  • I'll beat the s*** out of Hopkins

    Thursday, April 17, 2008

JOE CALZAGHE has vowed to destroy Bernard Hopkins when they go toe-to-toe in Las Vegas on Saturday night.

Hopkins claims he will cement his place as one of boxing's greats by ending the Welshman's undefeated streak.

But Calzaghe is confident he will ram the trash-talking American's words back down his throat.

The undisputed super-middleweight champ said: "Hopkins keeps calling himself a living legend but at the end of the day he's still lost four fights.

"He's been beaten four times, which is four times more than I have, so I don't give a s*** what he says.

"He can talk b******s all he likes — let's see what happens in the fight.

"My dad Enzo is a good caller of fights and he's told me that if I fight like I usually do, I'll beat the s*** out of Hopkins."

Calzaghe insists he has never felt better as he prepares to fight at light-heavyweight for the first time in his career.

But his fans will be shocked to hear his preparations have not involved him studying footage of The Executioner.

Calzaghe, 36, added: "I've hardly watched Hopkins, hardly seen any of his fights.

"I watched his last fight, that's all, but that's all I ever do. It's all I did before I fought Mikkel Kessler as well.

"All I need to know is whether he's right-handed or left-handed and whether he likes to come forward or stay back — and that's about it.

"There's no point watching a load of his past fights because you can look a million dollars against one guy and then look s*** against the next.

"I have a quick look at my opponent's style, then I just go in and do my thing."

You can read a full interview with Joe Calzaghe in this week's Sport Magazine, the UK’s largest men’s magazine. Visit www.myfreesport.co.uk for more information

  • THE BATTLE OF BRITAIN :From The Times December 29, 2007

David Haye agrees to Enzo Maccarinelli title showdown

David Haye and Enzo Maccarinelli will meet in a world cruiserweight title unification bout on March 8, the biggest all-British bout since Nigel Benn and Chris Eubank clashed at Old Trafford 15 years ago, it was announced yesterday.

News of the bout was broken in The Times on Monday, after Haye, the WBC and WBA champion, postponed his plans to move to heavyweight. “I feel that it is my duty as world champion to fight the very best,” Haye said.

After beating Jean-Marc Mormeck in Paris in November, Haye said it would be too dangerous to try to make the cruiserweight limit again. There had been talk of Haye next facing Hasim Rahman, the former world heavyweight champion, but the offer from Frank Warren, the promoter, and Setanta, which will broadcast the bout, was too much to turn down.

“We are both big punchers but I believe that I am the hardest hitter out of the two of us,” Maccarinelli said. Haye has stopped 19 of his 21 opponents (14 inside three rounds), while Maccarinelli has stopped 21 of his 29 opponents (16 inside three rounds).

  • Calzaghe wins Sports Personality

    AWARD WINNERS :

Sports Personality of the Year: Joe Calzaghe
Overseas Sports Personality of the Year: Roger Federer
Coach of the Year: Enzo Calzaghe
Team of the Year: England rugby union team
Lifetime Achievement Award: Sir Bobby Robson
    Helen Rollason Award: Oscar Pistorius
Unsung Hero of the Year: Margaret Simons
Young Sports Personality of the Year: Tom Daley

Welsh boxing superstar Joe Calzaghe brought his superb year to a close by winning the BBC Sports Personality of the Year Award.
The 35-year-old finished ahead of Formula One star Lewis Hamilton, while boxer Ricky Hatton was in third place.
Calzaghe, the world super-middleweight champion, is undefeated in 44 fights, including a superb win over Mikkel Kessler in November.
Enzo Calzaghe, Joe's father and trainer, was named Coach of the Year.
"I'm shocked - it's a massive honour and it caps off a great year for me," said the boxer who has been a world champion for 10 years.

    Calzaghe won with 177,748 (28.19%) votes to Hamilton's 122,649 (19.45%) and Hatton's 85,280 (13.53%).

He received the trophy from Lennox Lewis in Las Vegas after travelling to the USA to support his friend Hatton, who was defeated by Floyd Mayweather on Saturday night.

And after being on the shortlist last year but not making the top three in the voting, Calzaghe joked: "I said I didn't care last year but I lied."

He added: "I'm proud of it, it's a real achievement and also with my dad winning tonight. To get two boxers in the top three is amazing.

  • Want to Come Train

    BoyHero by BoyHero
I would love to come to South Wales to train for some time at the club under Enzo and Team Calzaghe. Only problem is that I currently live in San Diego, California USA.

A week or two, month, however long.

Anyone open for a host or work-exchange to help me train at this legendary gym and experience South Wales (I've never left the USA)?

Any advise or help would be great.

    Regards,
    Adam

  • charity boxing event!!!!!!!!!

Geraint Bugsy Brown by Geraint Bugsy Brown
    Dear Team Calzaghe,
I am writing to you to ask for your help. I play for a local football team and we are in dire need of new facillites, im trying to organise a charity boxing event between welsh celebrities and players from my club,CRAZY i know but if i don't do something then we will fall victim to lack of funds, I would like to organise this event at the Brewery field bridgend and of course with team Calzaghe in tow then it would send interest through the roof literally!!! . At our club we have three senior teams and two junior teams, we are a very closely knit club and are begging for help you are the first people we have spoken to the old saying goes " dont want the monkey where's the organ grinder" basically trying to go straight to the top! there would be 10 fights in totall (providing enough celeb interest) consisting of seven-1minute rounds, trying to get some local bands to play and local comedians to have a few minutes and make people weep! the money rasied from the event would be split between our football club and a local chairty youth centre

k.p.c youth- Its a charity run centre with over 500 members rangeing from 8 year olds upto 25 year olds. it offers young people a place to "hang out" instead of the streets where they are prone to endless mischief. the lady who started this charity actually built the centre from the foundations to the roof plus everything in between she died in 2005 due to the posion called cancer ever since then the centre has slowly gone down hill, all the charity money has been moved on to " bigger things". I started going to kpc when i was about 9 years old and still go and help today if kpc youth never exsisted then who knows where i would be today? it would mean alot to all the people of the two small towns called cefn and pyle if you could get back to us with some information!

    Kind regards geraint brown (BUGSY)
