INTELLIGENCE:As this is a dominant breed, especially with the same sex, it is essential the dog be thoroughly socialized before allowing free play in the park with other dogs. A Malamute needs a confident handler who will clearly take on the role of pack leader and train the dog with kind, but firm methods. Although the Malamute will never respond to commands at lightening speed, it can learn obedience and agility commands and will perform them competently.
TEMPERMENT:The Alaskan Malamute is an extremely affectionate dog that loves to play with everyone. He is loyal to his family and is a trusted companion. Generally they are overactive puppies that considerable calm down as they mature. They are not meant to serve as a watchdog because of their friendliness towards everyone. They are known to be in constant state of supervision as they can easily get into trouble when not watched, especially in a new environment. Males can be dominant so early training and socialization is key. Their immense desire to please makes them terrific students
DETAILS:Alaskan Malamutes have a broad head which highlights their brown, almond shaped eyes and triangular shaped ears with round tips. When alert, the ears stand straight up and slightly forward. Their muzzle is long and somewhat narrow. Usually this dog has a black nose, lips, eye rims though it is brown in a red coated dog. The furry tail follows the line of the spine and is usually carried over the back of the dog. Their legs are strong and muscular sitting atop large paws with well arched toes and pads that are cushy and rough. To keep their paws warm when working in the snow these dogs also have fur between their toes. Like other breeds, Malamutes have a double coat. The outer top coat is short and rough while the under coat is greasy and wooly. There are many color variations amongst this breed that vary though the prevailing color is white on the underbody, legs, paws, and face. The rest of the body colors range from light gray with shades of black, sable or red with sable.
HEALTH CONCERNS:The Alaskan Malamute is prone to hip and elbow dysplasia as well as bloat.
This breed does well both indoors and outdoors but is not recommended for apartment living because they do have a tendency to howl often. They are also active in both environments and lo0 Comments 707 days
