Former Bulldogs player Jason McGrady who is the brother of 1991 Rothmans Medalist Ewan McGrady passed away yesterday at the tender age of 39.

McGrady had been battling cancer and sadly lost his battle yesterday at an age far too young.

The Bulldogs left a short notice on their website last night saying, "The Bulldogs wish to pass on their thoughts and condolences to the family and friends of Jason McGrady who passed away today (Tuesday) after battling cancer."

McGrady played three seasons at the Bulldogs from 1990 to 1992 and appeared in 51 matches across all three grades.

McGrady appeared in seven first grade matches making his debut as a replacement against the Roosters in 1991, which was captained by his older brother Ewan with regular captain Terry Lamb unavailable due to suspension. The following week he achieved a rare distinction of playing all three grades in the one day including 60 minutes in first grade against the Steelers.

McGrady played five matches in first grade in 1992 before he left the club after failing to come to terms on a new deal and played the remainder of his football career with Queensland club Redcliffe and also played in the bush.

McGrady played the majority of the season in the Bulldogs 1991 Presidents Cup side, but was injured in the semi-finals and missed out on tasting Grand Final success.

Bulldogs legend and crowd favourite Geoff Robinson was Coach of the 1991 Presidents Cup side and was very distressed to hear the news about McGrady's tragic passing. Robinson said, "He was a very good player for our side. He was very family orientated, a good person and well mannered.

"He was a shy person, but as the 1991 season got on he began to talk more, but not a lot. He got on well with all his team-mates and the coaching staff.

"His passing is very, very sad. My condolences go out to all the McGrady family. It's a very sad day."

Bulldogs Football Club and CBDJRL Life Member Les Bateman was Manager of the 1991 Presidents Cup and he said, "I had a lot to do with the three McGrady's (Ewan, Jason & Ricky) in their time at Canterbury. He and his brothers were very respectful, quiet and shy.

"He was easy to coach, a willing learner, an excellent team player and a real quiet achiever in our sides success in 1991.

"Even though he didn't play in the Grand Final due to injury he was a big part of our side and his efforts helped us get to the decider."

Robinson's 1991 Presidents Cup side won the Grand Final 22-14 against minor premiers Parramatta and included future first graders such as Craig Polla-Mounter, Robert Relf, Barry Ward, Glen Hughes, Darren Senter and was captained by Jason Smith.

McGrady's older brother Ewan played four seasons at the Bulldogs where he appeared in 60 first grade games and was captain in four of those. Ewan won the Rothmans Medal in 1991 for the Best & Fairest player in the premiership and formed a great combination with Lamb that season where he left a lasting memory for Bulldogs supporters with his flair and brilliance.

McGrady's younger brother Ricky played one season at the Bulldogs in 1992, but left the club after failing to agree to a new contract for the 1993 season.

McGrady's son, Jason Jnr, is currently playing Toyota Cup for the Cronulla Sharks.

Rleague.com passes on its condolences to all the McGrady family and for this author one of my finest football memories was turning up to Belmore Sports Ground as a 13-year-old just before 12pm to be there for kick-off when McGrady and all of Robinson's side played some very entertaining and determined football. It was a side that built the foundation for future Bulldogs success in the mid-1990s, which McGrady in 1991 was a big part of.

It's a sad day for the game as the McGrady's played to entertain and very sad for those that enjoyed the 1991 season when the McGrady's thrilled the crowds in first grade and under 21's.

Jason McGrady joined Canterbury in 1990 as a winger and was the brother of Ewan McGrady. He played 51 games for the Bulldogs over his 3 years at the club.
