Just my thoughts ...

Barack Obama winning the US Presidential election may not mean much to some but for me, it's an incredible milestone and turning point in the history of the world. The first African-American President of the United States! Do we really understand the huge significance of this? I don't think so. It is the stuff that legends are made of and if you listen to Obama’s victory speech, you'll recognise a number of references to points previously made by other great American legends such as Martin Luther King Jr. and John F. Kennedy.

This is a real coming of age for America (and the rest of the world) when an African-American man can rise above to transcend age, gender and race in a population of over 300 million to become the most powerful political leader in the free world. Who would've thought it possible in our day and age? I didn’t think it was possible in my lifetime so it just goes to show you, doesn’t it?

Only in America? I’m not so sure. Imagine an Indigenous Prime Minister of Australia and you might have an inkling of what I'm talking about. If you look at what’s happened in the US as well as what’s already happened here in Australia then maybe we’re not really that far off from something similar. I mean we already have a number of Indigenous Ministers, one of which is no less than the Deputy Chief Minister of the NT - that's really only two steps away from being the Prime Minister so there definitely is hope for the future.

Can the son of a goat herder rise above to become the most powerful political leader in the free world? Yes he can.

Can a young Aboriginal boy from Arnhem Land rise above to become one of the most recognisable faces in Australian film? Yes he can.

Can a young Tiwi girl, rise above to become the Deputy Chief Ministerof the NT? Yes she can.

Can an Aboriginal man, blind from birth rise above to sing the stories of his country in his own tongue and win the hearts of non-Aboriginal people around the world? Yes he can.

Can a young Darwin girl with the voice of an angel rise above to win the hearts of a nation and go on to record with the biggest international artists in the industry? Yes she can.

Can we believe in the hope of a better day? YES WE CAN! Change has come to America, we will be next. It’s all out there, waiting to happen …

A seven year old boy was at the centre of a courtroom drama yesterday when he challenged a court ruling over who should have custody of him.

The boy has a history of being beaten by his parents and the judge initially awarded custody to his aunt, in keeping with the child custody law and regulations requiring that family unity be maintained to the degree possible.

The boy surprised the court when he proclaimed that his aunt beat him more than his parents and he adamantly refused to live with her.

When the judge suggested that he live with his grandparents, the boy cried out that they also beat him.

After considering the remainder of the immediate family and learning that domestic violence was apparently a way of life among them, the judge took the unprecedented step of allowing the boy to propose who should have custody of him.

After two recesses to check legal references and confer with child welfare officials, the judge granted temporary custody to the QUEENSLAND state of origin team, whom the boy firmly believes are not capable of beating anyone.
