  • Morocco

    Morocco, Morocco, Morocco. What can I say about Morocco? Every morning at 5 or so we are woken without a choice to the prayer call. Which starts out like a bomb warning siren and ends up like a crazed Nazi rally speaker. This continues throughout the day but after 2 weeks it has blended into the background. Except that fecking 5am one...I'm managing to get by with a little help from my friends the earplugs.



    Then there are the tourist touts. You can't walk past a cafe or shop without a menu and/or man in your face. You can't look at a map or ask for directions without someone appointing themselves as your guide and insisting on showing you the way and then further insisting you pay them for it. "Meet my medium son. i have 3 more at home so give me money", or telling you to stay in this hotel, or eat in this restaurant, because the one you were going to stay in, or eat at, is closed (and we ate there this morning...). Oh the lies!



    But aside from the agendad (think I just made up that word) liars, it's brilliant here! We're having an amazing time! It's food heaven for all you food porn lovers, and super cheap food at that. For example, a kilo of mandarines is 20 cent! Craziness! It's also really beautiful, especally the town Chefchaoeun where we stayed for nearly a week. The whole town is painted blue, apparently to keep the flies at bay. It's surrounded by the Rif mountains, one of which we climbed. We set off with two other guys we met there thinking we were in for a nice gradual uphill stroll. More like almost-vertical-climbing on loose rocks....in battered Converse, the least grippy of all runners. It was all quite idiotic really, but in retrospect it was a fun 6 hours of near death experience, despite the aftermath of muscle agony.



    We have hardly drank since we got here (bar the celebrating-to-be-alive drinks we had after the day of the mountain). It's quite expensive and frowned upon and hard to find because of the lack of bars. It's strange though because nobody passes any notice of smoking hash, it's more acceptable than alcohol for some reason. They're all really shocked when we refuse the hundreds of 'good stuff' offers saying we don't smoke, I think it's a pretty big tourist attraction here.



    We'll be home on the 21st of December, this time for quite a while unfortunately, have to refinance!

  • Oh the countries we've seen!

    Bonjourno everybody!

    We're in Italy now (so i can say "mi scuzi" for real John!! class!), after years of gagging to go to Venice it was everything I expected (with an added dash of rediculous amounts of tourists, but sure you'll have that.), it's just stunning! We must have taken a thousand photos, none of which we can see because my camera screen broke, so we get the old-school excitement of waiting for them to be developed!

    Right, so the last time I wrote we were in Belgium. Since then, we've covered a crazy amount of countries (nearly half of Europe now, I'd say that's quite the achievement!) : Luxembourg (teeny!), Germany (very neat! and cheap beer courtesy of my friend who I met in Australia), Poland (coldness! and then there was Auschwitz...needless to say we won't be forgetting that in a hurry, a very disturbing experience), Czech Republic (Prague-ness), Austria (Vienna-ness),Slovakia (turns out the girls aren't that hot as it says in our book, they were hotter in Croatia), Hungary (where Cein nearly broke his ankle while eh, passing gas!), Croatia (where we stayed with a guy called Gorilla! The least touristy place so far, a nice change!), Slovenia (Ljubljana...try to pronounce that!) and finally the beautiful Italia!
    We didn't think we'd make it here so we're very excited, heading to Rome soon! After that we're going to the even-teenier-than-Luxembourg country of Lichtenstein and then Switzerland to London, and London to home on the 20th.

    So we'll be home for a couple of weeks then if anyone wants to meet up for a pint or 7 (but keep in mind we're nearly poor at this stage, hence the plan on spending November and December in the cheaper (and warmer thank bejesus) land of north Africa!

  • Leg 2

    hello everyone!
    so the last time i wrote we had accidentally landed in the chavland of Salou in Spain. after that we headed for Valencia (beautiful city and the highlight of Spain so far), then to Alicante (where they had this class burning of huge floats festival, and after putting out the fires the fire brigade turned their hoses on us... classness!) where we almost liquidated due to the outrageous heat, then to Madrid where we bummed at Adrien's house for a week (thanks Adrien!) and finally to Santander that saw to the first drops of rain in 2 months. Boo.

    Next came an overnight ferry (which i had romantic notions about but it ended up being very boring and long and our reclining chairs that we had to sleep in didn't recline, so we slept on the floor...basically not very romantic at all) back to the UK, a couple of night's stay in London and then home for 2 weeks.
    it was great to be at home and catch up with everyone, I missed home more this time more than before (which is strange considering I brought a piece of it with me!). Cein's mum's 50th party was a mad night, the whole 2 weeks were fairly mad actually, i think i spent more there than i did the 3 months travelling! but i got tax back so it was okay (being a teacher is officially the best job in the world! well....maybe not but getting paid for days i didn't work is pretty sweet!)

    so now we're on leg 2 of the trip! started in London again, then on to the bizarre mad house that is Amsterdam. what can i say about amsterdam...it was everything you'd expect and more, with an added dollop of crazy! then we went to the Hague and Rotterdam where it rained and rained and couldn't compare to the Dam, but was still good to see.

    after the Netherlands we came south to Belgium which has really taken us by surprise. this dark horse of a country is fantastic and has now topped our list of best country so far. Gent and Bruges were the highlights (we saw 'In Bruges' in Bruges! wooh)- they're like something out of a modern day fairy tale (to steal a quote)- amazing medieval architecture, great atmosphere and everyone is so friendly and quirky. seriously, every street we walked down was like a postcard. we'd definitely recommend Flanders for anyone thinking of taking a wee trip.

    we've been doing a bit of couch surfing which is the best idea in the world for people travelling on a budget, and its a great way of meeting locals and getting insider tips. best of all, it's free (spoken like a true Cavan lady).
    so we're in Rocheforet now where we went to see some cool caves and stalactities and all that geographical malarky and tomorrow we're heading to Luxembourg and then onto Germany. i love this wandering slash lazy life!
