- The Union of Students in Ireland is uniting students across the country to fight the reintroduction of college fees.
The Union of Students in Ireland fundamentally opposes student tuition fees. Join our campaign to fight any attempts by the Government of Ireland to introduce any financial barriers to studying in higher education
Why USI Opposes Fees.
- Fees stop people from going to college and cause many others to drop out. USI believes that nobody should be locked out of education because they can’t afford it.
- Fees mean longer hours at part-time jobs, leading to more stress and lower grades.
- Fees leave students in debt – often for life.
College is already hugely expensive without fees – €10,000 per year of study according to Bank of - Ireland (includes Registration Fee, accommodation, rent, books, bills, food etc). Imagine the cost of fees on top of this.
- Once fees come in, they will only go up and more and more people will be charged.

Student leaders gather in protest over fees
August 13th, 2008
Posted by USI in press
Student leaders will today gather at the Department of Education and Science to protest over the proposed plan by the Minister for Education and Science, Batt O’Keefe, to reintroduce third level fees.
According to the Union of Students in Ireland the reintroduction of fees would have a dramatic impact on middle income families already struggling with the cost of education.
The demonstration is described as a “statement of intent” by USI, President Shane Kelly, with more protests planned when students return to college in September. “We are sending the message to the government that if they attempt to reintroduce fees they will have a major fight on their hands”.
“The government have signalled their intent to pile even more financial burdens on students and their families. At a time of economic hardship this would be a misguided and callous move and will be heavily resisted by students and others.”
Shane Kelly continued “At a time when students should be celebrating their leaving certificate results, they are now facing into an uncertain future”.
“If the government was serious about funding education properly, they should examine the tax system and close off all the loop holes and tax shelters that allow some of the wealthiest in our society to pay almost no tax at all”
USI is committed to a free and fair education system, where everyone can reach their potential regardless of how wealthy they are”.
USI will be joined by other student leaders, youth groups and political parties in their protest.

Students ready to fight after Minister’s “misguided” comments on fees
The Union of Students in Ireland have condemned the Minister for Education for wanting to “pile further burdens on students and their families” after his comments regarding the possible reintroduction of third level fees.
USI President Shane Kelly said “The return of third level fees would be disastrous for students and their families. The costs of college are already an average of €38,000 according to a recent BOI study.”
USI warned that fees would deter people from entering higher education, pointing to studies in the UK which showed that fees deter people from lower and middle income backgrounds from applying to college.
“In a struggling economy we need to ensure as many people as possible can access third level and not have their nose pressed up against the widow”
The USI President said “not only would fees hurt students and their families, but they would put at risk the very idea of our knowledge economy by placing a barrier in front those wishing to further their education”.
Dismissing the minister’s claim that fees would only affect the “better off”, USI said fees would hurt lower and middle income families that already faced financial worries because of the economic downturn.
Students vowed to join with parents groups to fight any attempt to introduce fees. “Students have always fought to defend free education. If the government tries to introduce fees they will have a fight on their hands”.0 comentarios 462 días
