Good morning year 11. I will be doing this morning's househall assembly. Can you believe I was the only one from my tutorial to volunteer? Anyway, this morning I want to talk to you about some thing we come across, almost every day. Most of us use these things to offend, or even without realizing. What I am going to talk about is stereotypes. I've noticed that, in our generation, terms such as 'emo' and 'chav' are used not only to describe, but stereotype people.
Our generation has come to believe that anyone who listens to punk, rock, and even some pop, anyone who has dyed dark hair, wears eyeliner or skinny jeans, or anyone who is quiet, lonely or excluded is an 'emo'. I don't understand how a term which was once an abbreviation for 'emotional', and a genre of music has become a type of person. What evidence is there to show every kid in dark clothing is 'emo' or even emotionally unstable, as some people claim?
And these labels get worse, if you fit the 'emo' description you'll get called 'emo' as an insult. This particular insult is generally used to suggest the victim is a self harmer, or even suicidal. I think it's completely out of order to suggest such things about someone you hardly know, or even use the fact they are mentally and emotionally unstable as an insult. In adolescents, one in eight might suffer from depression. Only 30% receive the treatment they need. The other 70% have to struggle and try and make it to adulthood without the help. Our constant insults might be what's making that 70% afraid to ask for help, and also making them feel worse, and the struggle harder. Recently there have been a few cases in the news of adolescent suicide, but it isn't really taken as seriously as one might like to think. Also, it hasn't deterred the mean bullies from using the stereotypes still.
For me to really be able to defend the victims of stereotyping I must first see the opposite point of view, that of the people stereotyping others. I understand they might of come across cases where people they know, who dress in dark clothing, 'goths' or 'emos', have actually been known to be depressed. But this, under no circumstances, gives them the right to label or assume things about people who are 'goth' or 'emo' are depressed. And even if they know the particular person is, it's not something you should be mean about, you should support them.
Another thing our generation is known to do is exclude others, and form groups. I honestly don't understand how people can't be friends if they dress differently, have different hairstyles, or even just different music tastes. All this clique-creating is doing is making people follow the crowd, just to get in with the right friends. I think it's terrible that we can't just be ourselves anymore. These are supposed to be the best years of our lives, and I, for one will not stand for being labeled. We shouldn't let our prejudice cause so much discrimination.
Let's make a change, and get ourselves freedom while we can. I think from now on we should just be ourselves, regardless of what people will think . Let's make this last school year the best. Thank you for listening.
