• AJ's Top Tips

  1. Wrap duck tape round poles/bottles to save space.
  2. Wrap the windshield all the way round the stove.
  3. Even though they are really annoying, try to ignore the mosquitoes.
  4. Drink lots, a happy mountaineer pees clear.
  5. For first aid, prevention is always better than a cure.
  6. When you have crampons on, walk like John Wayne.
  7. Tighten your tent in the morning and at night to stop it sagging.
  8. Tie your boots tight round the ankles to help stop blisters.
  9. Roll your tent long and thin, same length as the poles.
  10. Dont fall overboard.
  11. Put your wet socks between two pan lids on boiling water to dry them out.
  12. When sitting on glaciers/snow/wet stuff sit on one of your feet.
  13. Collect water from shallow water by digging a hole and waiting for the sediment to settle.
  14. Never pee into the wind.
  15. Fry things in water, its healthier and doesn't create much mess.
  16. To put your rucksack on sit it on your uphill knee then slide it over your shoulder.
  17. Eat a bite of chocolate every hour to maintain steady sugar levels instead of sugar highs/lows.
  18. When route finding look for the flattest and most constant route.
  19. When shitting in the great outdoors, go for the rocks then smudge it about so it washes away faster and people can see it.
  20. You can use spagnum moss as toilet paper becuase it is like a sponge and has antiseptic properties. The victorians also used it for tampons and wound dressings.
  21. When guessing a womens age, always guess lower rather than higher.
  22. For big expeditions take a pee bottle so you can pee in the tent and it dosnt freeze.
  23. If you are planning on taking a gap year save before you go so you don't end up in debt.
  24. Leave part of the inner door open in your tent so you get some ventilation.
  25. To save time, put suncream on at breakfast if it looks like it will be a nice day.
  26. Put lunch in the rucksack lid or pockets for easy access.
  27. If you are not near a stream, boil a small amount of water in the pan then use it to clean the pan and other cutlery etc.
  28. Dont lie on thermarests on bare ground unless you want a puncture!
  29. If your tent is wet in the morning, take the outer off as soon as possible to let it dry and save weight.
  30. If Peter the mountain goat is taking full strides shout at him.
  31. Dont forget to breathe.
  32. Put all your rubbish in one of the dinner packs then seal it so it wont spill.
  33. Stay in a group when walking up scree slopes and if a rock falls shout 'Below!' or 'Attention!' (in a french accent)
  34. Drink lots of water in the morning and evening to help stay hydrated and decrease the number of stops.
  35. Don't stand on wet slippery rocks...
  36. Add soup to the main meals, yummy!
  37. When setting off you should be slightly chilly because you warm up quickly, ' Be bold, start cold!'
  38. Wrap the tent inner/outer tight in a roll then you can strap it to any part of your bag.
  39. Pass messages down along the chain to help people.
  40. When going down steep sections, look at the slope from a diagonal to gauge the steepness and find the best way down.
  41. When you stop for a break, put on a warm layer so you dont cool down.
  42. Make sure you keep the tent inner dry.
  43. When using duck tape make sure the surface is dry and heat the tape up before applying.
  44. Make sure platapus/camelback screws are all done up well!
  45. Make sure you put crampons on the right feet, the buckles should be on the outside.
  46. Always keep the ice axe in the uphill hand with the pick facing behind you.
  47. Keep cameras close to the body so the batteries work for longer.
  48. Remember when you take crampons off, you cant walk on ice.
  49. When you're leading, make sure you look back every 5 minutes.
  50. When camping on ice, use a screwgate and prussik buried in the ice as an anchor.
  51. If ice screws dont screw clear the mush untill you hit good ice then screw.
  52. Dont take anything wet into the tent - leave boots
