story of a "downed" cow
The truck carrying this cow was unloaded at Walton Stockyards in Kentucky one September morning. After the other animals were removed from the truck, she was left behind, unable to move. Stockyard workers used customary electric prods in her ear to try to get her out of the truck, then they beat her and kicked her in the face, ribs, and back, but she still didn’t move. They tied a rope around her neck, tied the other end to a post in the ground, and drove the truck away. The cow was dragged along the floor of the truck and fell to the ground, breaking both her hind legs and her pelvis in the process. She remained this way until 7:30 that evening.
For the first three hours, she lay in the hot sun crying out. Periodically, when she urinated or defecated, she used her front legs to drag herself along the gravel roadway to a clean spot. She also tried to crawl to a shaded area, but she was unable to move far enough. Altogether, she only managed to crawl between 13 and 14 yards. The stockyard employees wouldn’t allow her any drinking water; the only water she received was given to her by Jessie Pierce, a local animal rights activist. After she was contacted by a woman who witnessed the incident, Jessie arrived at noon. Stockyard workers did not cooperate to help her, so she called the Kenton County police. A police officer arrived but was instructed by his superiors to do nothing; he left at 1 p.m. The stockyard operator informed Jessie that he had permission from the insurance company to kill the cow but wouldn’t do it until Jessie left. Although doubtful that he would keep his word, Jessie left at 3. She returned at 4:30 and found the stockyard deserted. Three dogs were attacking the cow, who was still alive. She had suffered a number of bite wounds, and her drinking water had been removed. Jessie contacted the state police. Four officers arrived at 5:30. State trooper Jan Wuchner wanted to shoot the cow but was told that a veterinarian should kill her. The facility’s two veterinarians would not euthanize her; they claimed that in order to preserve the value of the meat, the cow could not be destroyed. A butcher eventually arrived at 7:30 and shot the cow. Her body was purchased for $307.50.
When the stockyard operator was questioned by a reporter from The Kentucky Post, he stated, “We didn't do a damned thing to it,” and referred to the attention given to the cow by humane workers and police as “bullcrap.” He laughed throughout the interview, saying that there was nothing wrong with the way that the cow was treated.
Sadly, this is not an isolated case. Although this incident occured in the US, it is not unusual in the UK. Each year thousands of cows, pigs and chickens arrive at the slaughter house to sick or injured to walk as a result of a lifetime of abuse. The animal does not recieve medical attention as it is costly and treatments such a anasthetic can "damage the meat". Sad as it is, as long as the animal makes it to slaughter it is still profitable.
The meat industry is a cruel and greedy one where the hunger for money truly exceeds the welfare of the animals.
By buying meat you are supporting this cruelty and you too have blood on your hands. help end the cruelty.

reasons to go vegan. it's long but informative, something everyone should read!
Saving Animals
Disease, dirt and crowding, antibiotics and chemical growth enhancers - that's the five month life of most pigs.
24 per cent of dairy cows are pregnant when slaughtered - many nearing full term.
Calves are taken from their mothers a day or two after birth. Males are usually killed.
75 per cent of all piglets have their teeth crushed and tails cut off without anesthetics.
Up to one fifth of chickens may be fully conscious when they enter the scalding tank to loosen their feathers.
Broiler sheds may contain up to 50,000 birds - each one allowed a space the size of a telephone directory.
Nearly all 850 million UK chickens are fed antibiotics daily. 72 million die from disease
Four-fifths of broiler chickens (killed for meat) have broken bones and deformed feet, legs and other bone deformities.
80 per cent of all eggs come from battery hens - kept five to a cage no bigger
than a microwave oven.
25 per cent of turkeys are in chronic pain because of swollen joints - 70 per cent of big birds.
Most ducks are factory farmed in crowded sheds. they never see daylight or swim in water.
Millions of calves, lambs and pigs are conscious when their throats are cut.
20 per cent of lambs die from cold, disease and starvation.
Saving yourself
Vegetarians are less likely to suffer strokes caused by coronary artery disease.
Vegetarian diets offer disease protection because of lower saturated fat, cholesterol and animal protein and higher folates, antioxidant vitamins and plant nutrients.
Vegetarians have lower rates of obesity, coronary heart disease, high blood pressure, large bowel disorders, cancers and gallstones.
Vegetarians often live longer and suffer less from several chronic diseases
New research suggest that dementia may be linked to a BSE-like 'prion' found in some meat.
Vegetarians have half to three-quarters the risk of dying of heart disease compared to non-vegetarians.
Vegetarians have a much lower incidence of caesarean section.
95 per cent of all food poisoning comes from meat and animal products.
Cancer rates among vegetarians are 25-50 per cent less than non-vegetarians.
Diabetes is much less likely to be a cause of death in vegetarians
Hypertension (high blood pressure) in vegetarians is one third to one half that of meat eaters
Vegetarian diets have been successful in arresting and reversing severe coronary artery disease
Saving people
35 per cent of the world's people can be fed on a meat-based diet. A plant diet could feed everyone - then plus some.
It takes about 10kg of good quality plant protein - such as wheat and soya - to produce 1kg of meat protein.
The amount of veg protein fed to the US beef herd would feed almost the entire populations of India and China -
two billion people!
90 per cent of the UK's animal feed protein concentrates come from poor countries - often those where children die from starvation.
Amount of grain needed to end extreme hunger - 40 million tonnes. Amount of grain fed to animals in the West - 540 million tonnes.
Saving the planet
More than 70 per cent of all agricultural land in Britain is used to feed animals.
Animal faeces is a major cause of acid rain - in Holland and Belgium, the main cause.
Deserts spread every year - by an area the size of England and Scotland. Livestock grazing is the main cause.
Rain forests are still being felled to graze hamburger cattle. Going vegan saves one acre of forest every year.
On irrigated land, 1lb of vegetables uses 25 gallons. 1lb of beef uses 5,214 gallons.
Farmed animals rank second in causing global warming. Reason - methane from prolific farting and belching
very year in Britain, one billion gallons of pesticides are used - 200 chemicals, 50 suspected of causing cancer.
If Britain went vegetarian, less than half the farm land would be needed - vegan, less than a quarter.
all these statements are fact.
just proof a vegan would benefit everyone.3 Commentaren 700 dagen

