Venue Policies
- Purchase of a ticket signifies agreement to the following:
- Right to refuse admission is reserved.
-Anyone under the age of 14 must be accompanied by an adult (aged 18 and over)
-Some shows require proof of age/some shows have age restrictions
- Only official merchandise is on sale inside the venue, do not buy outside. This is for your protection so that you will receive goods of proven quality.
- No professional 'type' camaras, video camaras or tape recorders will be allowed in the venue.
- In the event of a cancellation of the event, only the face value of the ticket will be refunded.
- The venue reserves the right to change the bill without prior notification.
- Ticket holders consent to filming and sound recording as members of the audience.
- No pass outs will be issued.
- Tickets are non-refundalbe or transferable.
- Title to the ticket remains with the promoter until payment has been received in full.
- The venue management accepts no responsibility for acts of wilfull endangerment, or injuries caused thereby to yourself or other patrons whilst on our premises.

- Refunds are available for rescheduled dates up until 24 hours befoe the rescheduled show date.

Disabled Provision



We are delighted to announce that the Academy 1 now has a purpose built first floor viewing gallery and bar which can be accessed by our disabled guests. If you are attending a future show at the Academy 1 please telephone 0161 275 2930 to pre register to access this facility.



Academy 2, 3 and Club Academy are currently standing only venues and we do not have purpose built disabled viewing provision. We will however try to accommodate our disabled guests with chairs/raised viewing where possible. We will also attempt to facilitate an appropriate location from where you can fully enjoy the gig. Please be aware that no arrangements can be guaranteed in advance. Please telephone 0161 275 2930 in advance of the show date to inform us of your needs and requirements.

Getting a Gig

Academy 1, 2, 3 and Club Academy are all busy touring venues. We hardly ever book any bands ourselves. We only work with promoters.

Getting Here


Arriving by coach at Manchester Central Coach Station

Leave the bus station on Chorlton Street turn left and walk the short distance up to Portland Street. Turn left onto Portland Street and find the bus stop outside the big insurance building set back from the road. Look out for buses in the 40s and ask the driver for the University. Get off at Dover Street near Holy Name Church or ask the driver when you think you are in the University area. Cross Oxford Road to the Union which is the large, three-storey building with red banners draped outside it.


Arriving by rail

Arriving at Victoria Station:

• Take a cab
• You could catch the link bus to Piccadilly Station and a train to Oxford Road Station

Arriving at Piccadilly Station:

• Take a cab
• Catch another train to Oxford Road Station
• Catch the tram into Piccadilly Gardens and then a bus in the 40s to the Union
• Catch a number 147 Oxford Link bus to Manchester University (operates until 6.45pm)

Arriving at Oxford Road Station:

• Walk out of the station taking steps on right or following the road, turn right onto Oxford Road and walk for ten minutes to the Union
• Find your way to Oxford Road

Manchester Academy is a brand name used by the University of Manchester Students' Union for its four concert venues in Manchester, England, which reside on Oxford Road both within and adjacent to the main Students' Union. building. 'Manchester Academy' was originally the name of the largest of these venues (see picture), but became an umbrella term for both itself and the union's other venues in 2003. It has hosted such big names as Ian Brown, The Stranglers, Super Furry Animals, Deftones, Pink Floyd, The Cure, The Coral, Blur, Oasis, George Clinton, Nirvana, Manic Street Preachers,The Libertines, The Ramones, Billy Talent, Fightstar, Lost Prophets, Babyshambles, Lee "Scratch" Perry, Supergrass, It Bites and Death Cab for Cutie.

The main venue Manchester Academy (sometimes referred to as Academy 1) is just south of the students' union. It opened in October 1990 and was first performed in by the Buzzcocks. It was closed between March and October 2007 when a major refurbishment and rebuilding programme began, set to be complete by early 2008[1]. It had had a capacity of 1500 and hosted about 50 gigs a year prior to closure, though the capacity will be increased when work is completed.

Academy 2 is on the second floor of the Students' Union in the union's Main Debating Hall, which lead to the venue originally being advertised as the 'MDH', though the 'Academy 2' is now used instead.

Academy 3 is on the third floor of the Students' Union. It was formerly known as the 'Hop and Grape' and originally as the 'Solem Bar.'

Club Academy is in the basement of the Students' Union. It was refurbished and opened to the public in September 2005, before which it operated under the title of 'Cellar Disco', and generally only hosted student-only events.

Prior to the construction of what is now their largest venue (and hence the name Manchester Academy) in 1990, the students' union has hosted a wealth of artists including The Yardbirds, The Who, Nazareth (band), The Moody Blues, Stevie Wonder, The Jimi Hendrix Experience, Cream, Captain Beefheart, Pink Floyd, Slade, Fairport Convention, Joe Cocker, Hawkwind, Procul Harum, The Wailers, AC/DC, Dire Straits and The Cure over the last fifty years.[1]

Shows usually start at 7:30pm Monday through Saturday and 7:00pm on Sundays, usually ending at 11 o'clock.

The Manchester Academy one recently underwent a refurbishment program that was scheduled to be completed in Autumn 2007. However, the venue re-opened in January 2008 with much of the refurbishment incomplete. For example, customers have to exit the concert venue and use portable toilets which are located outside of the actual venue and the new balcony area is also not open. It was also noted that no cloakroom is currently available and only one small bar is open (to the right of the stage.) The Manchester University (which runs the venue) has come under much criticism for opening the venue under these conditions.
