I must confess: I was deeply affected by the news of Dan Fogelberg's passing this week. I first heard his music when it was performed by an acoustic guitarist in 1978, during my freshman year of college, and have enjoyed his music, lyrics and vocals ever since. But more than any particular lyric or tune, I admired the clean soul he seemed to possess. Of course, I didn't know the man personally, but I know that people can know my heart through my books, so I trust that I had some appreciation for Dan's heart through his music.

I remember sitting with a friend at sunset at a beach in Tel Aviv, taking turns with the Walkman, allowing one to listen and sing, while the other sang along. And I remember going to a concert at Jones Beach Theater, when Dan introduced, "Run for the Roses," by saying: "This next one's an old one. If you remember this one, you definitely got a babysitter tonight." So, the night of his passing, my wife, two boys, and I sat on the couch in the living room and played Dan Fogelberg songs until we were all ready to head to bed, the songs still running in our minds. Something tells me that if the last thing a person listens to before falling asleep for the night is Dan Fogelberg music, good dreams are a lock. Rest in peace, Dan.
