This page was created to support the pro-choice movement.

We strongly believe that a woman should have complete control over her body regardless of what other people think.
We give a voice to the women who are judged day in and day out for making the decision that they had every right to make.
We support healthy debate, however we will not tolerate personal attacks, anyone found guilty will be reported and blocked from the site.
The right to a safe and sterile abortion is a right every woman should have regardless of what country she comes from.
In saying all this we do not believe this right should be abused.

We welcome you to the pro-choice movement.

  • For women considering an abortion.

Abortion means the deliberate induction of a miscarriage. Around 80,000 Australian women have the operation every year. Abortion is a safe surgical procedure, with some estimates suggesting that it is 10 times safer than childbirth. However, all surgery carries a degree of risk. Some of the complications of abortion can include infection, damage to parts of the reproductive system, and excessive bleeding.

    The female reproductive system
The female reproductive system is made up of the vagina, uterus (womb), fallopian tubes and ovaries. The vagina is a muscular canal that leads to the entrance (neck) of the uterus, which is called the cervix. The uterus is a muscular organ, shaped like an upside-down pear. Fallopian tubes extend from the uterus, one on each side. They both open near an ovary, and carry the eggs (ova) from the ovaries to the uterus. A fertilised egg lodges in the lining of the uterus, called the endometrium. To abort a foetus, the cervix must be opened a little wider to allow the surgical instruments into the uterus.

    General instructions
Always check with your clinic, but general instructions before undergoing an abortion include:

-Don’t eat, drink or smoke for six hours before the operation.
-Allow for at least two hours at the clinic.
-Bring sanitary pads, your referral letter, blood group card, Medicare card and any health care card.
-Arrange for someone to drive you home.

    Anaesthetic choices
Most women prefer general anaesthetic. All types of anaesthesia require fasting for six hours beforehand. This means no food or drink, not even water. The range of anaesthetic choices includes:

General anaesthetic – which induces complete unconsciousness. Any operation involving general anaesthesia carries risk. There is a danger of choking if fasting isn’t properly undertaken beforehand.

Nitrous oxide – or similar gas, to offer what’s known as a ‘twilight sleep’. The woman is awake, but sedated and calm.

Local anaesthetic – anaesthetic is injected directly into the cervix (paracervical block).
Local anaesthetic with intravenous sedation – a combination of intravenous sedation and analgesia with a paracervical block.
    Suction aspiration is commonly used

Most abortions are performed using what is called suction aspiration. The woman needs to be in her first trimester (first three months) of pregnancy, which means 12 weeks pregnant or less.

    First trimester abortion
The cervix opening is widened with rods of increasing size, and a tube is then inserted into the uterus. The foetus and placenta are vacuumed out. The uterus is then scraped with an instrument called a curette to make sure that no products remain behind. This operation takes less than 15 minutes.

If the woman is more than 12 weeks pregnant, she needs to have a mid-trimester abortion.

    Mid-trimester abortion
The procedure is similar to first trimester abortion, but preparing the cervix is more involved. Hormone blocking tablets are often used to help soften the cervix. These tablets may be taken orally (by mouth) or inserted into the woman’s vagina. They take about two hours to work. The abortion is then performed using suction and instruments to remove the tissue.

Alternatively, the cervix opening may be widened, and then a special device is inserted into the cervix. This device swells over several hours until the cervix is sufficiently opened to allow the abortion to occur. Drugs may also be used. The abortion is usually performed one or two days later.

    Complications of abortion
Estimates vary, but complications can occur in around three per cent of cases. The risk of complications greatly depends on gestational length (length of the pregnancy), since abortions performed in the first trimester of pregnancy are the safest. Another major safety factor is the doctor’s level of experience and training. Complications of abor

  • The Horror of Back Ally Abortions

People are endlessly campaigning for abortion to be made illegal in certain countries, or remain illegal. But the neglect to realise the horrors of what would happen if there wish came true!

Before abortion was legalised, desperate women and men sought out back ally abortionists, or attempted the procedure on their own. here's a list of the apparatus used in desperate times, please do not try at home...
    -scissors
    -crochet hooks
    -coat hangers
    -knitting needles
    -poison
    -bleach
    -turpentine
    -whiskey mixed with various drugs
    -throwing themselves down stairs
    -violently beating themselves

These attempts often ended in the woman dying painfully at the hands of a butcher with dirty tools and no pain medication. or crawling away to bleed to death quietly as the would receive severe punishment for having had an abortion in the first place.

