  First journal entry... ever. July 21st, 2008. B.P.R.D. HQ.
  
  Things I've learned since joining the secret government organization called the B.P.R.D.: televisions discharge a painful electronic charge when damaged, there's really no way to turn off a shower once you've destroyed both knobs and part of the showerhead, wood breaks very easily, and I don't like nachos.
  
  It hasn't been all bad, though. I learned that an x-ray machine lets you see your insides and that you don't have to get shots for diseases if they can't find a needle that can penetrate your skin. I really, really didn't like the idea of shots.
  
  I haven't gone on a mission yet, I'm still settling in, but I've met some of Big Red's -- that is, agent codenamed Hellboy's -- friends: his cats and a fish-man called Abe Sapien. He lives in a tank in a gigantic library.
  
  The library, as it turns out, is my favorite place in the whole base, at least as far as I've been able to explore. Everywhere else, except my living quarters, is either too noisy, too bright, or both. I know there's plenty of people here just doing there jobs, but I prefer peace and quiet.
  
  And my living quarters are too small and, past that huge titanium door, feel too much like a prison cell. I know Big Red and the rest of them mean best, but I was a captive for most of my life so anything that even remotely resembles captivity is a bit iffy for me... and besides, the large library has a tank in it.
  
  Although I still shy away from going into bodies of water (after what happened in the pool with Jubilee that one time...), I can't help but feel there's something peaceful about how quiet and simple water is. It's the same reason I'd been attracted to the fountain at Xavier's mansion. I wonder if the other mutant children are still okay... maybe I'll visit them sometime.
  
  I've long since broken the holographic emitter with forcefields that Alastor made for me, but here they've come up with a voice-activated device that can erect very thin, invisible forcefields around my hair, fingers, and toes so I'll be able to pick things up, sleep in a bed, press buttons, and walk around without destroying the things in my new living quarters (they're making repairs on the old ones...).
  
  The device is hidden under my black bandages. There's an emitter around my neck (for my hair), on each of my wrists (for my fingers), and on each of my ankles (for my toes). The downside of all this technology, of course, is that the forcefields block my skin so I can't feel whatever I'm touching. But it's an acceptable tradeoff for being able to pick up things like food. I'm learning how to use things like forks and pencils (hence this journal entry).
  
  I already knew how to speak and write (and have decided to keep a journal) because of having Monet's memories inside me, but that's the subject for another journal entry. I suppose, now that I can touch things without shredding them, I could actually wear real clothes now, but... I don't know how long this B.P.R.D. thing is going to last. I've been disappointed so many times that I'm cynical about the possibility of having a new home in the long term.
  
  I can tell you, however, that it already feels like more of a home than Xavier's mansion ever did, despite the fact that Headmistress Emma Frost was there... she just has so many more students now that I think she's using them as an excuse to avoid me. She probably doesn't want to think about all the people close to us that we've both lost... and I probably remind her of that.
  
  So, like I said, I've met Abe and can watch TV now (which isn't very interesting to me); hopefully I'll meet more of Big Red's friends -- and start to earn my keep -- soon.

• To Rob A Bank In Gotham... Or Not?

  ((Open only to characters normally found in Gotham City and myself, thanks... all others' Comments will be ignored by me. Gotham people can join at any time.))
  
  Narrator: Gotham National Bank. A fortress in a city that needs one. There is no way anyone...
  
  Penance burrows her way underground across the street from the bank and, from there, travels underground until she has counted out exactly where the bank should be. Burrowing upward, she arrives somewhere within the main part of the bank, where all the tellers would be, if the bank weren't closed.
  
  Narrator: ...okay, sure, but there's no way she's getting into the--
  
  Penance sprints towards the back of the bank, towards the gigantic vault, where her horrific, large claws will easily slice through steel or titanium or whatever they're using to keep money safe these days.
  
  Narrator: Err, somebody call Batman?

• Where is my home? Where is my family?

  Shy one, Shy one,
  Shy one of my heart,
  She moves in the firelight

  The words of Irish poet W.B. Yeats. You could say, for much of my early life, I was the shy one. Well, I guess I still am; old habits are hard to break and it's difficult to be confident when everything and everyone you loved has been ripped away.
  
  For many years, I couldn't bring myself to be with others, not even other mutant kids like myself. I had been captured by a mutagenic vampire (he "sups" on mutant bone marrow to live) called Emplate, a mutant from Algeria named Marius St. Croix.
  
  Sometime later, he imprisoned his sister, Monet St. Croix, inside my body using dark magics, as "penance" for her arrogant and condescending refusal to join him in his evil plans.
  
  I don't know why, perhaps I'm just traumatized, but I don't remember my life before Emplate. My earliest memories are of being kept in the dark, unable to move because I was strung up by a myriad of black restraints and silver buckles wrapped around my body and strapped to the wall. I couldn't speak -- I would move my mouth and no sound would come out. It didn't even occur to me that sound SHOULD come out until I heard HIS voice...
  
  His ... terrifying voice. And then he would come for me, time and again, stretching out his hand and putting it on my head. The pain was unimaginable as he supped on the marrow of my bones time and time again. I felt so weak, unable to struggle, unable to scream.
  
  Eventually, I gave up on ever getting away. Emplate had my loyalty; I was his and his alone. He was my master and I, the slave. He knew that, which is why I suppose he was so upset -- perhaps even hurt -- by the fact that, when I was able to break free of his mind control, I betrayed him, choosing to attack him and help free Generation X from him. But I'm getting ahead of myself.
  
  Monet was there too, after Emplate put her in my body. She was there in the darkness, unable to move, after willingly following him through the dimensional portal in the hopes that he would turn her back into her normal self. She didn't handle the pain and terror and imprisonment as well as I did -- by the time she came along, I was almost used to it... but because she was inside of me, I had to experience that terror anew, all over again.
  
  Not that it really made matters much worse, all things considered, but because of her, I became an observer in my own body -- she was in control of everything, right down to blinking my eyes. I suppose the one good thing was that, through her memories, I learned to understand English, and French, and about the world around me.
  
  Of course, over time, through Emplate's torture, our knowledge and memories faded; I suppose Monet just couldn't handle knowing that she'd never be like she was, so she blocked it all out, all her memories. It's hard for me to say, now, what we knew and didn't know by the time we were rescued. It's hard to go back to that time...
  
  One night, as we slept, our head full of nightmares no worse than our waking days, a man named Gateway came to rescue us. At least, that's what we later found out; as for what actually happened, we just woke up one stormy night, no longer strung up like so much meat in a butcher's shop. No longer in Emplate's dark domain...
  
  We were free! And we were determined to do anything to stay free. Anything. Can you blame us? We had endured years of pain, torture, and helplessness... We almost seriously injured some good people to stay free, but thanks to someone called Jonothan Starsmore, we decided to give trust a try. We could feel that he was like us, tortured and alone, cursed because of the way he was born. We didn't want to be alone in our pain any longer... so we followed him back to the place he called school.
  
  Trust must be one of the hardest things in the world. It was weeks, maybe even months, before I -- I mean, we, began to trust the mutant group known as Generation X. We were curious about everyth
