  • The Dash

    I read of a man who stood to speak
    At the funeral of a friend
    He referred to the dates on her tombstone
    From the beginning to the end

    He noted that first came the date of her birth
    And spoke the following date with tears,
    But he said what mattered most of all
    Was the dash between those years.

    For that dash represents all the time
    That she spent alive on earth
    And now only those who loved her
    Know what that little line is worth.

    For it matters not how much we own
    The cars, the house, the cash,
    What matters is how we live and love
    And how we spent our dash

    So think about this long and hard,
    Are there things that you’d like to change?
    For you never know how much time is left,
    That can still be rearranged.

    If we could just slow down enough
    To consider what’s true and real,
    And always try to understand
    The way other people feel.

    And be less quick to anger,
    And show appreciation more,
    And love the people in our lives
    Like we’ve never loved before.

    If we treat each other with respect
    And more often wear a smile
    Remembering that this special dash
    Might only last a little while.

    So when your eulogy is being read
    With your life’s actions to rehash,
    Would you be proud of the things they say
    About how you spent you dash?

    PETER:
    Good thing I just watched that National Geographic special on fire trucks.

    (A herd of GAZELLES graze peacefully.
    ANGLE ON a totally realistically drawn fire truck laying in wait behind some tall grass.)

    BRITISH MAN:
    A solitary killer, the fire truck stalks its prey.

    (The fire truck moves stealthily forward in a couple of quick, jerky movements, accompanied by the hydraulic hiss of the engine. The gazelles perk up momentarily, then go back to grazing. The fire truck then races forward, sirens blaring, as the gazelles scatter. It chases them about, finally targeting one, and extending its ladder, bashing it repeatedly into unconsciousness. It begins to “feed” on the carcass.)

    BRITISH MAN:
    The fire truck can consume eight times its body weight.

    (Two ambulances approach the carcass. The fire truck aggressively blares its horn, protecting its food. The ambulances back off with a back up beep.)

    BRITISH MAN:
    The ambulances will have to wait their turn.

    What goes into a trashcan? Scrap paper, food, tissues, empty bottles. When somebody looks into a trashcan full of these things, that's all they see. But every peice of trash has a story. The scrap paper was a rejected love letter. That left over food was the remains of somebody's last meal. Those tissues wiped away a rivers worth of tears. The empty bottle was the last of many, full of alcohol, that your friend has drank to cure her broken heart; it's kept her alive, yet so dead for a long time now.

    Once the trashcan fills up, where does it go? The dump, where years of memorys and pain pile up.

    But I suppose not everything going into the trash symbolizes the pain that we all go through. There's a picture of your best friend and you from a few years ago. There's a little girl's old favorite doll, and a little boys old favorite action hero toy.

    I've taken so many things for granted. And I've been taken for granted, also. The memories I've had with you, and you, and you, have slipped into the dump no matter how much I wished they'd remain.

    You'll find me waiting at the dump. You'll find me sitting and desperately wishing i could go back.

      well I get on a 5hour flight to sydeny after a 2hour drive to perth on tuesday then from sydeny i get on a 3 hour flight t new zealand!!! So I'll be home wednesday :P
