- We are the Scottish Trades Union Congress’s (STUC) Youth Committee.
Trade Unions are organisations which protect workers rights. Unions make workplaces safer, help employees get better training and negotiate improved pay and conditions. Unions take on the bad employers, and work with the good to make them better.
This is why we believe that young people are better in Trade Unions. We want to encourage all young union members to be active within their union and the wider Trade Union movement. So go on get involved!

STUC YOUTH COMMITTEE PETITION ON YOUTH POVERTY
von
D
Our petition is now closed! We recieved 215 signatures - enough to get a reply from Number 10!Thanks for taking the time to sign it! STUCYC0 Antworten 86 Wochen
The text of the Motion is:
“We, the undersigned, petition the Government to address the unacceptable levels of youth poverty in the United Kingdom.
Youth poverty in the United Kingdom currently stands at 22.7% of those aged 16 to 19 and 20.3% of those between 20 and 24 years of age. These are among the highest rates of youth poverty in all of the original European member states and indicate significant problems systematic of the low wages, temporary employment and discriminatory benefits system. This can be compounded by young people in rural areas of the United Kingdom having to leave home earlier to continue their education or secure employment. These factors allied with an unfair and discriminatory National Minimum Wage fuel youth poverty.
Living costs for the young staying on their own are the same as for older people but the benefits system calculates that those under 25 should need £12.30 per week less to live off than those over 25. This unfairness also prevents those under 25, without family, living on a low wage from claiming tax credits.
The Government needs to end this discrimination and abolish unacceptable poverty rates in young people.”
Thanks for your assistance.

STUC on Royal Mail Dispute
Speaking as the first of two 24 hour strikes by Royal Mail staff got underway, Grahame Smith, Scottish Trades Union Congress (STUC) General Secretary said:
“The STUC gives its full support to the Communication Workers Union (CWU) in this dispute. The strike is the inevitable consequence of Royal Mail management’s refusal to consult, negotiate and agree a change package. It is not, as is widely and misleadingly reported, attributable to a failure of the CWU to address workplace ‘modernisation’.
“The CWU has, once again, stated its offer of third party mediation without any preconditions facilitated by ACAS. Royal Mail management should accept this offer in good faith and move to mediation as quickly as possible”.

please if you have a moment sign up to these, and any others you come across - centralisation and shifting of work in the private sector is bad enough, but doing this to the public sector represents a green light for such moves at a time when the Tories are getting research that says councilos should pay people to move from where they are to London, Oxford and Cambridge...

Hey guys
We set up a flatshare bebo page last year, mainly to help young people find suitable accommodation. It seems to have gone down really well and new members are joining regularly.
With so many students looking for accommodation for going back to uni/college, I thought I would take this opportunity to highlight our page again.
If you would like to look for a flat to share or a mate to share your flat please add a post to our page, the URL is - http://www.bebo.com/Flatshare-flatmate
Please remember your post will be open for everyone to view, so be careful what details you add, (eg no personal info or tel nos). Please add us to your groups to get the word out.
Thank you
Hello STUC Youth
I just signed a petition asking the G8 take urgent action against extreme poverty, and I'm hoping that you'll join me.
Sign the petition now at: http://www.one.org/international/g8
There has been a lot of progress against extreme poverty in recent years, but, as recent headlines about the global food crisis and natural disasters like Cyclone Nargis in Burma will tell you, there is still much to be done.
When we unite with one voice and call upon our leaders to take action, we can and will solve these problems.
Thanks, Andrew Cuthbert
AHH I've not even thought about that! How many motions have you got in? We've got three - and I think I'm talking to the Life Long Learning one - I can't be bothered preparing anything
I may just leave it to lady drink!! It worked last year!!!!
I really need to write my speech for this conference...argh!!

Solidarity comrades!
I agree with you to some extent there. But I feel that we wouldn't have the same advantage when looking for employment.
Because of ageist attitudes in society, an adult would most likely be favoured against a teenager when applying for a job, they would be viewed as more reliable and experienced in the work-place.
The minimum wage for young people does have advantages, but I think that if the wage was the same as adult workers, you would see far less teenagers and young people in employment.
It should be raised of course, but it shouldn't be the same rate as an adult, or we'd lose this advantage when looking for employment. In my opinion it would lead to inexperienced young adults.
Is it just me? Or is it not a fucking disgrace that people aged 16-18 an be paid less than £4.00 per hour whilst someone that does the exact same job as them and works the same hours gets paid nearly £5.00. If this were women and men there would be up roar. I seems to me that ageism is an accepted form of discrimanation in this country and personaly it makes me sick.
Correct, we only need Unions because people under that capitalist system are willing to abuse people for their own gain, and if you don't act against injustice then you will keep your injustice. Unions are needed to make sure that corporations are not going to abuse their workers.
It's ironically the capitalist system that makes the need for unions...
(Of course unions do more than just that)
Anyway, Luv for the STUC youth committee.
it would be, but until employers stop abusing workers, treat people fairly and put workers first we will need unions!
This group doesn't nearly have enough luv ¬.¬
THERE IS POWER IN A UNION
Ha ha
All my rants are carefully backed up with hard evidence
