      Britain and Australia are saying sorry to thousands of British children who were promised a better life overseas, only to suffer abuse and neglect thousands of miles from home.

      The British government said Sunday that Prime Minister Gordon Brown will apologize for 20th-century child migrant programs that saw thousands of poor British children sent to Australia, Canada and other former colonies until the 1960s. Many ended up in institutions or were sent to work as farm laborers.

      Brown's office said officials would consult with representatives of the surviving children before making a formal apology next year.

      The Australian government says Prime Minister Kevin Rudd will offer his own apology Monday to the child migrants, as well as to the "forgotten Australians," children who suffered in state care during the last century.

      Sandra Anker, who was sent to Australia from Britain when she was six, said the British government "have a lot to answer for."

      "We've suffered all our lives," she told the BBC. "For the government of England to say sorry to us, it makes it right -- even if it's late, it's better than not at all."

      The British government has estimated that a total of 150,000 British children may have been shipped abroad under a variety of programs that operated between the early 19th century and 1967.

      A 2001 Australian report said that between 6,000 and 30,000 children from Britain and Malta, often taken from unmarried mothers or impoverished families, were sent alone to Australia as migrants during the 20th century. Some of the children were told, wrongly, that they were orphans.

      The migration was intended to stop the children being a burden on the British state while supplying the receiving countries with potential workers. A 1998 British parliamentary inquiry noted that "a further motive was racist: the importation of 'good white stock' was seen as a desirable policy objective in the developing British Colonies."

      British Children's Secretary Ed Balls said the child migrant policy was "a stain on our society."

      "The apology is symbolically very important," he told Sky News television.

      "I think it is important that we say to the children who are now adults and older people and to their offspring that this is something that we look back on in shame," he said.

      "It would never happen today. But I think it is right that as a society when we look back and see things which we now know were morally wrong, that we are willing to say we're sorry."

      Former Australian Prime Minister John Howard resisted calls to apologize to institutionalized children and Australian Aborigines, arguing that contemporary Australians should not take responsibility for mistakes made by past generations.

      Rudd reversed the policy after he was elected in 2007, apologizing to Aborigines for 200 years of injustice since European settlement.

      At a ceremony Monday in Canberra attended by hundreds of former child migrants, Rudd will apologize for his country's role in the child migrants program and say sorry to the 7,000 survivors of the program who still live in Australia.

      He also will apologize to the Australian children -- more than 500,000, according to a 2004 Australian Senate report -- who were placed in foster homes, orphanages and other institutions during the 20th century. Many were emotionally, physically and sexually abused in state care

      PRESIDENT OBAMA DECLARES FLUE A NATIONAL EMERGENCY.

      WASHINGTON, Oct 24 - US President Barack Obama has signed a proclamation declaring 2009 H1N1 swine flu a national emergency, the White House said on Saturday.

      The proclamation, which Mr Obama signed on Friday night, will make it easier for U.S. medical facilities to handle a surge in flu patients by allowing the waiver of some requirements of Medicare, Medicaid and other federal health insurance programs as needed, the White House said in a statement.

      The US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention said on Friday that H1N1 swine flu has become widespread in 46 of the 50 US states, a level comparable to the peak of ordinary flu seasons but far earlier and with more waves of infection expected.

      The White House statement said the declaration was intended to prepare the country in case of “a rapid increase in illness that may overburden health care resources” and was similar to disaster declarations issued before hurricanes hit coastal areas.

      Seasonal flu normally peaks sometime between late November and early March.

      Swine flu has hit young adults and children the hardest, while seasonal flu normally is more dangerous for people over age 65. H1N1 has killed more than 1,000 Americans and put more than 20,000 in the hospital in the United States since it emerged earlier this year, the CDC said. But health officials are quick to note that the actual number of cases cannot be measured.

      ...This is a vision of the coming apocalypse thrillingly captured in the latest Hollywood blockbuster.

      But fears that the world is due to end in December, 2012 is just a myth fuelled by internet rumour, according to a leading Nasa scientist.

      2012-Doomsday? The film 2012 will inflame existing fears about the possible end of the world.

      Dr David Morrison, who runs the space agency's 'Ask an Astrobiologist' service, says he has received more than a thousand emails from those worried that the world is due to end in 2012.

      In an article published by the Astronomical Society of the Pacific, Dr Morrison has answered the top 20 questions in an attempt to assuage these fears.

      According to the theories on the internet, the calendar used by the ancient civilisation of the Mayans is due to come to an end in December 2012.

      Luckily for conspiracy theorists, this coincides neatly with predictions by an obscure sci-fi author, who wrote about the ancient Mesopotamian civilization of Sumer, that a planet named Nibiru will collide with the Earth on that date.

      Fears have been further inflamed by an apocalyptic film called '2012' starring John Cusack, which is out this November. A quick search on Amazon reveals there are 175 books listed that deal with 2012 doomsday.

      First off Dr Morrison dismisses the possibility that the planet Nibiru even exists.

      He writes: 'The bottom line is that Nibiru is a myth, with no basis in fact.

      'To an astronomer, persistent claims about a planet that is "nearby" but “invisible” are just plain silly.'

      And Dr Morrison laughs off suggestions that the government has been complicit in hiding its existence from the public.

      'Even if they wanted to, the government could not keep Nibiru a secret,' he says.

      'If it were real, it would be tracked by thousands of astronomers, amateurs as well a professional. These astronomers are spread all over the world.

      'I know the astronomy community, and these scientists would not keep a secret even if ordered to. You just can’t hide a planet on its way to the inner solar system!'

      He also addresses the concerns of those who worry that the Mayan calendar is due to end in 2012.

      'Ancient calendars are interesting to historians, but they cannot match the ability we have today to keep track of time, or the precision of the calendars currently in use.

      'The main point, however, is that calendars, whether contemporary or ancient, cannot predict the future of our planet or warn of things to happen on a specific date such as 2012.

      'I note that my desk calendar ends much sooner, on December 31 2009, but I do not interpret this as a prediction of Armageddon. It is just the beginning of a new year.'

      He added although many believe prophecies by the sixteenth century seer Nostradamus predict the end of the world in 2012, there is no evidence he has correctly predicted anything.

      He also tackles the belief circulating on some internet forums that an alignment of planets in our galaxy the Milky Way could in some way disrupt the Earth's gravitational field or reverse the Earth's rotation.

      'A reversal in the rotation of Earth is impossible. It has never happened and never will,' he said.

      He added that although the magnetic polarity of Earth does take place around every 400,000 years scientists don't believe it will take place for another few millennia and there is no evidence it would do any harm
