Stars rally for charity golf event

On the 23rd August Formby Hall will play host to a charity golf event in support of the Michael Shields appeal, followed by an auction of memorabilia to raise funds for the families of both Michael and Steve Cook so that they continue their quest to bring their sons home

Cheshire police have returned from Crete where, in conjunction with the British consulate and Cretian police, they announced a reward of €7000 Euros for information leading to the discovery of missing student Steve Cook.

THE family of missing man Steven Cook say their spirits have been lifted after a charity auction raised cash to help them to continue their search.

Liverpool fan Steve, of Swallow Drive, Sandbach, went missing while on holiday with a group of former Sandbach School friends at Malia in Crete on September 1 last year.

Eight months on and no evidence has emerged to his whereabouts despite a number of high profile television appeals both at home and abroad.

The auction, held at the Oak-field Pub at Anfield on Saturday after the Liverpool-Aston Villa game, raised about £3,000.

Liverpool memorabilia and an England football shirt signed by Michael Owen all went under the hammer.

There was also a donation from the family of another Liverpool fan, Michael Shields, who is being held in jail in Bulgaria for an attack on a local barman which he vehemently denies.


Steve's family are now working with police in both England and Greece to ensure that the money raised can be used as a reward for any information that could help locate the Liverpool University Student.


Steve's brother Chris said: 'The auction went very well. The family of Michael Shields donated a life-size replica of the European Cup to auction which we felt was very generous considering their current situation.


''We had about 60 to 70 items to auction and the support was fantastic.


'We hope the money will go towards jogging someone's memory in Greece or at home.


'If you think the average pension is £60 a month in Greece so £3,000 is a notable amount of money.


'We remain hopeful, and there's still a chance of finding Steve.


'Logic said if he had been attacked in the tourist area he would have been found.


'We are not looking at a worse case scenario.'