CALLING ALL NZ VEGANS!!! Market Research Questionnaire
door
An Addiction Adored
Hello everyone!2 Reacties 65 weken
I am doing some market research, hope you don't mind me posting here (Delete this if you don't want it here, MODs!).
I'm a vegetarian myself, and the thing i miss most is LOLLIES!!!
But, since all soft lollies contain Gelatin (Animal product), i haven't had any since becoming a Veg!
So... I'm here to see how many others agree and miss these sugary goods and what the market is like for these items!
So, if you could please answer the following questions (pick and choose whatever you want to answer, whatever you feel comfortable answering) it'd be much appreciated!
1) What kind of lollies do you miss the most, but that you cannot eat anymore since becoming a vegetarian/vegan? (Marshmallows, Jubes, Jelly babies, Fudge, etc etc etc)
2) Do you already have a supplier? (Do you have anywhere you know of that you can easily and cheaply buy vegan lollies)
3) If you answered yes to the question above, Where do you source them from and how much do they cost?
4) Would you be interested in being able to buy vegan friendly lollies online, cheaply and easily?
5) Would you be willing to pay more for Vegan friendly lollies? (High price due to extra import cost and extra costs alike)
Feel free to post any other questions and comments and you can message me on my account on here any time!
I'd love to hear some feed back to this!
Thanks for your time and i hope you have a great day!
Take care! -

I also take constructive criticism well so please don't be shy; looking forward to meeting some of you! take care!2 Reacties 66 weken

I think animal testing is sick and very wrong. Its a cruel from of torture and needs to stop.2 Reacties 84 weken
It should be banned, if we want things to test, on test on humans!
My mum says shes gonna give up her body when she dies to medicine research just to help animals! Most of her family are veggies like me (including her).
If you wear makeup , I suggest checking it hasnt been made from or tested on animals! The Body shop sells products made from animal free materials. So shop there girls for ur lippie!

I'm Against Animal Cruelty, But I'm Just Gonna Make A Point.
The Natural World Is All About The Food Chain. So It's Neither Right Nor Wrong To Be A Person Who Eats Meat, Or A Vegan. It's A Personal Choice.
I Mean, You Don't Go Around Saying "Meat Is Murder" To Animals, Do You? But You Don't Bitch At A Herbivore For Eating Grass At The Same Time.
We're Animals When It Comes Down To It.
But Like I Said. Neither For Nor Against. Sorta Indifferent.
Animal Cruelty ie. Animal Testing/Killing For Fur Is A Complete Abomination. That's What I Am Against.
Vegan
hey!!!
please take a look at our group and help stop the deaths of 1.5 MILLION babies each year!!!
thank you xxx
in fact tom s, it wont be wasted as it wont be produced in the first place, the combined number of vegetarians and vegans across the world takes down meat demand enough to stop hundreds of thousands of potential lives being tortured and killed.
you thought they just made loads and loads of meat regardless of sales figures that they simply throw away? thats illogical from a business point of view.
so thanks for your suggestion, but no thanks.
if u dont eat the meat it will be wasted so for f*k sake keep hunting and eating meat
made a pledge today to try vegan for a month, i already dont eat dairy or meat...so just fish to cut. check out the vegan society web site for the pledge info. you will get a mentor to help. I am looking forward to cooking some great new food.

fuck vegans
Hi, Joe, how is everyone? Just writing to let you know, make you aware, that the sickos of bebo have crossed the line just a little too far! they have trawled the internet all over to look for information about me, my pictures, and details about my personal life, which they pasted all over a "hate" group on bebo. The group has now been deleted, but they stil have the pics and the info, which they will almost definitely use to "fake" me, imminantly. They have superimposed the pictures to make me look like a meat-eater, which I certtainly am not! the pictures they have are old, and they have used photo-shop to enhance them. Just be aware of comments from such a fake, as these trolls have targetted this page before. Much love, Jennie. xx
