SPINBALL WHIZZER
Have you ever wondered what it might be like to be a human pinball?? Imagine a rollercoaster ride where you are not only hurtling full pelt along steep, twisting tracks, but the car you are travelling in is also freely spinning! Spinball Whizzer is truly a unique ride experience! Riders rattle like a ball as they are catapulted down the 470m track at speeds of up to 60km per hour. Over the 90 second duration of the ride! "Spinball Whizzer" has been manufactured by the German company Maurer; it is a custom designed spinning coaster. The cars spin around depending on the weight and the number of people, so you get a different experience every ride. Full of surprises, Spinball Whizzer is a mad ride that all the family can enjoy together. (A height restriction of 1.2 metres applies.)
RITA
It was September 20th 2004 and something strange was happening to Ug Land, fences going up, rides and theming took apart, what was happening? Over the coming months and after much speculation it became clear Ug Land was home to a brand new Intamin rocket coaster to be called Rita - Queen Of Speed! This European first is Alton Towers first Launched coaster since the Thunderlooper was removed back in 1997. Rita launches you from 0 to 100 kph in 2.5 seconds from the station pulling 4.7g's straight into a banked turn and then around Ug land via air time hills and steep turns. Rita, the wild, fast, sexy lady, takes part in the Thunder Rock Rally around Ug land and much of the old Ug Land theme still remains adding that pre historic twist to Rita's theme. Rita is a fantastic addition to Alton Towers line up of coasters and a must do if you like speed and high thrills! Dare you ride Rita?!
CORKSCREW
The Corkscrew was installed in 1980 by John Broome, at the time it was Alton Towers biggest ride and Europe’s first double 'corkscrew coaster'. For years it sat un-themed in Festival Park, until Ug Land opened in 1999. When it was re-themed, not much was done to the ride, the cars were painted, the queue was diverted and the surroundings were re-themed. In 2005 and because of Rita - Queen Of Speed opening right next to it, Corkscrew had a new paint job, still yellow! and the queue lines were yet again moved and now intertwine with Rita's. The new entrance to Corkscrew is now down the far end of Ug Land. The ride starts with a slow climbing lift hill, this is painted green for camouflage issues. Once at the top the red carriages turn around 180 degrees in a small dip. After another drop and turn the carriages are put through 2 corkscrews in a row, turning riders upside down twice. OBLIVION
It was the last day of the 1996 season and something was happening in Fantasy World, the Pirate Ship and AstroDancer were closed and ready to be moved. It came to the start of the 1997 season, Fantasy Land was empty with only the Black hole remaining, a huge fence surrounded the existing ride area, with a sign saying; WORLD FIRST RIDE OPENS MARCH 1998. Nobody knew what the new ride would be, just a large building site with an ever growing hole. Every visit to the park saw this huge hole grow bigger and bigger. As parts of the track arrived on site suspicions grew of what 'Secret Weapon 4' would be. March 1998 arrived and it was finally revealed OBLIVION: the worlds first vertical drop roller coaster. Press coverage was amazing it was on the news, advertised on packets of Cornflakes and it was even featured on Blue Peter. THE FLUME
Once the longest Flume ride in the world, this ride was originally themed around the Canadian flumes or water chutes that are used to transport logs from forest to riverside. There is nearly 1 kilometre of waterway winding through woodlands. There are three drops on the ride; the first is a large lift hill, but a small drop, to gain some height. The second drop is in a tunnel and the final drop is the one that really gets you wet! In 2004 the ride received a much needed re-theme. The flume was given some much needed maintenance with new lining! Bath time with attitude theming was added and the log boats were replaced with funky bath tubs! Rubber ducks, taps, bath plugs and of course showers feature heavily in the theming around the ride, and if the final drop doesn’t get you wet enough, there’s an intermittent power shower that just might give you a total soaking!
AIR
Air is the brain child of the designer John Wardley; he wanted to allow people to experience true flight and though he knew it would not be an easy task, many years later and after hours of planning, meetings and testing Air was finally born, a ride which actually put riders into the prone position and let them fly through the sky. After the Beast was removed from Alton Towers in 1997 it would only be a matter of years before another attraction was placed on the site. In 2000 permission was granted for a new roller coaster and throughout 2001 the site was prepared and steel was erected. The ride is manufactured by Swiss company B&M, who also produced the famous Nemesis and Oblivion. Other companies such as Consign worked on the computer systems and the Tussauds studio worked on the clever theming, which is very different to the rest of the area. NEMESIS
Alton Towers bill Nemesis as ''the ultimate thrill ride'', the ride certainly lives up to this statement. Nemesis is based around a legend thought up by the Tussauds marketing department, a monster which was disturbed during routine maintenance work has created a large whole in the Staffordshire landscape. The monster had to be pinned down with hundreds of tonnes of steel and that's how Nemesis came about. It is partly due to the marvellous theming and storyline which make Nemesis so different to other roller coasters throughout the world, another dimension has been added to the ride by setting it deep in the ground and making the ride twist around the station, themed as the monster. Because the ride is hidden in a valley the first time you see the ride properly is when you are about to join the queue, the anticipation of walking towards the ride is immense, for first time riders you really don't know what to expect when you turn the corner.
