Seány Says...
Being kind is 10, 000 times more important than being right. That is a hard lesson to learn. When we feel that we are a pawn in a game of injustice, we want to attack. But consider the consequences: pressure (being right) creates more resistance. Tolerance, patience, and understanding (being kind) create reconciliation and acceptance. That is the nature of things: the nature of a university, the nature of a family, the nature of a marriage. The sooner we learn that, the sooner we will be at peace.

Something to think about
Why is it that, as a culture, we are more comfortable seeing two men holding guns than holding hands? ~Ernest Gaines--------------------When I was in the military they gave me a medal for killing two men and a discharge for loving one. ~Epitaph of Leonard P. Matlovich, 1988--------------------

I get sick of listening to straight people complain about, "Well, hey, we don't have a heterosexual-pride day, why do you need a gay-pride day?" I remember when I was a kid I'd always ask my mom: "Why don't we have a Kid's Day? We have a Mother's Day and a Father's Day, but why don't we have a Kid's Day?" My mom would always say, "Every day is Kid's Day." To all those heterosexuals that bitch about gay pride, I say the same thing: Every day is heterosexual-pride day! Can't you people enjoy your banquet and not piss on those of us enjoying our crumbs over here in the corner? ~Rob Nash

  • I Like Colours - Derry Journal - Fri 29th May 2008

A few weeks ago, you may recall that I let slip, I wasn't a very big fan of Graham Norton's taste in fashion. I even had a bit of banter with him about his flamboyant attire when we met recently at the BBC production of I'd do anything. Well, how things come back to nip you in the bum! No not Graham, but a leading Irish broadsheet! They did a huge article on Irish celebrities and fashion last week and guess who their 'experts' choose as the worst dressed man in Ireland? Yep, go ahead, have your wee laugh, but that wasn't even the most insulting thing about it..... I came in joint place with Graham Norton!!!

I was fuming!! Ok, ill admit, I did have some fashion disasters whilst in the Big Brother house and I know that shell-suits, home-made jewellery and sweat-bands might not have been to everyone's tastes, but I felt I pulled the look off quite well, even down to the 80's hair-do which I insist was not intentional!

I learnt to evolve with current trends and to mix different styles to help build my unique look. I went on to win best dressed housemate of the series but obviously this went unnoticed with these so-called experts! To make things worse, my old buddy James Nesbitt went on to win best dressed!! Now all Jimmy has to do is wear a suit, which ranges from navy blue to light grey every time he makes an appearance and that qualifies for a winning formula of top style. The man has about 5 hairs on his head as were I have a lovely bunch of golden locks, each
one curled (naturally) to perfection! Doesn't that count for something?

As a Derry man, I feel that my fashion sense is just light-years ahead and I am very aware that I am part of a city that boasts of style innovators. We had men in this town wearing black shoes, black trousers and white socks showing, long before Michael Jackson Moonwalked the trend to the catwalk world of Rock 'n' Roll.

I remember my granny used to tie a scarf around her head back in the day because she said it helped lower her blood pressure. Ok, she could have just used flora on her toast, but that's not the point. Obviously Sylvester Stallone picked up on the trends of the Ardmore folk and took the look to the big screen in Rambo. My Granbo (the nick-name she earned after she became a victim of fashion-theft) was not one bit pleased and received no royalties in return, which was for the best as she'd probably have blown it all on sweat-vests and AK47's just to prove a point.

In the piece one leading female personal dresser quoted 'Seány O' Kane is beyond the point of help when it comes to his dress sense.' It came complete with a smug shot of the lady and I am not saying that she was burley in build, I am just saying that she was massively boned and I detected an once of jealously and rage purely because I can look good in a pair of skinny jeans. I'll admit that there are days when it seems as though a Rainbow has thrown up all over me, but you know what, who cares, I am a child of the 80's and I embrace my nostalgic taste in clothing. So Jimmy my lad, you can hold on to your bland coloured suits. I'd rather be remembered for my daring approach in experimenting with style and the colourful impression I leave on people long after I've gone.

  • High School Reunion - Derry Journal - Tuesday 20th May

Upon leaving high school back in 1998, I announced to fellow pupils that we would all be reunited in 10 years time and that I would do my best to ensure that I played a part in making it happen. Little did I realise just how big a job I was taking into my own hands. Along with close friend Laura-Ann O' Neill, who I also went to school with, we set about planning the reunion party months in advance, right up until the last minutes before it took place at the weekend in Peoples Bar Claudy.

