Información: Edmund Hillary was born to Percival Augustus Hillary and Gertrude Hillary in Tuakau (south of Auckland), on 20 July 1919. He was educated at Auckland Grammar School and at 16 his interest in climbing was sparked during a school trip to Mount Ruapehu. Though gangly and uncoordinated, he found that he was physically strong. With his brother Rex, Hillary became a beekeeper a summer occupation that allowed him to pursue climbing in the winter. This payed off as in 1953 Sir Edmund Percival Hillary and Tenzing Norgay became the first climbers known to have reached the summit of Mount Everest. Edmunds excitement was obvious to everyone when he said "Well George, we finally knocked the bastard off." In 1953 he married Louise Mary Rose and together had 3 children Peter, Sarah and Belinda. He was a fantastic roll model for every New Zealander and will be sorely missed.
