    Sir Ben Applauds McAvoy

I got great tickets this week for Three Days Of Rain at the Apollo Theatre in the West End. I wanted to see what James McAvoy was like on stage, having enjoyed the film performances of this talented young Scot. On arrival, I was delighted to notice that I was sitting two rows behind Sir Ben Kingsley and watched with interest at the end to see his reaction. He clearly enjoyed it as his hands were raised in applause at the end and as he was leaving he gushed about how good it was and that he was going to get a message backstage to McAvoy to let him know. Praise indeed and something I'm sure my fellow Scot will relish.

My view was that it was an unnecessarily complex play, with minimal set and some questionable judgements on direction, but all three actors were very talented and compelling to watch, so I'd recommend it from that perspective.

    Roaming In Rome

I was in Rome last weekend. What a place. Until you’re there you have no idea of the scale of their incredible architecture. Stunning. I took my video camera and ended up filming the opening scene for my latest documentary, when by chance the Pope popped out of his balcony at St Peter’s and blessed tens of thousands of people in the square. It was a great start to filming. I can’t tell you what it’s about nor what the name of it is, but I’ve given a code name of The Time Project and you can join the group on Facebook if you want to follow the journey of the film.

I’m off to Glasgow this weekend, so it’s another early newsletter. It’s the Rangers v Celtic Cup Final at Hampden and I’ve organised some hospitality for the day with some friends and family. Really looking forward to it. Hope you have a good weekend planned.

Sweeney Todd Demon Barber of Fleet Street

    The Queen’s Theatre Hornchurch

    Review by Kelly Potter

After the success of Tim Burton’s film, I was expecting an all singing all dancing spectacular, and was more than pleasantly surprised as the experience proved to be quite different. Not a song in earshot.

    The Caretaker at Bolton Octagon

    Review by Caroline May

This slightly surreal three-hander is a stage version of scissors-paper-stone, as a trio of oddly-assorted characters vie for supremacy in a seedy bedsit.

    Bobby Pattinson and Friends
The Customs House, South Shields, Tyne & Wear
    Review by Steve Burbridge
Bobby, a tireless charity fund-raiser, is a spritely seventy-five year old with the gift of the gab and a mischievous twinkle in his eye. His gigs are always popular with audiences who revel in the type of entertainment that was once the staple of Clubland for decades, but is now, sadly, all too rare.

    The Duchess of Malfi

    The White Bear Theatre Club

    Review by Samuel Miller

This Duchess is a naïve, spoilt royal, unaccustomed to taking responsibility and ignorant of consequences. Ferdinand and the Cardinal – monsters though they may be – are genuinely wronged by their sister’s betrayal, and this is the first time I have seen

  • HORROR AND MURDER @ UK THEATRE NETWORK

    Morning

Hope you are well. My wrist is slowly recovering, enough to type a quick newsletter. My sound and editing team managed to finish the tiny changes to MAKING IT IN HOLLYWOOD to start getting it out to festivals, broadcasters and studios. It was quite strange watching it during Oscars week, when exactly two years ago when filming started, I had wished Kate Winslet “Good luck for tonight” as she walked towards the red carpet.

This week I went to see Scott Christie in Jekyll and Hyde at the Union Theatre at Southwark. Tonight’s the last night so be quick to get along and see a great production of this classic. The direction, writing, lighting and performance were all first class and it was nice to see a fringe production with such high production values. It's a great setting under the arches of the South Bank of London and it's enhanced with smoke machines and clever lighting to scare the living daylights out of their audience. Boo !

I received a copy of The Ouija Board, a horror film I had a small part in a few years ago. It's finally seen the light of day and heading to horror festivals. Then I got asked to be in a Zombie movie playing a Glaswegian that you can't understand. No acting involved clearly.

The Big Picture project also made a big step this week. We’ve selected 4 scripts to take forward to potential investors next month. There’s a lot of talented writers out there but we feel we’ve selected some great stories which you’ll hear more about over the coming 18 months of production.

It's all happening. Hope it is where you are too....

Enjoy your week, and don’t forget to listen to http://www.nevisradio.co.uk @ 12-2pm on Saturday’s where you’ll hear some of my favourites from the 70’s, 80’s and 90’s.

    Hey guys,

come and join us for a spectacular performance of 'Zombie Prom'.

Zombie Prom itself could be described as Grease meets Little Shop of Horrors. Set in the 1950’s at Enrico Fermi High we meet Jonny (who spells his name without the customary ‘h’) and Toffee a pair drawn together through teen love. Toffee is persuaded by her elders to dump Jonny as he, ‘has juvenile detention centre written all over him!’ On hearing this news Jonny drives his motorbike into the local nuclear reactor. No sooner has he disappeared, Jonny comes back from the dead as a nuclear Zombie to try and take Toffee to the senior prom. Will Miss Strict the schools headmistress let Jonny re-enrol, will Toffee accept Jonny as a Zombie, will they make it to the prom…..find out all this and more at the Aberdeen Arts Centre from the 28th-31st of October.

You can buy tickets from www.boxofficeaberdeen.com or call 01224 620011.

Hope to see you there Dx
