- Remember, the best way to avoid any panic about skin cancer is to stay safe this summer and respect the sun and your skin. Check out Shunburn's sun safety symbols to avoid worrying about sunburn whilst you could be enjoying those hot lazy days with your mates. Skin cancer, caused by damage from UV (ultraviolet) rays in sunlight, is one of the most common cancers in the UK and the number of people who get it is increasing. You can take steps to prevent it by protecting yourself in the sun.
-Cover up with a t-shirt
-Wear a wide-brim hat
-Stay out of the sun between 11 and 3
-Pop on a pair of sunglasses
Apply generous amounts of suncream to clean, dry skin and rub it in only lightly. You should reapply suncream at regular intervals throughout the day, at least every two hours. Always reapply after swimming or if the suncream is washed, rubbed or sweated off.
Never wear sun cream with an SPF lower than 15, wherever you go on holiday.
