  • From Camels to Crocodiles

From Perth we caught a flight to Broome..and it true style it was delayed for a few hours. This is becoming the norm now so took it in my stride. Broome was amazingly hot, damn hot and as a result extremely chilled out. There is definitely a correlation between the hotter the place in Australia, the more chilled out the people.

We spent a couple of days in Broome which ended in a sunset camel ride along cable beach. Cable beach in the daytime gives you everything you want from a beach - azure coloured water, blue skies and white sand and lots of room to play volleyball/rounders/frisbee etc. But Cable beach at sunset is something else. The weird thing is you get all these Ozzies in 4WD driving down on the beach to watch the sunset so amongst this beautiful beach scenery are a load of 4wd..but you can't blame them really. I would.

So, on to camels then. The last time I rode a camel I was in Tangier in North Africa and my memory of it was them being extremely smelly and I got snotted on with this gooey, hard to remove snot..gross! So, I wasn't particularly looking forward to meeting one again. However, I was pleasantly surprised. You get a little waft of stench every now and again, but that is acceptable. They made a hell of a noise getting up, but that's fair enough too - I would with 2 big humans on my back. But once you are up and they start to walk, you get this rocking motion side to side which is the perfect way to watch a sunset. I did have a little bit of an issue with the camel behind me (who was apparently gay) who took a liking to the fluffy on my mic, so every time I tried to take a shot behind, he would try and grab it...poor love. To be fair, as far as fluffies go, it is an attractive one!

From Broome we flew to Darwin where we based ourselves for a week whilst I recovered from a kidney infection. We headed off on a Kakadu tour with Wilderness adventures which was an great experience. The first day I was completely high from the pain killers I had been given so wasn't making much sense to anyone but I was enjoying it in my own little world. Seeing the crocs in the wild was pretty scary - not a bit like Crocodile Dundee...although our tour guide was called Mick..well, he was called Michael, but I think if you are Ozzie, you have to be as close to Mick Dundee as you can get! After a 3 days tour, camping, hard core trekking and swimming in spectacular gorges and waterfalls it was back to Darwin.

I love Darwin - it is small enough to navigate around. It has one main strip called Mitchell St where everything is located and then a couple of streets parallel for things like post offices and supermarkets. It is also warm enough to crisp so a lot of the time you are wandering around shops just taking advantage of their air con.

So, from Darwin we headed to Adelaide...which seems like a whole world away. Adelaide is rainy and really cold, so pretty similar to the UK then!

  • Goodbye NZ, you were awesome...G'Day Oz

New Zealand is such an amazing country...it has everything for everyone, whatever your pleasures may be. Our last couple of weeks there were pretty action packed and included a night at a posh hotel, The Heritage, an England vs All Blacks game and then watching Priscilla Queen of the Desert at the theatre. This was made even sweeter because I won a bet against PD Chris that the All Blacks would win, and the prize was a trip to see Priscilla when it arrived in London..nice!

After a reflective couple of days up in the Bay of Islands, we left New Zealand, and were onto the next country...Australia, home of Kangaroos, schooners, Digeridoos, thongs....and blimmin big whale sharks!

Our first stop was Ningaloo Reef where Roxy was working on Kings Ningaloo Reef tours and holy moly, what an amazing start. Now, I have a completely unfounded fear of sharks which is borne from fear of the unknown. It is probably also to do with watching Jaws at a young age, and having an older brother who liked to bully me into thinking there were big fish in any stretch of water, just waiting to rip my limbs off. (I was once stuck on a diving raft for hours after one such big fish story, but that's another tale). So, I mentioned this to Dani and Mel on the boat and they reassured me that this is a common fear, and that I had nothing to worry about.

