- Shelter believes everyone needs a home in a place where they can thrive. We help thousands of people a year fight for their rights, get back on their feet, and find and keep a home. We also tackle the root causes of bad housing by campaigning for new laws, policies, and solutions.
Our work won't stop until there's a home for everyone.
It is a crucial time to join us - Scotland's politicians have promised that everyone should have a home by 2012. The countdown has begun - help us make sure that they stick to their promise.

Campaign Success at Haddington!
We had a brilliant day at Haddington last Friday, with over 120 new supporters stopping to draw a home in support of the Countdown to 2012 campaign! Scottish Labour Leader Iain Gray, MSP, also came by to draw a home in support of the campaign. Check out our photos from the day in the Countdown to 2012 album. Countdown to 2012
More than 40,000 in Scotland become homeless every year and now over 200,000 people are on housing waiting lists across the country.
People like Claire and her young children who are still desperately waiting for a permanent house after spending a horrific time in a homeless unit.
Families like Sharon's who are forced to live in a temporary overcrowded flat, desperate for a permanent home with enough room for them all.

What can you do?
2012 is the year by which Scotland's politicians have promised to give everyone in Scotland the right to a home. But without new homes, new rights are meaningless.
With three years to go, the countdown to 2012 has begun. Build a home for Scotland and help us convince the Scottish Government to fund more new affordable homes to rent by 2012.

Campaign Update
Thanks to everyone who took part in our Noticed Served on Bad Landlords campaign and emailed their local councillors to put an end to bad landlords.
We’ve compiled your stories & councillor responses into a new report: Landlord Registration in Scotland: 3 years on.
We found the scheme was failing to protect tenants’ rights & undermined good landlords by not effectively dealing with the minority of bad ones.
The report’s winging its way to the Scottish Gov & local councils now, asking them to take firm action to get rid of the worst landlords.

Maybe its Karma that the British People are getting evicted after centuries of inflicting it on others ..... ????
that being said everyone deserves the right to a shelter no matter what race, gender etc...

Thanks for sharing your experience. We hope it's all sorted out now. Have you clicked the link to write to your councillors? It only takes a couple of minutes and it would be good for them to hear a first hand account of how unreasonable some landlords can be.

they tried to evict me over 1 months rent arrears. I wasnt out partying my wages were short because my boss mixed up. i was on marternity leave after just giving birth to my 2nd. The council refused to come to an agreement before court. If it wasnt for citizens advice we would have been on the streets xxx
