BANKS of MARBLE
'BANKS of MARBLE'
A SONG FOR OUR TIMES!
in the 1940s Les Rice wrote the song Banks of Marble.
sixty years later it is a Song for Our Times.
according to folksinger Pete Seeger:
"LES RICE farms across the Hudson from me, near Newburgh (New York State). like most small farmers, he was getting intolerably squeezed by the big companies which sold him all his fertilizer, insecticide and equipment, and those big companies dictated to him the prices he would get for his produce. Out of that squeeze came this song."
this song is a favourite of mine and has been very popular in ireland for many, many years. i have been singing it for many, many years, and have now finally recorded it; a propos, unfortunately.
although back in the "good auld days" we used to sing "we'll blow up those banks of marble..and shoot the guards on every door!!"...with a massive bang on the bodhran to accentuate the explosion!!!
ah!......gettin' soft in me old age...eh!!
it is available only on digital download from my website @ http:www.raycollinsmusic.com

NEW RELEASE: 1969-AUGUST-1984
Colin Glen Music announces the release ‘1969-AUGUST-1984’.
The recording is a compilation of two songs: ‘The Ballad of Gerald McAuley’ and ‘The Ballad of Sean Downes’.
Gerald McAuley was my next-door neighbour in Colinward Street.
He was shot dead by a loyalist gunman while defending his neighbours
who were being burnt out of their homes by a loyalist mob in Bombay Street, in Belfast, in August 1969. Gerald was a member of Na Fianna Eireann.
Sean Downes was a young man who was killed in August 1984 by an RUC officer outside my former home in Andersonstown in Belfast.
He died trying to defend protestors who were being attacked by the RUC and the British Army during an anti-Internment commemoration rally.
This release is available on digital download at my web site:
