The early parts of the stoy unfold around Ichigo and some of his classmates. Ichigo has the abilitiy to see the spirits of the dearly departed, when one day he encounters a soul reaper rukia Kuchiki. That same night during an encounter with a hollow that could kill ichigo's family Rukia offers him some of her shinigami powers to fight the hollow, knowing that this could kill him he take rukia's sword but unintentionally also takes all of Rukia's powers, which results in Ichigo having to take on the duty as a soul reaper whilst Rukia recovers her abilities.
