Ja, o mnie i jeszcze raz ja
Developing a mental illness was not part of my game plan - I had other ideas for my future - but this was not to happen. I developed a depressive mood disorder with psychosis in my first year at university. It saw me comatose with depression, self-harm and make myself vomit to punish myself. After many hospitalisations, I have at last achieved a recovery thanks to good treatment, support and self -management and my condition is stable. Michel Syrett and I married in 2009. Following the publication of my autobiography about my journey to overcome my mental health challenge, I then published The Snow Globe Journals. The Cairn has also published the carer's account with To Walk on Eggshells. The Cairn gives talks and presentations mental illness and its recovery- for just as we all have physical health so we all have mental health - and for one in four of us that health will require medical support. I am a BP person, so naturally reach for pretty much anything that is of the subject area. Suzy provides an excellent description of what it is like to suffer from mind and life crippling depression, without wallowing in OTT lurid 'woe is me' details. There is more than enough to paint the picture, to other sufferers and their folks. Nor does she describe florid periods of wonderful mania (It is awful and destroys jobs lives relationshps, and your bank balance!), where she got 5 degrees, a leading research job, a huge salary, speaking engagements, and when she fell back to earth, someone rescued her. Ring any bells? Instead, she gently decribes how the illness can mess up even the simple things, and showed great bravery and a good example of perseverance with help academically.

She seems to have accepted her illness, and treats it like a friend who must not be abused. She has learned to recognise it will always be there, but looks after it, in order that it doesn't become offended and let itself be known in a vociferous and unavoidable way.

The value of a caring family and friends is well documented, and there's a smiley anecdote on a regular basis to avoid becoming bogged down in wretchedness. She notably doesn't name any of her drugs, perhaps in order that anyone else will not be influenced by her experience, but be given the chance to be helped by the right people with the right meds.

She comes across as the kind of lady you'd love to have a coffee with, and count as a friend. Well done Suzy and good luck with your future

  • Online Bullying

The Cairn Team were concerned and saddened to hear reports that people who utilise our social networking pages were being found to be bullying or harrassing other users.

The Cairn team can not condone this sort of behaviour on any level.

If there is someone on your friends list that is upsetting you by leaving tasteless and cruel remarks, please delete them from your friends list and block them. You can also report them for abuse. But never retaliate or gang up on other users.

Be strong and walk away. It may hurt, but it is better in the long term.

  • No excuse

Having a mental illness shouldn't be used as an excuse for bad or unreasonable behaviour or bullying.

A bully is a bully is a bully is a bully.

I'm a big boy now, and therefore find it easier to cope with, than say... a school kid who becomes suicidal, but it can appear in many different guises. Let's get it straight:

Making anyone's life an utter misery via the medium of the internet using anonymity as a weapon is among the most despicable, spineless and cowardly acts of our time, and I hope that those who are that way inclined will now think twice before unloading their spiteful turds into the great toilet pan of this virtual existence.

ie - treat others as you would like to be treated yourself!

facebook The Cairn Posted a status update: thanks for the requests and the gifts of all sorts of things - but I have to ignore them as I can't cope with how to do them at all. Thanks though..

    Hello The Cairn
Thursday 10th Of September is World Suicide Awareness Day.
To mark this event, community groups from across Belfast are participating in an “Walk of Life” to raise awareness of the issue. Groups from across the city are leaving their perspective headquarters to march to City Hall for 6am, to mark this as a Belfast wide event. The event is scheduled at this early time to symbolise travelling through darkness and into light as an expression of hope for those bereaved through suicide.
We would like to march from our building Memorial House waring Street at 5.00am
Should you wish to become involved in this event, please contact myself on the numbers or email address below.
