- Last update seemed a bit moody and shit, so have another one:
Doing a degree course in Physics and Astrophysics at Glasgow University. It's awesome, but I wish I had more time to prepare things. Don't visit Jim's Bar or the pool hall as much as I'd like to - sorry guys!
Outwith the west end, you will probably find me at Rufus T's, Optimo, Cattie, or most likely the good old Kirkie Puffer, where I'll be necking down some Jager, Vodka, or Pints, depending on my mood.
Probably the Jager tbh.

I have a bone to pick with Greenpeace...
Now, I've never been a big fan of Greenpeace, but when I saw the article on their main website (linked from a forum somewhere) "End the nuclear age", I could not help but want to drop a small H-bomb on their HQs. Because after a quick bit of research, I found that nuclear fission is, in the long term, the most economical and environmentally friendly solution to the problem. I will quote some reasons for scrapping fission from the Greenpeace site, and then counter them so effectively that they will actually explode:
Here we go:
"Nuclear power already delivers less energy globally than renewable energy, and the share will continue to decrease in the coming years."
"Globally" is a cop-out. You're purposely including countries without the technology or economies to sustain such a program. A windmill is a little easier to build than a reactor. It's kinda like saying that NASA and other space agencies should be shut down because only a handful of countries have a space program, despite the obvious benefits. The richer countries (notably the US) is the relevant subject here, because they simply have a colossal energy demand/capita demand. Much higher than the global average. Thus, we have a harder time keeping our country running with wind mills and solar panels. Besides which, the cost and environmental impact of wind mills/etc. is hardly negligible.
"Despite what the nuclear industry tells us, building enough nuclear power stations to make a meaningful reduction in greenhouse gas emissions would cost trillions of dollars"
True, but a little-known fact about nuclear power is that once it is all set up, it actually costs substantially less to maintain than Coal/Gas fired stations (Most of it being spent on safety checks/waste disposal), which in turn proves to be cheaper in the long term! You pay 3x (minimum, I'll find some figures later if I remember) less to maintain nuclear power than for coal once it's finished. The up front cost would pay for itself in just a few short years. Thus the argument has no ground economically either:- The richer countries can borrow trillions for military programs, but they can't borrow trillions to save themselves tens of trillions of pounds/dollars ten years from now?... no, sorry, run that one by me again.
"create tens of thousands of tons of lethal high-level radioactive waste"
"tens of thousand tons"?! Oh my god that's so much! It's almost, say, HALF of the weight in coal each decent sized coal plant goes through A DAY! How about comparing it to something more meaningful like the quantity of toxic (yes, toxic) ash we spew into the air each day? At least the radioactive waste is still in a can and not in my lungs. 10 thousand tons is a pittance and easily dealt with. In fact, most, if not ALL of it, could be placed inside two or three Hampden-sized buildings!
"and result in a Chernobyl-scale accident once every decade."
So it would be reasonable to assume that the US, which has 50+ nuclear plants continually running for the past 20 years. And when was the last time there was a nuclear meltdown in the US? Oh, wait, Three-Mile Island, 1979. Even then, it was hardly catastrophic (Wiki it). Chernobyl was built with cheap soviet parts and poorly maintained, so it really was only a matter of when for them.
"Perhaps most significantly, it will squander the resources necessary to implement meaningful climate change solutions. "
Uranium mining is no more expensive or polluting than coal mining, especially when you take into account that uranium mining is taking place on a MUCH smaller scale than Coal mining. The only "resource" squandered is the money you pay for electricity for more expensive coal that could have been retired years ago if nuclear plants were still being built. They pay for themselves dammit! After that, they just save you money you can USE to make meaningful climate change, how's that?

Catch The Deluge In APapercuphace 11 semanasHello there squire!! Your kind addition of myself to ur social network is without doubt the most wonderfully excellent thing iv witnessed in the last 10 minutes. You see, 11 minutes ago I saw some eccentric give a homeless chap one 20 pound note sterling. How generous and yet so very queer. I hope your day is going well. I thank you again. Live long and be prosperous!
