History
The club, founded in 1901, originally hails from the inner Dublin suburb of Ringsend. From the early 1920s until 1987 they played at Glenmalure Park, Milltown and became Ireland's most successful club. Shamrock Rovers have won more FAI Cups (24) and leagues (15) than any other Irish club. For many years, Rovers were Ireland's most prestigious team. Famous achievements included the winning of six FAI Cups in a row in the 1960s and four consecutive league titles (including three "doubles") in the 1980s. In addition, they were also the first Irish club to play in the European Cup, playing Manchester United in 1958. Further, the Shamrock Rovers were one of the European club teams which spent the 1967 season in the United States founding the North American Soccer League, representing Boston as the Boston Shamrock-Rovers.

Shamrock Rovers have also supplied more different players to the Republic of Ireland national football team (61 in all) than any other single club.
***
Famous players to have played for the club include: Jimmy Dunne Paddy Coad, Frank O'Neill, John Giles, Jim Beglin, and Eamon Dunphy. Irish Rugby international Tony Ward also played for the club for a period in the 1970s. Up until the 1970s, Shamrock Rovers were well supported, attracting over 20, 000 people regularly to Glenmalure Park and up to 40, 000 for Cup Finals and European matches at Dalymount Park. Ultimately a combination of poor results, competition from televised football and other attractions meant that by the 1980s the club's crowds averaged below 3, 000. Until recent times, Shamrock Rovers were still regarded as Ireland's premier club.

The club has not won a major trophy since 1994. In 1987, the club's home ground was sold by the then owners, the Kilcoyne family. It was subsequently demolished and developed for housing. Supporters waged a long and acrimonious but futile campaign to save the ground. Home games were boycotted ultimately forcing out the Kilcoynes as owners.
***
The club has been without a home from that time until the present. The most stable period since was while playing at the Royal Dublin Society's grounds in Ballsbridge between 1990 and 1996. During this time Rovers won a league trophy and attracted reasonable crowds. Since then the club have been trying to develop a stadium in Tallaght. The Tallaght Stadium project has run into severe planning and funding difficulties and it is unclear if the team will play there in the immediate future. In the meantime, the club's stature and support have dwindled into a pale shadow of what it formerly was. To add to the downturn in fortunes, the club suffered relegation from the Premier Division for the first time in it's history in 2005 and to complete a week of turmoil for the club, manager Roddy Collins was sacked in late November. Pat Scully Former Kilkenny City Manager and Shamrock Rovers Player was apointed as the new Shamrock Rovers Manager.
The Present
Shamrock Rovers played the 2005 season in Dalymount Park, home to Dublin rivals Bohemian FC and are playing 2006 season at Tolka Park north Dublin. The club's stadium, under construction in Tallaght until the club fell behind on construction costs, will be completed by the South Dublin County Council, who will run it as a municipal stadium with Shamrock Rovers as the preferred tenants, though some debate surrounds the justification of this. The club experienced severe financial troubles during the 2005 season and spent a period under Examinership. The supporters association, 'the 400 club', who had been bankrolling the club during the Examinership process assumed control of the club. The current season 2006 sees Rovers start very brightly rising to the top of the 1st Division, it remains to be seen if they can hold onto the top spot.
SRFC Members Club
The SRFC Members is a fund where supporters donate a fixed amount of money each month to help progress the club. The monthly amount is about €40. The members played a crucial part in Rovers' recent progress through Examinership. SRFC has a Board of Directors known as Trustee. The Board is elected once a year. Each person who donates has one vote in relation to this Board. At the 2006 AGM of the 400 Club there was a vote to rename the club as the SRFC Members Club.

  • Rovers 1 - 0 Bray

    Tolka Park, Friday 1 June 2007, 8pm.

This wasn't the best performance by the Hoops but a tough and successful three games in seven days took its toll on the players. Bray arrived in Tolka Park on the back of two wins also and took the game to the Hoops in the early stages with Tresson smashing a fine shot off the crossbar after only 7 minutes. Dave O'Connor then raided down the left just two minutes later and he found Purcell inside the area but the shot was blasted over the bar.

This was a tough physical battle and Dan O'Connor picked up an early booking. Ger Rowe was quick to spot Cassidy from a free-kick on 16 minutes and the Hoops number seven crossed for Purcell but he just failed to make contact. The Wanderers breached the Hoops defence on 19 minutes but the shot hit the side netting from a tight angle.

Rovers were finding it difficult to create any openings and it was the visitors that went close again on 38 minutes with a glancing header from a cross.

Bray almost grabbed the lead just five minutes into the second half. Barry Murphy again showed how good a 'keeper he is blocking a close range effort with the follow up shot going narrowly wide. Aiden Price had to go off injured after only 54 minutes to be replaced by Tommy Barrett. Pat Scully showed the Hoops intent on winning the game by pushing three men up front on the hour when sending on Andy Myler.