It was such an over-whelming experience being in the same room with my fellow pupils since I left school all those years ago. For the first time in my adult life, I actually felt that I hadn’t got any older and time had not moved forward 10 years, almost like we were still in school, as though it were our formal night. The only difference this time, was that it wasn't illegal for us to be as merry as we wanted and of course the physical changes. The years had been good to my ex-pupils and although some had lesser hair and bigger waistlines (not just the few that were pregnant), everyone still looked pretty damn good.

There was a lot of drama in the run-up to the event itself, organising the venue, the food, ensuring people got their tickets, the music etc. and at one point I got a text to say someone who was due to attend that night had went into labour hours before! Luckily one of the people attending was now a mid-wife if anything similar was to happen at the party. I'd even bought congratulations cards on the birth of your baby boy and girl just to be safe.

The best part of the evening was the awards ceremony that had took place. The categories were simple enough, to nominate fellow pupils in the specified categories that ranged from 'Most enthusiastic child bearer award' to 'Most dedicated pupil award i.e. in terms of those who have come the furthest in a Geographical sense to the evening.' Some were a mouthful but it was the answers that gave us the biggest laughs, one country man even nominating my choice of jacket as being the biggest shock of the evening. Think very shiny black and silver rhinestones. Not the typical kind of attire you see people wear in Foreglen.

When it was time to burst open the Mexican Piñatas, out popped things that left most of the teaching staff blush. We had contemplated some of them taking turns at whacking it, but visions of one elderly teacher being split on the head with one of the inside treats instantly made us opt for the pupils to do the job instead. Never have I seen so many people scramble for handcuffs and edible body paint all at once like I did on that occasion.

It wasn't until near the end of the night were I felt that I could totally relax, a bit like your own Birthday party, were you find yourself feeling a little stressed, hoping that the night runs smoothly and ensuring everyone is okay. I had no more speeches to do, no more group pictures to take, no more awards to hand out. I looked around to soak up the atmosphere and just felt so nostalgic to see everyone reunited once again. Here together again 10 years on after spending almost every day together for 5 years at school. I almost didn't want the night to stop. They say all good things must come to an end and although it seems that the celebrations have done just that, I assure you that they have just taken a break and will pick up again in 2018.... 20 years on...

  • Borrow A Moment To Support Our Gareth! - Derry Journal - Friday 9th May 2008

If you haven’t been living on another planet recently, there’s no doubt you’ve heard about Derry’s latest talent, Garreth Borrow. I had recently been acquainted with the rising star of the BBC 1 show ‘I’d Do Anything’ and I can honestly say I have never been as fortunate to have ever met anyone so young and yet so aware of his natural ability to perform as magnificently as he can.

I accompanied the earnest young fella and his father Lenny to the production of the show at the weekend where he was preparing to sing and dance his little socks off to try and impress judges Denise Van Outen, John Borrowman and Sir Andrew Llyod-Webber. Garreth is in with a chance of becoming Oliver in the West-end stage show of the same name, a dream of his which could all soon become reality if successful.

Although I have taken part in several live broadcasts before, there was something much more intimate in the way the set had been put together, which made the night not only more intense for the finalists waiting to be picked for the role of Oliver but also for the group of girls who are in with the chance of being chosen to play Nancy, 3 of which all hail from Ireland and currently hot favourites, Jesse, Rachel and Niamh.

I noticed throughout the evening that Graham Norton kept looking over at me as if to say ‘I know him from somewhere’ but couldn’t think where from and at one point attempted a bit of flirtation when he randomly looked over to me, winked and said ‘Happy Birthday’. One audience member then offered me a kit-kat but I politely declined and insisted that Graham had been mistaken.

One thing Graham Norton has never been known for and that’s his great sense of fashion. He did appear very festive with his choice of outfit on the evening however and I couldn’t help myself when I said to him ‘Red and Green should never be seen, except maybe on an old Irish Queen’, although members of the audience seemed to find the quote more amusing than he did. I think it was at that point all flirting between us both came to an abrupt end.

The evening was worth going over for and it is an extremely long and stressful day for all the performers and I found myself getting caught up in all of the emotion by the end of the final performance. Its then when they have to say their goodbyes to one of the girls who had been hoping to become the next Nancy. Audience members have to sit through it all and endure yet another person’s dreams being taken away from them.

I worry about the boys though, as they are a lot younger but hope that they can cope with the rejection that will be inevitable for 9 out of the 12. It will all be part of their life experiences and no doubt will make them more determined than they did before entering the competition. Just as John Barrowman mentioned on the night, regardless whoever gets chosen, before him stood 12 leading men of the future. With one of them being a Derry native, all we can do is wait in excitement and continue to watch Gareth’s energy and enthusiasm radiate from our screens every week, however for me, its how he sings the songs that’s the key, he emotes and truly is a gift.
