    • Remaking History

      Why must the companies of Hollywood and all major american film studios feel compelled to remake historic films?
      For many years writers and directors (of all countries) have been remaking both classic and lesser known films, but in the last 10 years in particular, American film makers have remade more and more films than ever. It has gotten to the point where we are seeing nearly at least 1 remake a month. Nearly every film now in the cinema is a remake or an adaptation or a story and it has now seriously begun to piss me off (sorry to be vulgar).

      "The film was made nearly 30 years ago and there are plenty of reasons to remake it"

      This was said by a director who remade The Fog back in 2005. The main plot of a ship full of lepers returning from the dead to seek revenge was intact but key elements were changed. Such as the captain of the ship being reunited with a past love (which never appeared in the original) which in fact turned out to be the main female character who was in fact living, but turned out to be a ghost. Both film and director have sunk without a trace, much like the Elizabeth Dane. This is just one example of a poor remake. Many remakes lose the edge of an original as many of the original films are set many years ago, so any issues or ideas that were both cutting edge and relevant to that point in time, are now obsolete.

      The genre that has suffered the most is of course Horror. Many Japanese horror films such as Ringu and Grudge have been remade and spawned their own sequels. But lacked the creepy and haunting atmosphere of their Asian parents. American films pay too much attention to sex and rely on the sex appeal of their stars to sell a film. But now the American film makers are now looking at their own cinema history and started with Texas Chainsaw Massacre. The remake did very well, but again relied on scares and music and again sex appeal to sell itself, and did not focus on the disturbing issues of cannibalism and horrific murder. Other classic horror films that followed were Hills Have Eyes, Amityville Horror and Dawn of the Dead. But now, Nightmare on Elm Street and Friday the 13th have both been confirmed to be remade by the same people.

      Why must directors do this? Are they incapable of even just trying to come up with another idea for a film? Has every single idea in the book of stories been told? Frankly, this may sound harsh but I do in-fact find it all very pathetic that writers and film directors have to update a film simply because they can and to make a couple of cheap bucks.

      Ah 1997, what a great year. They cloned a sheep, there was a talking chihuahua in Mexico, Buffy started to slay demons, and the Tamagotchi began to rule children's hearts. But it was also the year in which something very special was created.....

      The WWF Attitude Era

      1997 - 2001

      The WWF had been very much a family program with a very colourful atmosphere. But, the writers and owners of the company began to realize that this wasn't enough to hold the viewers ever wandering minds and attentions, they needed something with more guts, something more violent, something funny. They created The Attitude Era. It was a breakthrough in sports entertainment, the superstars of the WWF were given new gimmicks, new outfits, new freedoms. The AE saw the rising of many stars such as Stone Cold Steve Austin, Triple H and The Rock. The now legendary tag team D-Generation X was created out of Shawn Michaels and Triple H who delighted and shocked fans with their exploitations. Other stars to follow were The NewAge Outlaws, Mankind/Cactus Jack, The Hardy Boyz, The Dudley Boyz and even The McMahon family.

      The matches themselves evolved. The AE brought about the Hardcore match along with the Hardcore Championship Title that brought about new rules and a new image to compete with. The ladder matches were once again made famous by the next generation of risk takers, and would eventually evolved into the dangerous Tables, Ladders and Chairs (TLC) match. But perhaps the match that is now the most dangerous and infamous of all time, The Hell in the Cell, which has taken years off many stars careers and their lives, and became The Undertakers match.

      The AE finally peaked in the year 2000. From the Royal Rumble's Cactus Jack vs Triple H Street Fight to Armageddon's 6-Man Hell in the Cell, the main events became legendary as did the rivalries which involved Cactus Jack, Triple H, The Rock, Stone Cold and The McMahons. Perhaps also one of the biggest returns of all time occurred during May 2000 when The Undertaker returned but as The American Badass biker.

      The end of the AE came after the end of 2001 and the next generation of superstars arrived to entertain the masses. Though WWE is as popular as ever, The Attitude Era is regarded as the peak of all the history of the WWE. Although the WWE has tried to emulate the AE with the return of DX, The Hardyz, Hell in the Cell matches and old traditions, it's never had the same impact and velocity and electricity.....
