Cabbala is a word signifying a verbal tradition or secret religious law and translates literally from Hebrew as “from mouth to ear”. According to cabbalistic tradition God created the universal schema through spoken utterances and commands. The ten spheres on the tree of life are the divine Sepheroth or more properly Sepheroth Bilema “Voices from nothing which symbolically represent the 10 fold aspect of creation. The decimal unit was taken by the originators of the Cabbala who saw in the number 10 a measure of perfection to represent the trinity of the God head working through the seven ages of creation. The Hebrew letters Yod, Heh & Vav are the letters of the name Yehova which compose this pre Christian trinity. The number 3 has always been linked to the concept of the God head mainly due to its links to the concept of eternity.

The creators three fold aspect is: “He that has always existed”, “He that exists” and “He that shall endure forever”. The idea of an infinite and immortal God who reveals itself in a universe fashioned from the substance of its own being presents a paradox. The Cabbalist is human and therefore limited by his own mortality. He finds himself having to deal with the problem of having to relate to an immortal creator, dealing with his creation and also the paradox of it, his own place in eternity as a being limited within a four dimensional perceptual frame reference. As a starting point and according to the tradition this may take several life times to master.
The Cabbala attempts to arrive at an understanding of one single aspect of the creator through the study of numerology and meditation upon the sacred hieroglyphs of the Hebrew alphabet. Because the system of the cabbala represents the exoteric side of the Judaic religious law it contains many keys which unlock texts contained within the Old Testament. In the Hebrew tongue letters of the alphabet stand double duty as numbers for example the letter aleph may also be written for the character representing the number one. The letter beth may be written for the character representing number two. Every word and phrase therefore has a numerological value. The Hebrew phrase “Yehovah Eckhart” “the eternal reveals himself through unity” adds to the number 39. There are 39 separate works in the canonical Old Testament also the number of Hebrew letters in the titles of the 10 Seperoth total 39 in all, thus can the cabbalistic significance of the phrase Yehovah Eckhart begin to be realised. Other codes contained in the text of the Old Testament include a series of 3 verses which run concurrently in the book of Exodus each comprised of 72 letters when viewed in the original Hebrew these are Exodus 14 vs. 19, 20 & 21. If these verses are set out each in a straight line reading from right to left in the normal Semitic practice one above the other with the middle verse reversed vs. 20 so that it reads from left to right then 72 tri lateral columns of angelic names are formed.

This list of names constitutes the hierarchy of powers known as the angels of the Shem Hamephorash, the divided name. All of this will be studied by the advanced cabbalist but he beginner will have to begin from basics such as the Hebrew alphabet and the Sepheroth.

The exact date of the origin of the esoteric system known as the cabbala is a scholarly mystery. Ancient tradition recants that the secret doctrine enshrined in cabbalistic lore was communicated directly to Adam by the Archangel Ratsiel who then passed it on to successive generations by word of mouth. By a similar method Cabbala has survived the millennium and has only in recent times been committed to writing in a somewhat incomplete format for it always has been an oral tradition surviving exclusively in the Rabbinical chaste.
