to a fund-raising event?

We belong to York “V”, so you can register to count your volunteer hours towards a nationally recognised certificate. If you’re already doing volunteer work, e.g. as a junior sport coach, or a young leader for brownies, you can count that towards a V certificate.

There are three different drop-in sessions for information, training and meeting people, on Wednesdays in 4F039, starting at
    12.25
    1.10
    3.35

If you can’t get to any of the sessions, you can still take part in most of the events. Just email Kaye Green (kgreen@yorkcollege.ac.uk) for information until Christmas or Jenny Troyna (jtroyna@yorkcollege.ac.uk) from January.
