Ich über mich
Sinn Fein is a republican and labour party, taking its inspiration from the politics of Wolfe Tone, James Connolly and the 1916 Easter Rising.
Sinn Féin, the only all-Ireland party, is committed to achieving a 32-County democratic socialist republic and the end of British rule in Ireland.
Sinn Féin is nationalist and internationalist. It is anti-imperialist, anti-fascist and anti-racist and is a radical, campaigning, activist party

Since 1984 when Alex Maskey became the first Sinn Féin councillor to enter City Hall the Party in Belfast has gone from strength to strength and is now the largest political party in the city.

This growth nationally and at a Belfast level has been mirrored throughout South and East Belfast with new cumainn (branches) being formed and the Party continuing to build a fresh alternative to the stale politics, corruption and mismanagement of the Establishment parties.

"We are out for Ireland for the Irish. But who are the Irish? Not the rack-renting, slum owning landlord; not the sweating, profit-grinding capitalist; not the sleek and oily lawyer; not the prostitute pressman - the hired liars of the enemy . . . but the Irish working class . . . The cause of labour is the cause of Ireland. The cause of Ireland is the cause of labour. They cannot be dissevered . . . Therefore, on Sunday, April 16th, the Green Flag of Ireland will be solemnly hoisted over Liberty Hall." James Connolly, Commander of the Citizen Army, writing in the Workers' Republic to alert members of the imminent Rising, April 8, 1916.

    "Durkan comments a disastrous U-Turn" - McGuinness

Deputy First Minister Martin McGuinness MP MLA has tonight expressed his amazement at comments by the SDLP leader Mark Durkan that power sharing arrangements in Stormont should be scrapped.

    Mr McGuinness said,

"It amazes me how the leader of the SDLP would take up and argue the position of Unionists over the past ten years that the mandatory coalition should be ended. The position he has adopted is effectively throwing his weight behind the likes of Jim Allister and other anti peace process elements.

The Partnership Arrangements as defined by the Good Friday Agreement were supported overwhelming the by the people of Ireland, north and south; this proposal from the leader of the SDLP is a total recipe for disaster.

What Mark Durkan is suggesting, is an abandonment of the principles of the Good Friday Agreement and essentially an abandonment of the rights and entitlements of Nationalists and Republicans as secured by that agreement.

This disastrous U-Turn by the SDLP indicates how willing they appear to be to surrender to the DUP and others demands for a return to Unionist majority rule.

The position articulated tonight is evidence of a desperate desire by the SDLP to get into power without the actual mandate to do it.

  • SDLP putting self-interest ahead of securing transfer of powers

Sinn Féin Assembly member Alex Maskey today said that the SDLP MLA Margaret Ritchie was either suffering from 'extreme paranoia or delusions of grandeur' after she attempted to suggest that there was a grand conspiracy underway to stop her party becoming justice minister.

    Mr Maskey said:

"The recent enthusiasm being displayed by the SDLP to assume a future justice ministry is interesting given the fact that the SDLP never previously argued for such powers to be transferred. Indeed in 2001 the then Deputy Leader Seamus Mallon told us that no further policing legislation was possible. Sinn Féin's negotiating strategy proved him wrong and further important changes were secured in legislation.

"Many nationalists will be disappointed that at a time when maximum pressure needs to be maintained on the British government to deliver their St. Andrews Agreement commitments in this area that senior members of the SDLP choose once again to put narrow self-interest ahead of ensuring that these powers are transferred speedily.

"Margaret Ritchie's latest contribution is to allege a grand conspiracy amongst the other parties and the governments against her party. The reality is of course very different. Margaret Ritchie is suffering either from a case of extreme paranoia or delusions of grandeur.

"I can assure her that the position of the SDLP has played no part in any of our discussions on this issue and it is beyond me why Margaret Ritchie would think that her party's position would be an issue for Sinn Féin at a time when the sole focus needs to be on ensuring delivery from the British government." • As the old saying goes, a picture paints a thousand words.

As the old saying goes, a picture paints a thousand words.

That is the approach South Belfast MLA Alex Maskey is taking with a display of pictures taken during a visit to the Auschwitz death camp in September 2005.

The exhibition will take place at St Mary’s University College this Monday (June 16) at 7.15pm after he was inspired by what he calls a “morbid fascination” with the infamous location in Poland.

“The word fascination doesn’t seem to gel with morbid, but that’s what it is. It seems to be the scale that most of us find hard to come to terms with.

“In our own conflict, we have all been very close to people losing their lives, so it is important that people are reminded of man’s inhumanity to man and see the precision with which the killing machine was carried out.”

Before reaching the camp, Alex said he had certain “notions” in his mind regarding the facility.

“Like everyone else, I had heard the sheer horror stories about what happened there. It is, in actuality, the ultimate designer death camp.

“We have all seen the films, read the books and heard the testimonies, so we have almost become immune to the scale of it all.

“I thought I would have known what to expect, but there is still such a jolt when you reach the camp. It is still hard for me to put into words, which is where the pictures come in.”

The Sinn Fein man said attempting to personalise the deaths was one of the reasons he decided to document his journey.

“One image in particular stands out for me. Along with everyone else, I was confronted by a huge bank of shoes, with the vast majority dark coloured, ripped and dirty.

“But one pair in the middle stood out because they were bright red.

“Like a slap in the face, that reminded me that each pair was once an individual. It brought it back from an industrial scale and re-humanised what was an inhuman image.”

Alex said the camp showed where intolerance can lead to if it is allowed to flourish.

“On June 14, 1940, almost 68 years to the day of the exhibition, the first prisoners were sent to Auschwitz I.

“Of those 728 people, only 12 were Jewish, with the rest made up of political opponents to the Nazi regime.

“Yet between the two main camps, by 1945 Auschwitz ended up as the centre of the attempted massacre of European Jewry.

“It shows what happens when bigotry, intolerance and political repression is accepted.”

As with many visitors to Auschwitz, Alex wrestled over whether to take pictures of the facility in the first place.

“At first, I thought instinctively that I would take my camera. But then I began to think about how I could take pictures of some of the things that are there.

“Literally on the way out the door, I changed my mind again and lifted my camera.

“I said to myself that I would reluctantly take pictures, but they wouldn’t be for my own use and that I would have to do something with them.”

Ultimately, he put a few of the images together and wrote a blurb about each.

“A few people were encouraging me to do something further with them, so I began to think that if I could share my experiences with a wider audience, it would be worthwhile.

“It is my personal, little contribution to raising awareness to what happened and indeed what continues to happen in locations throughout the world.

“Nobody is going to learn anything at the exhibition because we have all seen pictures and maybe even some people have had the privilege of going to Auschwitz themselves, but this is my take on it.

“Maybe if people come along, they can see my pictures and take time to reflect that given the circumstances, any one of us could be a part of this.”
