Athletes Working Toward Hurricane Katrina Relief
I want to profile some professional athletes who have most recently donated time and money to post-Katrina relief efforts. I know I’ve come across as a bit pessimistic in the past when talking about pro athletes and activism, but today I’m feeling chipper.
NBA athlete Chris Duhon of the New York Knicks recently donated $100,000 to rebuild 21 basketball courts in New Orleans helping to rehabilitate 16 NORD (New Orleans Recreation Department) basketball courts citywide.
NFL quarterbacks Bret Favre (Greenbay) and Steve McNair (Baltimore) handed out 20 checks totaling $150,000 to help local football programs in south Mississippi recover from post Katrina damage.

Sustainable Everything
There's not a single consumer good I can think of that couldn't be made more eco-friendly. The shoes I'm wearing on my feet have rubber soles, meaning that they were made using petroleum. The table my computer rests on has a glass surface that could have been made from recycled glass, and I live in a nieghborhood without a recycling program. I know for a fact that there are hundreds of pounds of glass being wasted in Ocean Hill daily, let alone the rest of Brooklyn or the rest of the country.

I can't go very far these days without being reminded of the impending 2008 Beijing Summer Olympics. More specifically, I can't go very far these days without hearing about the terrible air quality in Beijing or the abysmal history of human rights abuses in The Peoples' Republic Of China. In a class I was taking last semester, we were discussing these very issues, and the discussion boiled down to one question:
Is allowing China to host the games just like rewarding its bad policies? Or is it bringing the issues to an international stage, bringing more attention to the issues and putting some pressure on the governing bodies of China?
