- Hey I’m Simon, better known as Scam by my colleagues at glue London where I work as a Digital Designer. I specifically work in interactive video production. That means I work with film, special effects, 3D graphics, developing games, and all sorts of other cool stuff you see online.
Even though I work in what is typically considered a “creative” field, my maths and science background has really helped me with the technical side of my career. If you’re creative, but also like maths and science this is the perfect job for you.

- I like intelligent, moody stuff. I’m a big fan of Warp Records, particularly Boards of Canada and Autechre. At the moment I’m listening to Maximo Park quite a bit, and Band of Horses.
- Films
- It’s a totally obvious one for a designer, but I’d have to say Blade Runner for its beautiful visual treatments and sound design. I’m also a Manga fan – I love Studio Ghibli films like My Neighbour Totoro and Sprited Away.
- Sports
- Not really my cup of tea to be honest. I personally like mountain biking but I’ve never been into watching sports.
- Books
- I don’t read a lot (apart from software manuals!). The last great book I read was “The Time Travellers Wife”.
- Happiest When
- Spending time with my wife and cats
- Hero
- My heroes are the people I work with at glue. Sounds cheesy, but it’s true – they never cease to surprise and inspire me.

FAQ's
What subjects did you study at school?
A Level: Physics, design and technology and art
GCSEs: Three separate sciences, and maths (did it a year early)
What qualifications do you need for your job?
A good design related degree, a quality portfolio and a really great attitude. To be honest the second two are more important than the first.
How much can I earn?
Starting salaries in our industry are good and the rewards are definitely out there for people who want to work hard.
What other careers can Maths and Science lead to?
When I was in school I also considered careers in sound engineering, software programming and product design. I reckon I would have used a fair bit of maths and science in all of those too!
I think there are a lot of jobs in the creative industries where, like mine, the main focus isn’t necessarily mathematic or scientific, but where extra knowledge in those areas can really help you excel and make great work.
What advice can you give someone who wants to do your job?
If you want to enter the digital design industry, you really need to keep on top of creative, visual and technological trends. Get to know the best links sites for seeing other great work from around the world, and check them as often as you can. Also, get to know all the forums and tutorial sites – there’s a big community of designers and developers out there sharing information and it’s great to get involved with it. Hey, I am really interested in computers and design, but I'd really love a career in special affects and CGI or something along those lines.
Do you think I would really need to take art at A level because I'm really bad at drawing, but I like using computers.
Also what do you suggest would be good subjects to take if I am interested in this?
Thanks, Hannah.

Hello, my name is Ollie.
And I am very interested in the whole idea of media, video & audio. I am currently doing my AS levels taking Biology, Art, Media and Business Economics. I am very technically minded, with a creative skill.
So far, I am currently working with websites (flash), and digital art (as well as AS levels). Which I will be taking up courses in my gap year.
The things I enjoy is: 3D animation, Digital Art, Web Designing, Music Composing, Game Engineering (developing).
But after I have finished college, I have no idea what direction to go in. Obversely I'll go into media. But I have so much enjoyment in every section in media, I cannot do every section. Did you get this as well? Or did you know exactly what you wanted to go into.
Also does all this 'media action' happen in London? Because my home town is in the Heart of Leicestershire.
Please point me in the right direction, and give me a few tips of what I should be looking for.
Thanks for you time, Ollie