If you want more information on the horrors of societies where abortion is illegal, please follow the link below.

  • morning after pill

    Sarah Smith door Sarah Smith
It was on the news recently that during the christmas and new year period that women can take home the morning after pill before they have even had sex. this is becasue the chemist and doctors surgeries wont be open, and many people will miss out on the short time they would be able to take he pill.

what do you think about this? do you think it is encouraging one night stands and unsafe sex? or do you think it is a responsible action for the NHS to take regarding unplanned pregnancy?

Abortion Truth - Young Beautiful Pregnant

my friend told me the other day... a girl she knew fell pregnant and had 3 scans showing her baby had clubfoot. She was asked many times if she wanted to get rid of the baby. She didnt and went on to delivery a COMPLETELY HEALTHY baby girl.. no clubfoot!
My mother was told my sister would have severe down syndrome! she is totally healthy n fine!
I know of many stories like these, I hate it how so many woman are pressured into having abortions because of scans showing 'this' & 'that' when sometimes they can get it TOTALLY wrong. poor bubbas. AND mothers!!

I didint say always laura Lol i said usually :) no i wouldnt call someone having an abortion because their life is in danger selfish those sort of cases are pretty few and far between though, and no i dont agree with it and no i wouldnt have an abortion even if they told me my life was in danger, just couldnt do it, but its not my place to judge or say they are selfish, yes understandably they would be terrified etc, its hard, i am so dead against abortions BUT i can also see it from their point of view!

Also yes the pills are being purchased by women in countries where abortion is illegal but there are much higher numbers of women from countries where it is still illegal. All I meant was if abortion is made illegal as some pro-lifers believe it should be, then there would be a huge increase in the number of women endangering themselves by doing things such as purchasing illegal pills

I wouldn’t personally say a termination due to a life threatening condition is the same as having one for personal reasons, e.g. financial, mental etc. but some pro-life ppl feel that it is still wrong for a woman to terminate her pregnancy even when her life is endanger, some would still call her selfish, which as I said is disgusting. All I was trying to say is there are occasions where an abortion is needed, and it is unfair of pro-lifers to go around saying that an abortion is never justified and it is always selfish of the woman to abort, when there are occasions where it is life saving for the woman

The foetus is not always dead missinsane, but it is true that it rarely survives with an ectopic pregnancy, but its nice to see you can atleast see where sometimes an abortion is warrented missinsane. there are some pro-lifers who do not think an abortion is necessary even when the mothers life is endanger, which is ridiculous if you ask me especially considering the baby is most likely not going to survive anyway.

In the case of ectopic pregnancy, the baby has USUALLY died, therefore even though it is classed as an abortion it is not actually killing the baby, and yes it is needed. I read a story about a lady a couple of years ago, where she had many complications with her pregnancy, and they didnt know why, turned out the egg had implanted outside the womb, kinda on top of it, if it had been picked up early enough more than likely she would have been advised to "terminate" as chances of her and bubbs surviving were "slim" long story short, both baby AND mother surivived, healthy bubbs, with little complications, yes she needed a c-section for the birth, and yes it was a difficult pregnancy for her. And your're welcome Rachenl. :)

I wasn’t comparing an ectopic pregnancy with an abortion leeane. I meant the woman’s only choice is to have an abortion in this case. I was using it as an example of when an abortion is necessary and why it needs to remain legal. In future please could you read my comments more carefully as I don’t like to repeat myself.
Also there are higher numbers of women purchasing illegal abortion pills in countries where it is not legal. check if you don ‘t believe me

I also read about woman purchasing the abortion pill online, its not just where abortion is illegal woman in the uk are also buyin there pills online as they dnt want to wait to see their consultant . I wouldnt class an etopic pregnancy the same as havin an abortion, yes the babys life is ended but with ectopic pregnancys the baby isnt goin to survive no matter what u do also if the mother doesnt get the baby removed she will die.

I agree with you Laura, abortion needs to be legal to definitely stop women from hurting themselves! At the end of the day if a women doesnt want a baby, she will try anything to get rid of it! Which is SO SO sad!
I think adoption needs to be more widely embraced as well!