When the time came to get in that water, I was getting a little concerned - this was after all a shark, and the biggest fish in the ocean...however, once I was in the water and saw it for the first time, any fears completely disappeared and as I swam only 3 metres away from this giant, I felt so calm and relaxed and pretty emotional too. It was gorgeous, a sleek, spotty, giant gliding though the water. It was truly the most amazing experience I have had in my life to date. I felt pretty humbled that this magnificent creature was happy to have someone flapping about next to it. I want to say thanks so much to all the crew - Josh, Chris, Dani and Mel and thanks to Inday who gave me the amazing underwater footage.

We headed to Perth where I managed to get a day off and so I headed down to Margaret River for a spot of surfing. There is such a nice vibe on the West coast of Oz. I have been to the East coast a few times, but never the West and I am not sure why. It is far more laid back and the beaches are breathtakingly gorgeous. Perth is a great city - the centre is vibrant with lots of suits having business lunches in the outdoor cafes. Kings Park (thanks for the tip Amy) allows you to take in incredible views of the city. We stayed out in Cottelsoe, about 2 min drive from the city centre. It was tiny, but again had a lovely relaxed feel about it.

So, it's been a cracking start in Australia...can't wait to see more...

  • Welsh girl loves Whales

Kaikora is the place to spot Whales and dolphins...FACT.

On the way to Kaikora we were treated to spectacular scenery decorated with snow. Our driver told us he had never seen snow like it in all his years of driving the bus and it was beautiful. Topped off by the magnificent Mount Cook which is the highest mountain in New Zealand. Roxy of course, fell asleep!!

An hour from Kaikora there was snow all around, but when we arrived, it was blue skies and sunshine. It was like the end scene of Narnia, apart from there were no stone statues around. Aslan must have worked some magic. It is the only place in the world where you can go snowboarding in the morning on the mountains and then come down and have a jolly good surf in the afternoon....now, that is my ideal place, just imagine that..AMAZING.

When we inquired about our whale watching tour we were warned against the choppiness of the sea and my word they were not lying - that boat was being flung up and down as if we were on a bungy. After looking around and watching the driver put a high tec mic in the water, we were finally treated to one of the most beautiful sights ever - my first sperm whale. I have always wanted to see one, and I was pretty emotional when i saw it. It was so massive and grand moving gracefully along the surface - like a modern friendly sea version of the T-Rex, the dinosaur, not the band. Then Moby the whale (original I know) did the dive back down below to it;s underwater home and the tail came up....Athena eat your heart out.

Not only did we see 3 sperm whales that day, we were also treated to an acrobatic display by a pod of dusky dolphins. Flippin show offs they were..trying to hog the limelight from the whales with their back flips and front flips. How do they know what each one is going to do. Do you think the smallest one jumps the highest and the oldest one goes in the middle? I would love to hear their conversation just before the jump..."Right lads, this time lets show them the double flip back loop star".

After this, we headed onto the ferry to the North Island. The only other ferry's I have been on have been from Dover to France on booze cruises where you see the white cliffs and then a load of sea. This ferry meandered it's way through lots of little islands before it headed out to the sea..it almost felt like a cruise (but with none of the posh lashings!).

Yah I've got loads. For starters... take the train in Vietnam, not the over night buses (man I hated those). So ya, book the train if you can. Follow the coasts. Definately stop in Hoi An for several days... you'll love it. Find the beach, explore the markets and visit.

Avoid Vim or Vihm, I forget it's name but they nick name it 'Grim Vim"... you can imagine why.

The south is much more interesting than the North but HaNoi is worth visiting. Halong Bay is nice too. And I did not go further north than HaNoi because I got sick and had my stuff stolen but there's a major town in the mountains that starts with an S (check a lonely planet) that should be REALLY worth checking out if you have time.

Let me know closer to the Laos and Thailand dates and I'll get back to you one some advice for those.

Awesome! I've always loved Frank Skinner, back from the Fantasy Football/Three Lions days. Must have been ace... although I bet he tried it on at some point...

The orifice is good thanks! A few minor setbacks - such as a new editor turning up at 9am this morning to find himself locked out of the edit suite - but we can't complain!
