Sun 2nd August Pol Mac Adaim, Suffolk Inn!!!
Información
For the first time, the community in West Belfast and beyond were consulted on the name for an apartment block on the Old Suffolk Road. Nestled between Lenadoon and Colin Glen Forest Park, the apartments formerly known as 'San Antone' needed a new name - and residents ran a whole new focused campaign to not only change the behaviour within San Antone - which was once dubbed 'party central', but also to give the building a facelift. We are pleased to announce that after a highly acclaimed and successful relaunch day on August 9th 2008, Frances Black, Lenadoon Forum and Residents officially renamed the apartments 'Gleann Dara'. The name is reflective of growth and strength - something which our residents know all about now!!
Residents Committee
Gleann Dara Residents Committees mission statement is to help ' foster the health and wellbeing of all our residents, to help empower them to affect change for their future positively. We will also develop stronger links within the development and the community as a whole, in order to promote social inclusion, empowerment and community cohesion.
Practical Work to Date
Gleann Dara Residents Committee have been successful at changing the face of the old 'San Antone, through community awareness, clean up days, linking in with Lenadoon Community Forum, voluntary and statutory agencies - and in helping residents with problems through the provision of an out of hours contact number.
Work for the future
Gleann Dara Residents Committee will always look after residents interests according to what they request, whether it be through education, health and wellbeing, signposting to agencies, dealing with complaints, neighbour disputes, empowerment, or any type of support. We will also act as requested as a 'watchdog' for agencies, and the management company, to ensure that our residents get the very best treatment, service and deal that they deserve.
Other Success
Through the formation of The Suffolk Road Residents Network and other residents associations, this is an exciting time for residents who live in the Suffolk Road and Old Suffolk Road. Gleann Dara Residents Assocation link in with the Residents Network in order that our residents have a greater voice when dealing with wider issues on the Suffolk Road Area. We are involved in a number of community campaigns such as traffic calming, planning objections, all aspects of council provision, road resurfacing(a particular problem outside Gleann Dara), children and young people, anti community behaviour and commuity empowerment. The link with Lenadoon Community Forum brought greater service provision into Gleann Dara so that our residents could live in a clean environment. Lenadoon Community Forum have been instrumental in dealing with residents issues also and in suggesting ways in which our residents quality of life can imporve greatly. Through widening out the contact, Gleann Dara is no

  • You Heard it here First!!!! Lenadoon Festival Event Stop Press!!!!

Following on from the hugely successful Gleann Dara Launch last year with Frances Black, The Suffolk Road Residents Network have done it again! As part of Lenadoons Festival Events, headlining in the Suffolk Inn on Sunday 2nd August, Pol Mac Adaim promises to bring the house down with his mixture of folk, revolutionary songs and funny takes on the political situation through music. With a cult following in West Belfast, but now living in Sweden, Pol has agreed to return for this very special gig. . “Theres nothing like the atmosphere in West Belfast, and I specifically wanted to play my first gig home in the Lenadoon Area, because I am aware of the great community spirit and development ongoing in the area, and the work being done by people on the ground to change things.”

Pol has played alongside some of the world's finest pop musicians from bands like Shakespears Sister and Seal as well as enduring musicians in the Folk scene such as Delores Keane, Stockton's Wing, Brush Shiels, Calico, The Wolfetones, The Dublin City Ramblers and Bacaan. He recently shared a bill with Davy Spillane & Kevin Burke, Christy O'Leary & Bert Deivert, Gerry O'Connor and the Moya Brennan band(Clannad). He also appeared in and played in the movie, The Magdalene Sisters. Christy Moore ranked Pol as one of the musicians he listens to for radio show Tine, and his songs about oppression, struggle and revolution strike a chord wherever he goes.

Tickets are £3 to ensure this event is accessible to all, and are available from Lenadoon Community Forum, the Suffolk Inn, or by contacting 07704072744, or suffolkroadresidents@hotmail.com Other local artists will also play on the night. One not to be missed!!!

  • Gleann Dara Wins Award!!!!

Gleann Dara Residents just came joint first out of 71 applications for the mayors special category Award for right accross Belfast, in the Brighter Belfast Environmental Awards :) in the Waterfront Hall - we put the application in 4 weeks ago, a half an hour before the deadline, never expecting to hear anything back BUT -we did!. Alas we didnt win the best hanging basket in Belfast Award, but hey, we did manage to get a Belfast Crystal Trophy, money for environmental improvements in Gleann Dara, and a signed and framed certificate from the man himself :) :) , Mayor Tom Hartley !!!! Ye Ha!!!

We are going to start a full consultation process with our residents and hold a competition for what they think the money could best be put to use for in terms of environmental improvements, (for more infor email gleanndara@hotmail.com). This application recognised the recent work which the residents association have put into the development, and is also a recognition of all of our residents in this development who contribute in some way to trying to keep the place in top form.

The Mayor said that the application won because of the emphasis on building community cohesion, and in the drive to increase community links, particularly with the residents network and the link there and that this had been the reason we were selected, because in terms of community building, helping to bring people on board to take pride in the area in which they live was for the council the key. He said that by creating the community link from people outside the development we had helped turn the place around by word of mouth from a place which was once associated with anti-social behaviour, to a really positive image - with no reports of anti social behaviour recently. He also mentioned our Bebo page haha! :) :) :)

Fair play to the residents, if it hadnt been for everyones hard work we wouldnt have got there, and also to Paddy O Donnell from Lenadoon Community Forum who encouraged us to put in for the application in the first place!

A Poll will also be set up on this Bebo page to encourage residents to not only vote on suggestions already received for environmental improvements, but also for them to leave their suggestions and comments also along with the poll. Suggestions can also be left to block reps, and also emailed to gleanndara@hotmail.com before the 5th December 2008. Prize money will be given for the most innovative answer - entries for prizemoney restricted to residents only.

If you's r looking a stage, why not contact Feile An Phobail? Seeing as it's the end of festival week, i'm sure there will be a few knocking about that wont be used that day. I won't be at the relaunch, i'll be partying my ass off at a wedding. Such a shame, I would have enjoyed it.

I would suggest Gleann Dónal or Gleann Abhainn as a more suitable name instead of "San Antone" which reminds the residents of West Belfast of Gran Canaria or sumwhere like that where people do destroy the reputation of the area. I agree that the residents on the suffolk road should have their own say, but make sure if you are using the Irish language in the name be careful that its spelt and pronounced correctly!!!

Abair Slán leis an t-ainm seo agus bíodh bród agaibh as an áit atá sibh i bhur gcónaí!!!!!

    Ádh mór oraibh uilig!!!!!!!

The name suggestion about Joe McDonnell is a very good one. He gave his life for this community and Ireland.