At the end of the day there is def good reasons medically alot of the time.
But there are exceptions as well. I dont class aborting a downs baby as a medical abortion, thats just being selfish. They have one of the most beautiful natures! Seeing only the greatness in the world. We could learn ALOT from them!

And yeah she did seem happy Katrina! I just felt for her parents, it really seemed to rip their hearts out!

I also read something very interesting the other day. In countries such as Ireland where abortion is still illegal research has found that many women are opting to purchase illegal abortion pills over the internet. Some of these pills are fake and cost hundreds of pounds which means that innocent women are being ripped off, however this is the least of their worries. Without a proper consultation or any medical advise many women are encountering many medical difficulties through taking these pills. Some women have bad reactions to the pills, causing severe bleeding. Also without appropriate care some women are taking the pills incorrectly, not completing the abortion, so parts of the foetus are still left inside causing bad infection. Even if the pills do work, there is also no after care or counselling available and so some of these women are also becoming depressed. This is just another example of why abortion needs to be legal.

hmm and what if the mother's life was endanger? for example an ectopic pregnancy, which can be quite comon. when the a fertilized egg has implanted outside the uterus, in the ovary, abdomen, or the cervix. None of these areas has as much space or nurturing tissue as a uterus for a pregnancy to develop. As the fetus grows, it will eventually burst the organ that contains it. This can cause severe bleeding and endanger the mother's life. usually the baby does ot survive. so what would be wrong with a woman having an abortion then? the foetus will not survive anyway and if it is left it is very dangerous for the mother.

I can see where you're coming from tbh. I used to have a friend that said
"When I have a baby, if I find out it's got Downs Syndrome, I would abort it. If it like couldn't walk or anything, I'd just give it up"
Personally, if I was pregnant (which I'm not) and I found out my baby was disabled, I would keep it. Because at the end of the day, it's not his/hers fault. I agree that we have no righ to contradict wether a child would have a "poor quality" of life, so I take back what I said about that. I'm sure many people think the same as you, and thank you for answering my question :)

Because Drunken Fool. No matter what "medical" reason is given, the fact remains it is a child, a baby, an innocent little being, and to me life begins at conception, everything that makes us who we are is in those very first few cells. And if its ok to abort and unborn child for medical reasons, then why is not ok for someone to "help" someone else die for medical reasons? (no im not for that either just an example) for instance, someone who has become a quadraplegic, cannot move, has "poor quality" of life (as you put it for unborn children who have disabilitys) and if one of their loved ones helps them end their life, they are done for murder, yet its ok for someone to abort a child who may or may not (as doctors DO get diagnosis wrong ALOT) have a medical disability.

yeah I don't think I phrased it right. Laura just basically explained what I was going to. Thanks :D

I don't understand why people would have a problem with a medical abortion :/ If a mother felt she would not be able to cope with a disabled child, or that the child would be so serverly disabled that it would be in and out of hospital, constant operations, and popping pills for the rest of its life, well, what kind of life would that be? Although I do agree that sometimes abortions are done for really stupid reasons, I think medical abortions are the ones that I know most people agree with. In no way am I trying to say anyone who disagrees with me is wrong - I'm just curious Mizz Insane, what makes you believe medical abortions are wrong? I know you're pro-life which I respect 100%, but I'm curious as to why you're against medical abortions?:)

I think what “Ben’s hoe” was trying to say is that we do not even let animals suffer when they are in pain, we put them out of their misery. Why can’t it be the same with humans? If a child was going to be severely disabled it would have a very poor quality of life and also would also need an enormous amount of care then it would put a lot of strain and pressure on its parents, not every woman is superwoman, is it really fair to expect ppl to just deal with all the extra strain and stress with a disabled child if they feel they are unable? i know you will probably suggest adoption but the sad truth is that not many couples would adopt a disabled child, it is wrong and unfair i know but is unfortunatly true.
as you said some abortions are done for wrong and stupid reasons but in some cases it is warranted.

I feel sad for children who are healthy until something goes wrong during birth. Did you see 20/20?(I think it was on that), about that poor wee girl who was starved of oxygen at birth and what she became?
My mum also works in a centre that cares for people like that. Mum said they do have a small amount of happiness. Or seem to! They get simple pleasures out of different things.
They dont really feel like they miss out, coz they dont really know any better.
I would say that would be the same with some of those "medical abortions".