In the 72nd minute Ger O'Brien forced a corner from which Cassidy played a short ball to Rowe who turned and crossed deep for Ferguson to head. The ball struck Delaney on the arm and amid calls for a penalty the ball fell nicely for Purcell and he turned to shoot past Williams from close range. There was huge relief in the ground but from the kick-off Bray raided down the right and a low cross was well defended by Ferguson almost on his own line.

A Cassidy free-kick on 82 minutes was met by the diving Purcell but his header went just wide. Bray pushed on looking for an equaliser but apart from a couple of scrambles in the box the Hoops defence stood firm. Not a great performance by the Hoops but the three points gained capped a memorable week for Pat Scullys men.

  • Drogheda 0 - 2 Rovers

    United Park, Friday 25 May 2007, 7.45pm

A superb win for the Hoops against title chasing Drogheda in United Park with Tadhg Purcell in fine form in front of goal. On a fairly calm evening the game started brightly with Robinson diving to meet a header that Murphy gathered on 6 minutes and Danny O'Connor at the other end just failing to meet an O'Brien free-kick. Gartland then went close for the home side on 12 minutes but he just failed to connect with a cross to the back post.

A Purcell header to Rowe on 16 minutes caused confusion in the Drogs defence and Dave O'Connor forced Vilmunen to push the ball away. Aiden Price was then called upon to clear a dangerous inswinging free-kick on 19 minutes as Drogheda looked for an opening goal. Murphy had to be quick off his line just three minutes later to deny Stuart Byrne.

A Cahill cross in the 27th minute saw Byrnes back header go just wide and 5 minutes later Danny O'Connor was on hand to block a Cahill shot from the edge of the box. The game became scrappy for five or six minutes but it was the Hoops that struck the first blow.

On 38 minutes some fine work from Rowe on the right saw his cross met perfectly by Purcell to volley the ball past Vilmunen. It was a fine strike by the Hoops number nine and it stung the home side into action but the Rovers defence soaked up the pressure.

The second half was only five minutes old when Ferguson conceded a soft free-kick at the edge of the area. Bradley struck the kick on goal but Murphy made a tremendous save to push the ball against the post. Drogheda were then reduced to 10 men when Gartland was shown a straight red card by Referee Stokes for an elbow on Purcell on 57 minutes.

Murphy saved a low shot from Byrne before the home side were hit with a sucker punch in the 64th minute when Rowe again found Purcell in the box and this time he volleyed the ball past Vilmunen while falling backwards. Just 4 minutes later a Cassidy cross found Rowe but he couldnt keep his shot on target. Rowe then made space for himself at the edge of the area but fired his shot just over.

The home side hit back and Zayed bore down on goal in the 71st minute but Murphy saved with his legs. A minute later Zayed again found himself free in the box but again Murphy advanced to block his goal bound effort. Rovers had to work hard for the remainder of the game but Drogheda never looked like breaching the Hoops defence despite their efforts.

  • Rovers 1 - 1 Waterford - game abandoned

    Tolka Park, Friday 18 May 2007, 8pm.

On an extremely windy night in Tolka Park the Referee was forced to abandon the game after 52 minutes after his attention was drawn to a floodlight pylon that was swaying dangerously. While the decision was met with extreme disappointment initially there can be no doubts that the Ref. acted in the interest of safety.

The Hoops were shocked after only 4 minutes when Sullivan stole in behind the Hoops defence after a free-kick had been initially cleared to knock the ball past a helpless Murphy. There was strong calls for offside the linesman kept his flag down. The bad weather conditions didn't help the game and Rovers struggled to create chances. However a corner in the 32nd minute was met at the back post by Danny O'Connor and his looping header to the far post saw keeper Delaney and a defender get in each others way and the ball nestled in the net.

After the game both managers agreed during Radio interviews that the Ref. had no choice but to call off the game. Pat Scully thanked the Ref. for ending what he described as a dreadful performance by the Hoops. He also refused to blame the weather for the display.

    Shamrock Rovers Press Release

An Open Letter to Michael O'Leary
    Press Release Issued : 18 Dec 2008
An Open Letter to Michael O'Leary
    18/12/2008

    Dear Michael

We sincerely hope you are more up to date on matters at Aer Lingus in particular and the airline industry in general than you are about Shamrock Rovers.

You've probably been so busy working all these years that you hadn't noticed the six championships, four FAI Cups and three doubles we've won since the 1980s.

Still Ireland's most successful football club, the Hoops are no longer homeless as we'll be playing in the spanking new Tallaght Stadium from next season. You can't miss the place – it's across from the Square, right in the centre of Tallaght, and just off the M50.

And we're offering great deals on seats. Season tickets for our home games for the entire 2009 campaign start at just €200. Return Ryanair flights to Manchester United's next home game would cost a lot more!

    Anyway, thanks for the thought.
