bird feeders - an example of a forum post from www.parenthood.me.com (play ideas forum)
kids enjoy helping to make these!!!!
this is really cheap, fun and easy to do!!!!
go out and buy the following things (shouldnt cost more than a few pounds)
paper cups (poundland)
lard (31p each in asda - smartprice)
bird seed (poundland)
wool or string (poundland)
knitting needle (poundland)
melt down lard, pour into paper cups, add bird seed to the cups and leave in fridge to cool and harden (takes a few hours)
once lard has hardened put the knitting needle right through the cup to make a hole, put the wool through the hole to the other side of the cup (this might take some time and patience!!) knot each end of the wool (we also used some old plastic small tupperware lids to rest the feeder on) cut the cup off the feeder. put some more bird seed in a bowl and roll the feeder around in it to cover with bird seed (the lard is very sticky so the seed will stick to it) take outside to hang in the garden and wait for the birds to come!!!!
*lard not only gels the feeder together but it is also helps prevent birds choking on the seed*
you can also cut a coconut in half, scoop out all the coconut and drill a hole through for hanging, fill the coconut half with the lard and bird seed mixture and hang out side once set
it is important to help feed birds during the cold months when their usual source of food may be low in supply!0 Comments 745 days
