- Senator David Norris is the Seanad Éireann representative for the University of Dublin. He is on the Oireachtas Foreign Affairs Committee. He is well-known and is generally liked.
Norris has been a Senator since 1987. He remains a campaigner for the rights of homosexuals and took a number of cases in the Irish Courts and the Court of Human Rights in the 1980s to demonstrate that the laws criminalising homosexual acts between constenting individuals were in breach of the convention on human rights.

Lobby Letter to TD/Senator
Dear Deputy/Senator (insert name)
I am writing to you on a matter of urgency. In 2011 the Election for the position of President of Ireland will be held. By this stage various Political Parties will be pondering as to who they will run as their candidate. I am appealing to you and your party to work together with Labour/Greens/Independents to seek the nomination of Independent Trinity Senator David Norris as a United Centre-Left Candidate.
As I am sure you are aware Presidential Candidates must seek the signatures of 30 Members of the Oireachtas. Currently that means only three Political Groupings can propose a Presidential Candidate. Those Groupings are: Fianna Fail and the PDs with 110 Oireachtas Members. The Next Grouping is that of Fine Gael with 65 Oireachtas Members. Finally there is the Centre-Left Grouping consisting of Labour, the Greens and the Independents. This Group holds exactly 44 Oireachtas Members, 14 over the 30 Signatures required.
It is clear that these figures add up to a contest of 3 Candidates. It is my firm belief that Senator David Norris should be a candidate in the 2011 Presidential Election.
I am therefore asking you to urge your Parliamentary Party to vote for David Norris to become the Presidential Candidate that will be the symbol of the the New Ireland, Brave, Tolerant and Diverse.
