Me, Myself, and I
The Glasgow Barrowland 2 (GB2) is the little brother of the renowned Glasgow Barrowland venue where music greats have graced its stage. The Barrowland is known for its excellent acoustics as well as its sprung dance floor. The Barrowland has become a particular favourite of many noted rock/pop acts and was recently voted the best music venue in the UK in a poll of British bands and in another survey amongst bands was voted second best venue in the world. Acts such as Bob Dylan and Oasis claim it as their favourite small venue.

The GB2 has an intimate 350 capacity, sitting directly below the legendary ballroom. It gives the cream of Scotland’s up and coming acts a taste of playing the Barrowland before making the leap to headlining the world famous Ballroom.

  • Jesca Hoop, Hunting My Dress album review

"Tom Waits's babysitter" seems a fairly arresting way to describe a new singer-songwriter. In Californian Jesca Hoop's case, it's bizarrely true. Thankfully, that's not the most interesting thing about her. Hunting My Dress is a nine-song collection of beautiful, pastoral compositions that sounds as if it could be the soundtrack for an autumnal Scandinavian vampire movie. Natural elements rear their head throughout – in the lyrics and literally, as in the case of The Kingdom, which features twittering birdsong. It's good enough to compare to the more wholesome elements of The White Album, Joanna Newsom's Ys and Elbow's quieter moments (Guy Garvey actually lends subtle backing vocals to the gingerbread-sweet Murder of Birds). Enchanting in parts, Hunting My Dress sounds like the sprouting of a wondrous new talent.

  • The Strange Boys: Album Review

As spring awakens and its rays of sunshine fleetingly emerge, a nation of pasty-faced hopefuls reach for the Ray-Bans and make like it's August in Ibiza. It's the British way. But if ever there was a soundtrack to fool you into false beliefs of summer abandonment, the 'TSBAGC' is surely a frontrunning contender. Drenched in a nonchalant, South Coast swagger, but shot throughout with Ryan Sambol's petulant, gravelly howl, The Strange Boys come on like a mid-'60s Rolling Stones messed over by the Black Lips; all major keys and jangling guitars, but with a filthy agenda. So, while their Beach Boys on mescaline tricks won't rewrite the rulebook, for reckless frivolity they'll do just fine

  • Black Lips

The ascendancy of Atlanta four-piece Black Lips in recent months is emphatically illustrated tonight by the packed-out Barrowlands 2, indicating that they’ve picked up plenty of new converts since their relatively quiet show at the ABC last year - and despite fellow US hip young things Vampire Weekend playing elsewhere in the city tonight. Combined with the unusually hot weather, the crammed venue almost feels as though Glasgows East End has been transplanted to somewhere distinctly more southern - an apposite sensation, given the moreish marriage of Central American passion and burned-out garage rock that Black Lips blast out tonight.

The band appear supremely comfortable in their wielding of influences, which range from the atonal, spastic blues of the Magic Band to the juddering garage of middle-period Velvet Underground; to describe them as ‘assured’ , though, might be misleading, given their infectiously laid-back attitude, which reveals a calm and mature attitude towards the absurdities of the music industry. Rattling through the favourites from current album ‘Good Bad Not Evil’ , including exuberant call to arms ‘Bad Kids’ , a collision of psychobilly and doo-wop, and single ‘O Katrina!’- the addictive simplicity of which has already earned it the feel of surf-garage classic - Black Lips also have plenty of other material to draw on tonight.

Indeed, its indicative of their admirable work ethic that after five years, the band already have four studio albums and two blistering live albums to their name, with the result that they find themselves in the unusual position of being an Exciting New Band playing what feels like a Greatest Hits set; and that idiosyncratic attitude - hedonistic and industrious - sums up their appeal. While other bands dipping into such a diverse body of heavily-mined influences might find themselves accused of lacking a coherent identity, or of indulging in parodic worship of the past, Black Lips confidently stamp their own character upon the generic melee; and while others prioritize commercial success, they never forget the simple, fundamental pleasures of the rock ‘n’ roll lifestyle, with the result that their music embodies them in a genuinely distinctive and authentic way.
