- helping women live positively with AIDs
- Información
- Nakuru is a town in north western Kenya. In the district of Nakuru 150,000 people are infected with HIV/AIDs, distressingly most of these men, women and children live in absolute poverty. This combination of the HIV/AIDs epidemic and extreme malnutrition have created a record low life expectancy in Nakuru of only 44 years.
The Nakuru women’s red ribbon project was started with the aim of empowering women to live positively with HIV/AIDs. Many of these women have either been abandoned or widowed by their husbands, and have been left to support their children and in some cases dependent relatives. Thus, they were forced into a life of begging and prostitution, making them at high risk for contracting HIV/AIDs.
- What does the project do?
- This project gives HIV/AIDs positive women in the Nakuru area a chance to free themselves from the dangerous and degrading life of a prostitute. Instead through joining the project they learn the valuable skills of bead work and jewelery making, through the financial rewards of this they earn a living to support themselves and their families.
- What is particularly remarkable about the project?
- By coming together to make jewellery the women have formed a support group for each other, learning from one another's experiences of life with HIV/AIDs and encouraging their fellow women to 'live positively with AIDs'.
- What does the project do for the community?
- By selling their jewellery and accessories in the local markets the Nakuru Women's group increase awareness of the dangers of HIV/AIDs. They spread a positive message to other women of courage and strength, and are always encouraging and welcoming other women to join.
- Where can I buy some jewellery?
- Nakuru Women's Project products are currently being sold in Andina on Castle St. Cork. We'll be at the Alternative Craft Fair in the Unitarian Church on Princes st. on sat the 3rd of May! Or by private request, please email nakuru_project@live.ie
- Whats next for the Project?

News!
hey everyone,
Thank-you so much to everyone who has supported the project this far. All of your support, advice and purchases!! have been greatly appreciated! The ladies of the Nakuru group are currently designing and creating a beautiful new lot of stock using the profits made from the craft markets, this will be sent out to be sold in Ireland, so we are greatly looking forward to seeing that!! Things will be quiet for a little while, unfortunately we weren't able to get a stall at the marathon market this weekend
But the next Alternative Craft market in the old unitarian church will be on the 12th of July. After that we have confirmed a stall at the MANTUA FESTIVAL in Roscommon from the 1st to the 3rd of August!!! so can't wait for that!
asante sana!
