Nada Surf "Weightless" Video Contest

Nada Surf wants you to direct their next music video, and Barsuk Records will award the winning contest entry $3,000.00.

Nada Surf is looking for a video for "Weightless", the third single off their current release Lucky. Aspiring and/or already-established auteurs need only check out the song (available for streaming at http://www.myspace.com/nadasurf ), shoot and edit a video, and upload it to http://www.youtube.com/group/nadasur... before the contest entry deadline of September 19th, 2008.


The contest winner will be chosen by a panel of judges with a proven track record of excellent taste, and Barsuk Records will award the winning entry $3,000.00 cash. Second and third place winners will receive copies of the forthcoming Nada Surf vinyl box set (due for release this fall, and including all five of the band's studio albums on vinyl, packaged together with a retrospective book of poster art, lyrics, and liner notes), an assortment of Nada Surf t-shirts and CDs and some gear from the good folks at www.dakine.com.

Nada Surf will be taking to the road this summer, playing a run of European festivals and select West Coast dates.

Lucky, the title of Nada Surf’s fifth album, is at once literal and ironic. Filled with images of restlessness, longing and the elusiveness of love, the band counterbalances the lyrical bittersweetness with musical buoyancy.

The reception to Lucky has been no less than stellar. The Los Angeles Times said, “The New York trio's fifth album solidifies its position as foremost purveyor of power pop,” while Guitar World hailed the new album as the band’s “most accomplished yet.” USA Today exclaimed “there are few on par with Nada Surf.” The New York Times noted that Nada Surf’s “yearning melodies and polished harmonies carry songs from despair,” while Blender praised their “lovely, surging melodies and clever lyrics.”

Kurt Cobain About A Son is a rock and roll film like no other - an intimate and moving portrait of the late musician and artist Kurt Cobain, told entirely in his own voice - without celebrity soundbites, news clips, sensational tabloid angles or attempts to mimic a grunge aesthetic.
Based on never-before-heard audio interviews by journalist Michael Azerrad, director AJ Schnack assembled selections and merged them with newly filmed, evocative imagery of the three cities in Washington State that played a major role in Cobain's life: Aberdeen, Olympia and Seattle. These impressionistic images are set to an evocative original score by noted Northwest musician and producer Steve Fisk (who produced Nirvana’s Blew EP) and Death Cab for Cutie frontman Ben Gibbard. Barsuk will be releasing the original score album as a limited edition, hand-numbered double LP on May 20th, and will include MP3s at no additional charge.

Lucky, Nada Surf’s fifth album was released by Barsuk in February 2008 as the acclaimed follow-up to Let Go (2003) and The Weight Is A Gift (2005). Barsuk will be releasing the album on vinyl nationally this summer, and will include MP3s at no additional charge. Look for more Nada Surf vinyl soon; Barsuk is putting finishing touches on a limited-edition retrospective collectors’ box containing all the band’s full-length albums (including their Elektra debut High/Low and their pre-Barsuk indie album The Proximity Effect) plus some extra goodies…

Mates of State fourth full length album, Re-Arrange Us, will be out on Barsuk on May 20th. Though conceived as a duo, Mates of State have never failed to generate a trademark wall of sound built on dozens of varied voicings of keys, drums, and alternately lushly layered and playfully dueling vocals. On Re-Arrange Us they move beyond these boundaries with additional instrumentation and a quantum leap in song craft. Kori Gardner’s piano and the emergence of both Mates' lead vocals from their trademark harmonizing signal the next stage of Mates of State's evolution. Barsuk will be releasing the album on vinyl nationally this summer, and will include MP3s at no additional charge.

Death Cab for Cutie’s sophomore Atlantic Records release Narrow Stairs arrives May 13th. “I hope this album is a bit of a surprise for those out there that think they have us all figured out. We can’t wait to share these songs with the world,” states Death Cab bassist Nick Harmer. Barsuk will be releasing the album on vinyl nationally late this summer.

Danny Seim began the Lackthereof project in 1997. His other band, Menomena started as a side project in 2000, and took over because Seim felt less self-conscious as a drummer than as a singer-songwriter. The first six Lackthereof releases were CD-R's that Seim gave away freely to friends until 2004, when Portland, OR indie label FILMguerrero released Christian the Christian. Your Anchor is the 9th full-length Lackthereof album, and the second one to be released in 2008. The first 2008 Lackthereof release is entitled My Haunted, and it’s currently available on vinyl or digitally via FILMguerrero. Your Anchor was performed entirely by Seim, and was recorded and mixed in his basement in Portland. Barsuk will be releasing the album nationally on CD and digitally in July, and on vinyl nationally this summer.
