The UEFA Europa League (previously called the UEFA Cup) is an annual UEFA-organised football cup competition for eligible European football clubs. It is the second most prestigious European club football contest after the UEFA Champions League. Clubs qualify for the competition based on their performance in their national leagues and cup competitions.
The competition began in 1971 and replaced the Inter-Cities Fairs Cup, but, for UEFA footballing records purposes, the Inter-Cities Fairs Cup is not recognised as the direct predecessor of the UEFA Cup. In 1999, the UEFA Cup Winners' Cup was abolished and merged with the UEFA Cup. For the 2004/05 competition a groupand changed qualifying criteria.

The current Champions are Atletico Madrid after a 2-1 win after extra time against Fulham FC in May 2010.

The most successful clubs in the competition are, in chronological order, Juventus, Internazionale and Liverpool (3 Titles Each)

      MANCHESTER CITY:
      Midfielder Yaya Toure still believes Juventus are Europa League favourites despite the Blues topping Group A after the first game.

      Striker Mario Balotelli expects to have recovered from his knee injury by late November and is likely to miss all of Citys Europa League Group games.

      Captain Steven Gerrard has not travelled with the team for their Europa League match at FC Utrecht.
