5 Albany teens hurt in accident

Five teenagers from Albany, Mo., were injured when their minivan rolled into a bridge Sunday in rural Gentry County.

Shane E. Black, 16, was driving east on Wayman Church Road in a 1998 Ford Windstar at 5:25 p.m. when he went off the right side of the roadway, overcorrected back onto the road, then overcorrected again off the right side of the road and struck a bridge, forcing the vehicle to overturn and come to rest on the drivers side, according to a Missouri State Highway Patrol crash report.

Mr. Black was partially ejected from the vehicle and was transported by ambulance to Northwest Medical Center in Albany with serious injuries. He was later taken by helicopter to Heartland Regional Medical Center in St. Joseph, where he was in fair condition Sunday night, according to a nursing supervisor.

Four passengers also suffered injuries and were transported to Northwest Medical Center.

Alisha Dillivan, 13, and Michael L. Emery, 15, sustained moderate injuries, and Garrett C. Hamilton, 16, suffered serious injuries. Meggin Geyer, 13, suffered serious injuries and was later transferred to Children's Mercy in Kansas City, where she remained in serious condition, according to hospital officials. Staff at Northwest Medical Center declined to comment on the status of the other three patients.

None of the five teenagers were wearing safety belts.
