  • And then there were 3....

Not sure how long or short this will be as it kinda depends on the demands of my little avocado Charlie. She has had a good feed but, like her Mum, likes to go back for seconds.

I have had a fair few emails asking what the hell happened? Did I get induced? Did I have a caesarean etc etc so thought I best outline the goings on of the last 10 days...

So, we moved into our new house on the Tuesday and I spent the Wed (due date) and Thurs unpacking, pottering around etc. Come the Friday, Rich and I went out for dinner and came across a band playing in a pub nearby. I decided to have my weekly quota of 2 units in the one night so felt pished on 2 glasses of vino. As a result, I turned to Rich and said 'this wean isnt coming till next week for sure, lets just stay out later and watch the band.' Sods law dictated that we returned home at 12pm and my waters broke at 1am. No sleeps for Wallace it seems...

I called the hospital and they said wait half an hour and call us back to confirm if it is actually your waters that have broken. So, not knowing what to do with myself, I start to do the obvious and paint my toenails?!? Dont know if it was just showing off to myself that I could actually still paint them or what, but anyways, I trundled off to the hossie sporting lovely french manicured toenails at 2am in the morning, happy as larry.

They left me on a ward overnight to see if my contractions started naturally although by the morning there was still no sign of them. I opted to get induced as I hadnt slept all night and just wanted to get on with it whilst I was still naively pumped and ready for action. I was induced at 10.30 am and gave birth to Charlie at 11.10pm so just over 12 hours which isnt too bad for a first labour by all accounts.

Labour was as one would expect...labourious, hard work, tiring etc but, and I realise it is a cliche, you do totally forget all about the pain the moment the baby is born. I gave birth naturally so no scary op's etc and I was too far gone to get drugs by the time I was demanding them. Apparently at about 10.50pm I started shouting 'Game over, I've had enough, I am going home'. I was battering the laughing gas however so think I thought I could just stand up and trot off home. I am glad I didnt as having Charlie is the most amazing thing that has ever happened to Rich or I. Richard was amazing throughout the birth although think he found it difficult to watch me going through the pain knowing there was nothing he could do but lend a supportive word or arm to grip and break. I think he will remember the horrors of the birth far longer than I will! She was 7 pounds 14 and 52.5 cm in length. Can someone please tell me how long that is in inches. Over here they tell you everything in kilos and cms which is frustrating for a sleep deprived mother who cant work it out.

Unfortunatley when Charlie was born, she didnt take to the boob as well as some babies (much to her fathers horror) so wasnt getting enough food to flush out all the badness in her wee body. Also whilst they say breastfeeding is natural, it isnt a natural skill and we both had to learn how to do it properly. The upshot of it all was that she got jaundice and had to get photo therapy treatment. I cried lots when she went into the incubator as by that point I hadnt slept for 4 days and couldnt get any sleep. This wasnt really due to Charlie, more to do with the hospital and the noises within-crying babies, crying Mums, bright lights, midwifes talking etc. By the time I left hospital on day 5, I had had 4 hours sleep all week. Needless to say I was a bit worn and had a wee tear when I arrived home. Was so good to finally spend time as a family.

So far all is good. We are getting used to Charlie and her needs which basically consist of 'FEEDMEBURPMECHANGEMEFEEDMEFEEDMEF
EEDME'. Rich sometimes feels left out that he doesnt have boobs but he does his bit by burping her and putting her down so they are definately forming a b

  • Monday 27th!

Just thought I would say a wee cheerio from my current house before the move. I 'hope' I will get the comp all set up before the baby arrives but just incase you dont hear from me for a day or two, it doesnt mean I am in labour! Today I am just packing up some final bits n bobs, changing address for bills etc...all the exciting stuff!

Rich and the boys are moving everything on Tues so I will just disappear for the day, doing lunch and the likes before being taken to my new home where Rich assures me he will have made the bed up etc etc. I will let him do what he wants before no doubt going in and rearranging everything.

We had a lovely weekend together, enjoying our last few days of doing whatever we want without having to consider another wee person. We are going to the Coast for Xmas with his family and have a house by the beach so the baby will only be a few weeks old before going its first holiday. Lucky thing.

Anyhoo, back to the packing. I am currently perfectly folding plastic bags...do you think 'nesting' has set in by any chance?

  • Week 38...nearly 39! (1 week to go!)

    Howdy peeps,

Just a wee update on life Down Under. So, whats been happening since I last wrote to you?....

Well I have now finished work which feels really odd to be honest. Cant say I am quite missing it yet, but weird waking up in the morning knowing you havent slept in and have only 10mins to get showered and out the house.

As you may have seen from my pics, I had a baby shower a few weeks back. Dont know about you, but I had no idea what a baby shower even was...do I get lots of shower gel? Do babies fall randomly from the sky?(should work on that one actually, would save on the pain of labour...)

Well basically they are huge over here, everybody has one when they fall pregnant with their first child. Friends/ family all meet up, play games, drink chmapers, eat nibbles and then lavish the Mum to be with presents for the baby. How cool is that? I played it down as felt really guilty about 'expecting' people to bring presents but I would be lying if I said I wasnt chuffed to bits with how spoiled we were. As a result it left Rich and I with lots of extra pennies to spend on other things for the baby so it has helped us out no end. We now pretty much have everything we 'think' we need but will see. Dont want to buy too many clothes until I know what it is as its not as much fun getting everything in white.

There's also a couple of pics up from the Melbourne Cup where Rich had a tent for 60 people out at the Racecourse. It was a great day although as the booze was running freely, proved to be a bit tiring as everyone around me fell about steaming and I was on the water. The only bad thing was that with all that free drink and far too much testosterone kicking about, Rich's Dad Terry got punched in the face and naturally, Rich and bro Rob jumped to his defence. Cue the biggest scrap I have seen in a long time! The Davis boys were all cool though and no one was really hurt thankfully. Kinda reminded me of home actually...

Em, what else is new? I handed in my visa application at last so now have a bridging visa until I get my de facto visa. I have to hand in x-rays etc so no can do until after the baby comes. Should all be ok though and dont think they will be kicking me out the country quite yet...

The move is definately going ahead and it has been brought forward a whole 2 days to the 28th Nov (day before I am due) Spending my days just now packing up our stuff. Well to be honest, it has taken me 2 whole days just to try and organise my accessories. Whats that about? I only brought a suitcase over here a year ago and now I have an entire suitcase of bloomin necklaces! It will have to stop when baby arrives so was just planning ahead, pre-buying (or something.)

Rich has also decided to make his rig into the family car. It currently has 2 seats up front for us and all the back is free for his work tools but as of next week, its going in to get new back seats and windows so that Junior is in a safe car and not a bomb like the red rocket. I had my 7th driving lesson today (yes, managed to put it off for ages again but like to do everythign last minute it seems) Today I mastered parking so getting there!

And finally to the baby. Due the 29th Nov but think I am going to be late. I am feeling really good at the moment, more tired than normal and cant walk quite as far or as fast, but on the whole feeling really rather tip-top! As many people are quick to tell me, I will soon 'know all about it' etc when the baby drops and am going into labour. Its amazing how many people want to tell you how traumatic their labour was or how terrible it is!...'I was in labour for 150 hours, no drugs, 100 stitches etc etc)

I really am not scared of the birth and I am letting my naivety and optimism carry me through to the point of no return. It works for me rather nicely and this my dears is the luxury of being pregnant with your first...you have no idea of the trauma to come. Ignorance is bliss I say. Bring it on...
